About
NAPOLEON: RULE OF IRON is a tactical real-time strategy game where you can command Napoleon Bonaparte's most epic historical battles in 1:1 scale. At the battle of Borodino you will see 200.000 actual soldier models on screen engaging in vicious ranged and melee combat. At the battle of Leipzig even up to 500.000. Of course this depends on how well you do in the campaign.
Charge of the french cavalry.
The Campaign follows the story of Napoleon Bonaparte and his largest battles from Toulon to Waterloo: Fight in Italy, Egypt, Europe, Spain and Russia. This doesn't mean that the outcome is clear: there are three alternate endings, two of which are fictitious. Between battles you can manage your Grand Armée: buy supplies, recruit and disband infantry, cavalry and artillery and organize them into Corps. Units can gain experience over the course of the campaign and become your Old Guard. One of them can even bear an imperial eagle standard that inspires nearby soldiers - but be careful. Once it is lost to the enemy it is lost forever. Before each battle there is an immersive briefing and Napoleon will hold a speech infront of your army. The real-time battles give you full tactical control over historical formations like infantry and cavalry divisions and artillery batteries (up to 5000 rendered soldiers or 50 guns each). The maps were carefully reconstructed using NASA satellite data and historical records (though sometimes adjusted for gameplay reasons). These are the 33 battles you can fight in NAPOLEON: RULE OF IRON:
Siege of Toulon, 1793
Mondovi, 1796
Lodi, 1796

And two secret fictitious battles.
The AI will throughout this present a formidable challenge. Innovative mechanics allow it for example to intelligently evade flanking maneuvers or countercharge when charged. On lower difficulties these behaviours are tuned down or removed. The AI employs a Corps System to utilize or defend against strategies like defeat in detail, distraction attacks, defense in depth etc... The AI has no cheat bonuses or maluses on any difficulty level.
The AI evades a flanking maneuver by the player.
Epic sound effects and visual effects have been implemented to match the soldier numbers. Among these are: super powerful marching drums, huge plumes of smoke, artillery impacts, fires and much more. If your unit has a marching band attachement you can order it to play authentic march music and inspire nearby soldiers. Unlike in other games of this genre fallen soldiers never despawn so the field will soon be strewn with the dead (Blood can be disabled in the settings).
The price of taking a fortified position.
The combat is tactical: Morale, stamina, unit weight, speed and terrain height are just some of the factors that influence combat. Terrain cover like trees or villages play a large role. Ammunition travels at the physically accurate speed. Soldiers will step to the side to make way for friendly units trying to pass through them. In melee brawls realistic clusters form. During rain muskets don’t function. Blizzards make your soldiers tire out faster.
Soldiers step to the side to let a friendly elite unit through to the front.
The fate of France hangs in the balance. Take command of the legendary Grande Armée, shape the destiny of Europe and experience the ultimate Napoleonic simulation.

The game really impressed me, especially the sounds. But I would like the terrain to be more detailed—for example, bridges, cities, villages, roads, forests, and terrain effects. I’d also like forests to be used for ambushes. Cavalry should in fact be able to sweep away entire battalions, not lose in battle to a single infantry regiment. I’d also like to see forts. Overall, I want a lot of historical accuracy in such a game, because it is unique in its own way. The special sounds, the regiment sizes—I really like all of that. Unfortunately, the Napoleonic theme is not the most popular. I’d also like to have more freedom, like choosing where to advance, and to limit corps only by the number of soldiers, not by the number of brigades. I’d like to see proper brigade formations in two lines, and formations like the square as well. Believe me, the game is very interesting, and I really wish this project won’t be abandoned and will develop further according to the criteria I described above, because right now the game is still a bit raw and does not fully match its price. I really hope the game will develop further and quickly. The best way to understand what I’ve described above is to watch the YouTube channel Epic History with episodes about the Napoleonic Wars—everything is very well drawn and explained there. I truly hope you’ll notice my review and take into account what I’ve written above. And please, don’t change the sounds—they are your signature feature.
Excellent Napoloenic War Battle Simulator. A grounding for a future series perhaps? :) Luke from LT Gaming YouTube!
from the bit i played the game seems to very fun, cant wait to rack up hours on this, defo would recommend Edit: the reviews saying that their troops wont shoot most likely haven't read that in the first mission, muskets are useless and you must charge troops, and from then on you need to simply purchase ammo in the deployment tab.,
Pretty fun should try, mix of total war and ultimate general
It is very similar to UG Civil War. The graphics are sprites and it reminds me of a old mod for american conquest, Hawks Napoleonic, or something along the line. The 1 to 1 scale also helps to represent the number of people that lost their lives during the warfare of the period. Not really sure if the game will have mod support.
Amazing game, I would give it an 8.5/10 with room for improvement for 9/10 or possibly beyond. Gameplay is similar to total war/UGCW (Ultimate General: Civil War). Only thing I would immediately recommend is a more detailed UI describing how to reach certain unit type upgrades and being able to click enemy units when they're in melee combat. (A more precise way to 'type' unit numbers rather than using a slider for 100% accuracy would also be nice.) If units were able to be customized more in camp with better weapons, cannons, and cavalry sabres that would be awesome. I already like the unit progression from recruits to veterans. Customizable units in my opinion really build variety and increase playtime. AI is amazing, only played on medium difficulty and they are already a decent challenge. Sound effects are definitely upper tier as it builds immersion quite well. Only 7-8 hours in and about 1/4 done with the campaign. Definitely looking for another campaign after current one for sure. 3+ hours went by due to how immersed I was in the game haha.
Super great game, scratches my itch to see the true size of the battles. The AI is pretty smart and it is an actual challenge. I also love seeing all of the historical names. The background music is AWESOME Although, the graphics and detail for the maps aren't very good. I am sure the game could handle a bit more detail. I had a good time before refunding it. I would definitely buy this if it were cheaper. 30USD is way too much. In the end, it has lots of potential if some more detail was added, better movement controls and bells and whistles, etc. Overall, I would recommend waiting for a sale (as I will, haha)
Loving this game so far. Reminds me of the classic Amiga/PC 'Waterloo', but in Real Time. Love the sound effects which really bring the game to life. AI is decent even at lower skill levels. Would be nice to see more Napoleonic formations, such as the attack column and square, but game still works well without these. Nice touch that Eagles can get stolen! :) Hoping that you get to play as the opposition against the French in the future. Keep up the great work!
Its alright. I like the massed formations but cant break them down to smaller formations. Its a different game, not perfect but it can be improved up sort of like a Lines of Battle kinda of game
If you are interest in the time period, this is a decent strategy game. Its a total war battles lite is the best way to put it, but it feels big in scale battle wise. Ai dose a decent job as well.
