Need for Speed when Toyota was chill about it. Absolute peak, it was a glimpse into a car scene I adored and grew into over time. Still my favorite after 11 years.
After ACTUALLY spending a considerable amount of hours playing this game (unlike some reviewers' claims), I can confidently say that Need for Speed (2015) was an absolute gem for its time. Call me biased, but I genuinely believe this game received far more hate than it deserved. While I agree that making it an always-online title wasn't the smartest decision, and that the cringey live-action cutscenes, questionable handling model, and absurdly difficult Prestige event gold goals can be frustrating, the game's strengths don't quite outweigh its weaknesses, but they were enough for me to enjoy it anyway. For a game released in 2015, the graphics are nothing short of stunning. The lighting, reflections, weather effects, and overall art direction still hold up remarkably well today. The customization system was also fantastic and helped lay the groundwork for newer titles such as NFS Heat. That said, if you're a completionist, prepare to suffer because earning gold on prestige events is brutally difficult, often requiring near perfect runs with little to no room for mistakes. The challenge becomes even more ridiculous when playing on a keyboard, where the lack of precise steering control puts you at a significant disadvantage compared to controller players. Despite its flaws, this game absolutely nails the atmosphere of underground nighttime street racing. The combination of the visuals, soundtrack, customization, and overall vibe creates an experience that few racing games have managed to replicate. It's not perfect, but it's far more enjoyable than many people give it credit for, and even today I'd still recommend giving it a chance... when it's on sale of course there's no way I'd justify spending $39.99 on an 11 year old title.

To quote the pcgamer website review : "It's like a nightmare. You're trapped in LA and the sun never shines and you’re living out of your car and everyone keeps talking to you about driving techniques. When they’re not talking to you in person, they’re calling you all the time. It’s hell." That's what the game is, mostly. I tried to enjoy it, but I just can't. The first thing you'll notice, loadings are veery long and definitely unoptimized. You have one loading at the start of the game with the splash screens, etc., then one bigger loading from the menu to your garage, then another big loading to finally play in the city. When you want to take part in different events, races, drift contests, etc, you will want to set different tunes for your car, and this can only be done in your garage, not on the fly, so that will mean... more loadings. I couldn't find some sort of jack-of-all-trades for efficient handling and drifing so I've never felt satisfied with the global steering... meh. I wanted to try to fine better settings but I started to encounter network connection losses which sent me everytime back to the main menu, with loadings, etc. That's when I finally threw in the towel.
How tf am I even supposed to play if the controls don’t even work in game. It doesn’t matter if I’m playing with keyboard or controller. On controller i can’t go straight and can’t do anything lowkey bc it doesn’t even work and on keyboard i can’t steer and the esc button doesn’t even work if i want to go to settings Genuinely money wasted, I’m getting a refund bc ts doesn’t even work
