2013 review updated after 2017 re-play of Steam version: Options include separate sliders for Music, Ambient sounds, Effects, and Voice, plus full-screen, aspect correction, and custom cursor. If you're new to hidden object games, click on the ? at the top right of the options menu, which will give you the basics. There are four modes to choose from: Casual Reader, Bookworm, Scholar, and Choose Your Own (NICE!) and you can change the difficulty at any time. Using a HINT during the adventure portion of the game will give you a directional arrow without discharging your hint. The task bar is retractable, and can be locked in a open position, if you wish. Items in the task bar with circle underneath them need some kind of interaction. Click on the items to zoom in and see what needs to be done. You may have to open a box to see what's inside, or combine with something else in your inventory. The journal is a cell phone. It's located on the bottom right side of the screen, and there are multiple tabs to click on: Notes, which has no spoilers, and records the all-important things you MUST know to solve puzzles, and it also shows you how long you've been playing; Map, which is interactive if you've chosen it to be (in the custom settings) and DOES have a jump-to option (you can also access the map without going through the cell phone -- just look slightly to the left of the cell phone button); To-do List, which I never used; and Achievements, which has 3 tiers and a total of 24 possible. The characters are colorful, and nicely-voiced. I was surprised to see two cutscenes with singing (à la Disney,) but I can forgive those short lapses since the game is so good otherwise. ;D Our helper Gears the Owl come in very handy when there are things that we wouldn't otherwise be able to reach... Nice not to have to find a ladder every time! There are a multitude of ways that we interact with the game. With books there are two ways: The first is where we have the narrator read a line of two, then we find a couple of items hidden on the page to progress the story. In the end we get a new item. An excellent way to keep the players interested in the story! The second kind is where we open a book, and there's a hollow space inside. We then need to find fragmented objects across the scene (don't close the book!) and when you find the final piece, you have an item to help you on your way. There are a couple of different kinds of actual hidden object scenes. There are your "typical" interactive HOS -- Items listed in white can be found right away, yellow items are under/behind something, green items need interaction. There's a HOS type where every time you find something, you see sparkles, which indicate that there's something hidden behind the piece. The last kind of HOS has four locked tabs at the bottom. We have to unlock each box with whatever shape you see (ie. keys, spades, etc.) to see the lists. Once you find all four items on a box, you'll find an item hidden behind it, which you will have to place in the scene. Place all four items to finish the scene. Mini-game instructions can be found in the bottom right corner of the screen. Collector's Edition content: - Bonus Chapter - Integrated Strategy Guide - 45 roses - 28 Morphing items, found in the hidden object puzzles - 24 Achievements - 8 Downloadable Music Tracks - 6 Concept Art, showing before and after (for a total of 12 pics) - 10 Wallpapers (NOT just glorified screens from the game!) - 28 replayable HO Puzzles (tracks time and accuracy!) - Sugar Rush Bonus Chapter The bonus is told from another character's point of view, and takes place after the main game ends. Be sure to keep an eye out for roses, there are still 11 to find! You get to the chapter by hitting the 'Play' button once you've finished the main game. Instead of having a helper, you will see that there's something else in that space. Keep an eye on it, you'll need to click it, then click the screen to accomplish some actions! This is one of the best bonus chapters I've ever played, with the content just as interesting and fun to play as the main game. There is a point where we have a choice to make, and it WILL affect the ending of the story. Just a note that there is one mini in the bonus chapter that requires dexterity (and/or great patience,) and that the final puzzle was timed, in a manner of speaking. You have to accomplish something whilst being attacked, and these attacks undo a bit of your progress, so faster is better. Hidden Chapters and Roses The hidden chapters are unlocked when you find all 45 roses -- 37 in main game and 11 in the bonus chapter. The game brilliantly tracks your rose findings, and you'll see them in the bottom left corner of the screen (underneath Gears the Owl.) If the rose there is gray, you still need to find the rose on your current location. If you click on the rose at any time during gameplay, it will pop up showing ALL of the roses to be found. Found roses are red, unfound are gray, and empty spots show locations you haven't been to yet. If you hover the cursor over any rose (of whatever color,) it will tell you the location of the rose you've missed so that you can go back and find it - Even after you've finished the game! If you go to the Extras section, there are three things there: Gallery, Achievements, and Rose Hunt. Click on Rose Hunt, then click on any gray rose to travel to that location and find your missing rose(s)! Once you've found ALL of the roses, click on each of them to create a puzzle piece. Once all 45 pieces are placed, the hidden chapters will be unlocked. There are three hidden chapters, each with a different theme. In the first chapter, watch for clovers -- there are four hidden here! You finish the chapter, add the token to the middle book... and now you're stuck! Back to the Extras section, and there's a Collectibles section that I didn't even see! (Top left) You have to complete this section before you can go on to the second and third hidden chapters! In this section are NINE sub-sections. Click on any area to go back into the game and grab the collectibles that, if you're like me, you didn't even know to watch for... Or perhaps they aren't unlocked until you finish the game, I don't know *shrugs* There's one at each location, for a total of 45 collectibles, and the hint button WILL help you find them. The area where our helpful owl was will show you which item you're looking for - very helpful! NOW you can complete the last two chapters, #3, then #2. Finishing the last chapter will unlock: Sugar Rush Sugar Rush unlocks a HOS with 100 items to find! Just one more little bonus to this CE that has SO many extras, already! The main game ended well, but the bonus chapter gives us some great closure. The graphics are very nice, the music never invasive, the gameplay and story also very good! My only gripe is that, even though there are in-game achievements, we didn't get Steam achievements. :\ All told - even though I played this game four years ago - this game took me over 8 hours to complete, and is still one of the best Hidden Object CE's that I've played! Absolutely recommended!
