I’ve been burned before about VNs that weebs praise as being mind-blowing or really interesting only for them to turn out to be complete garbage, and for the first few hours I thought this was gonna be the same story. But MYTH pulled off the rare feat of actually turning its weird mind-bending and pseudo-philosophical aspects into an actually decent story. It’s hard to meaningfully describe any of it without significant spoilers, but take my word that MYTH is worth experiencing. ----- MYTH starts with a strange premise. You see the world through the eyes of Meito Tanabe, a high schooler from a world where humans cast off their shadows in order to create a world based on rationality and justice. Everything works like clockwork, seeing the same people, doing the same tasks, and living the same life day after day. Until he notices one person walking down the street that he had never seen before and, even more importantly, she has a shadow. Upon following her, she takes him into the ‘world of shadows’ where nature and community dominate instead of the rational order of the shadowless world. From there, you learn more about the world and its residents until things start to get really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥-y and you learn some…. Interesting facts about what’s actually going on. I have to admit that it's a slow start. While the initial premise was weird enough to grasp my attention, it soon lost me as things dragged on with little of real interest happening. The moment-to-moment reading is a pretty poor experience before things started to get revealed and even afterwards this is far from the most engaging VN I’ve read on a purely literary level. The prose is sometimes messy and sometimes dull, but never outright good. The visuals and music are both mediocre. This is just one of those experiences where it does one thing particularly well and every other aspect is just various degrees of trash. I was convinced not long into the story that I had been burned yet again by the awful taste of weebs recommending stuff to me. But dear god was I wrong. I sincerely wish I could explain the details without spoiling, but I just don’t have the proper words for it. MYTH is easily one of the most interesting things I’ve read. But while it succeeds at much of what it tries to do, it's also a bit of a mess. Some of that is inevitable given what it's trying to accomplish, but even with that consideration it could have done a much better job of explaining itself. I understand the general story, but many of the smaller points are still very muddled in my mind. There are some aspects where I’m not sure whether they’re plot-important or just for thematic reasons, a few points where something seems to be connected but I’m not certain if its real or just me making assumptions, and one or two major plot points where some textual support feels like it’s missing. While this is something I’d normally be able to remedy by listening to other people who have read it or consulting supplementary materials like videos and forums, the English-language discussion about the VN is pretty much non-existent. And that’s not exactly something I can say is a fault of MYTH but it does make me a bit more reserved in praising its qualities since the aspects I enjoyed about it might not be as strong as they initially appear once given more thought. Apart from the writing issues I mentioned already, much of MYTH’s other component parts are quite weak. The characters are fine, but largely exist to drive the story forwards rather than be engaging in their own right. Music and visuals are fine but underwhelming. Everything really hinges on whether the plot revelations near the end of Act 1 are enough to get you hooked because if they aren’t then there’s no chance of the rest of the experience ever paying off. ----- I enjoyed MYTH far more than I was expecting to at first and I’m pretty confident that it will stick around in my mind for a very long time. It has a lot of serious flaws, but the underlying strengths are enough to compensate for them given my own tastes and priorities. I wish I could be more explicit about why its good without revealing anything too early, but I just don’t think it can be done so I have to leave this review far more ambiguous than how I would normally like it. I definitely recommend it overall, but this is one of those cases where I wish it could have been made by a better writer with a bigger budget behind the project because this is something I feel could have been great with some more polish behind it so that the underlying strengths could assert themselves without a bunch of preventable issues tainting the overall experience. But I don’t think that’s ever gonna happen so what’s here is what we get. But just from what we have I still consider it a deeply flawed but still very worthwhile experience.

Really awesome denpa VN to play and then sit with and think about. Its textually dense and confusing like other VNs in the genre but its also not well known or covered by any youtubers or journalists. For me, this meant that after the game ended I couldn't just google and see other peoples interpretations of the game and that was really cool. I was left to sit with the game and think about it and come to my own conclusions on the theming and meaning of everything that happens, which is just something you dont get much these days. Overall a really strong denpage, dripping with strong theming and motifs, and a hidden gem that you can sit on and think about, without having all the themes, and foreshadowing, and meanings explained and critiqued for you.
[Spoiler-free review] This is a very underrated visual novel. I have to say, I've never read a story with such a narrative complexity before and, upon reading this, I'm left craving more. It's extremely hard to talk about MYTH without spoilers, but what I can say to advertise it, using the references that the person reading this review probably knows, it'll be this: Imagine the feeling of intrigue, mystery, and the amount of plot twists, and theories in Higurashi combined with the complex metanarrative of Umineko. No, even... Imagine if Umineko had at least TWICE as much of narrative planes, and all of them were being told at the same time, intertwining and intersecting. This is mind-blowing! Utterly insane! Most of the time you'd not understand what's going on at all, and would need to step away to process the thoughts and feelings. This visual novel is a mind-screw. BUT! To see this complex story unfold, one has to be patient. A big chunk of the beginning is slice of life and "stalling", which some may find boring. I, personally, enjoyed it. Especially I enjoyed that in perspective, after reaching the ending. I'd say, give it 3-4 hours, and if you'd like the twist that is coming after a certain day in a story (you'll know exactly what I mean after you'll reach that part) — you'll 100% enjoy the rest of the experience. This is how I'd describe MYTH. I've read quite a few novels, and this is the first one to get 10/10 for me. The only issue I have with it (still no spoilers, but I'll talk about my experience about the last half): I just want MORE. I liked the ending, but I feel like answer arc should've been bigger. I crave more of this story. So to speak, the ending felt a little bit rushed, and I feel like everything could've go on for a bit more time. Still, this is 10/10 experience for me and definitely worth reading if you love mind-blowing and complicated stories.
Fantastic game. Very complex story. Some nauseating horror, fun hijinks, engaging characters with it all coming together for a satisfying conclusion. Riri best girl. The patch still works btw, you just have to launch via the .exe, not the Steam launcher (which is why my hours are so low. it is much longer if you want the full story)