I haven't had a HOGA (The Lost Lands series, The Legacy series) leave me thinking 'wow' ....until now. How did I not know about the Nevertales. Beautiful graphics and soundtrack, excellent voice acting, HO's that are quite unique, puzzles, hidden roses in each scene and a bonus morphing object in HO's which unlock things once the game is complete. It is a very long game but it never loses your attention with a detailed story, a beautiful story. When you play the Collectors Edition, you receive not only a bonus chapter, but you also get a another chapter that will become unlocked after completing certain puzzles and a Strategy Guide in case you need further assistance. I am now a huge fan of Mad Head Games and look forward not only to the rest of the Nevertales series but also, all the other games they have developed. Wow!
This has to be hands down the best HOG I have ever played. There is so much to do and gameplay was 10 hours for me and I never got bored. Genkicoll gives an excellent review, so I won't go into the details. Suffice to say, you're in for a treat if you play this. Graphics were excellent, absolutely stunning in some scenes. Story was interesting and although you guessed the theme, the game took you into areas you never imagine. Remember, it is fantasy!! Music was lovely, full orchestral music in many cases and never intrusive. Mini games ranged from easy to challenging. I skipped a few. One game needed patience and a steady hand. Took me a few goes to do that, so I did learn a little patience. HO scenes were variable with shadow figures, lists and interactive pieces. The full game took me 8 hours. The extras was like unwrapping a Russian Babushka doll and finding something else inside of it which went on for another 2 hours. The bonus chapter brought a nice ending to the game. During the game, you look for a rose in each scene. These roses are actually pieces of a jigsaw puzzle which opens up 3 hidden chapters. As Genkicoll said, once you did the first chapter, the collectibles appeared. Once those are found, it opened up the last 2 chapters. The final section was the sugar rush which was a repeat of a HO scene. Try to do it without making a mistake! I found this game delightful and full of surprises. This is how a good HO should be. Well done to the devs! I don't know if this high standard continues in the series, but I will certainly be buying the next one! Can't fault this at all. Loved the steampunk owl as your little helper!! 10/10.
One of the best HOG I played, you can buy it eyes closed with or without discount. You don't want to close your eyes and place it in your cart just because you trust me ? It's okay, I'll tell you why this one is amazing. - The story is interesting even though you get so fast what will be happening. - The characters animation is nice, which happens so few that you expect the quality to fall at some point. Spoiler alert, it doesn't. - The voice over is pretty well done, I have some problem with accents used to portray specific people ion every single HOG so it bothered me there as well, but that's on me. - The HOG scenes are originals in how they are presented to the player and that's so refreshing ! - Puzzles are originals and require you to pay attention to your surrounding. - Along with the classic bonus story you get with a "Collector Edition", you also get 3 mini scenes to solve. I'm sure I could go on and add some more to the list, but if by now you haven't placed it in your basket or at least wishlisted while liking HOG, it's certainly because you already have the game. I don't see any reason that would prevent you to enjoy that one.. Except maybe if you intend to play Darkata first. Also, thank you again to Hairy Mary who gifted me this marvel "just because I know you like HOG", you're a blessing and I truly enjoyed your present.
This one had refreshing new twists on puzzles in this genre. I liked it very much and I am going to look for more like this one!
I was so excited for the second game in this series and I was completely let down. I couldn't even get halfway through. Literally. NONE of the mini-games made any logical sense and you HAD to get them right the first time because if you screw up, the puzzles won't reset even if you exit that screen and come back to it. (If you've played the game, you know I'm talking about the barrel at Maria's beach cottage and the rose box in the woods nearby). The so-called strategy guide does not help AND THERE IS NO SKIP BUTTON. I honestly got so fed up that I just quit. The graphics and attention to detail are great and the plot started out really interesting, but the puzzles and lack of logical progression just ruined it. Stick to the first game.
This game was one of the better hidden object games. I really enjoyed it. The best part was the bonus game and the bonus bonus game. It was fun to go back to find objects I had missed and redo the hidden object sections I did not do well in. I have now played two madhead games and they were both very good. Please would steam get more of their games for us to play.
This game is much longer than most and has some very interesting ways of doing things. For instance in some of the HOPs to even get the clues you have to find say 4 objects that will then open up the HOP list. Also I liked the story and found it very possitive, as opposed to so many other games in this type of game. No vampires or sick evil nemesis. Refreshing really. It has collectables and morphing objects, which is always nice and a good map and a Strategy Guide if you get stuck. so you don't have to leave the game. Enjoyed this one.
I HOPE MORE OF THIS TYPE OF GAME FINES IT"S WAY TO STREAM. THE HOP"S ARE UNUSUAL WITHOUT BEING MORE DIFFICULT. THERE ARE SURPRISE TWIST WHICH MAKE GAME STORY INTERESTING!!
