My Pet Rock is a top down planet defense with rogue-lite, bullet-hell, and arcade elements. You are tasked with defending a rock against endless waves of miners and other hostile enemies, as well as fighting difficult bosses. Game play becomes increasingly harder and chaotic but more rewarding as you progress.
A Rough Little Gem With A Lot Of Potential
I bought this game because I thought it had a cute concept and I liked the name. It looks sort of like a more involved tower defence game so I thought for $3, why not? The game controls by moving your ship with W and pointing, but you have limited fuel causing you to be careful about how much you move. Your primary weapon can overheat and with some items that can happen really fast. Making up the meat of the game, there are upgrades for the rock and your ship, many of which are standard upgrades that increase speed, health, regeneration. The rock itself can be upgraded into a habitable planet. There are mechanics to provide food and water for the people on the planet, but there doesn't seem to be much of a reason to except for some seemingly random events that are quiestionably useful. The rock can also be upgraded with circling drones that you can specialize in a branching upgrade tree. I think these are some of the most interesting parts of the game, but once you have an army of drones of different specializations they are unstoppable. The ship has a few different upgrades that include abilities that are bought with skill points that are gained while leveling and crafting materials that you will eventually have a huge stockpile of since there are so few abilities. There are a couple of abilities that are extremely overpowered and are another part of the game that eventually makes the game a breeze. There are drops of unique items that seem to be inspired by Risk of Rain. Some of the effects of these items are mysterious still due to there being no encyclopedia of sorts that explain what they do. Most items are pretty obvious in what they do and are usually stat changes. Once again, these stat changes tend to add up to eventually create an unstoppable killing machine. There is an option to pick up the items to through them away, since some do have drawbacks, but eventually you will be getting so many that it won't matter at all. I think the upgrades are pretty neat and definitely are the highlight of the game for sheer variety. Unfortunately the enemy and boss variety while interesting in the early game, becomes a bit dry once you become powerful enough and any new enemies melt like butter. In the early game especially, certain item and upgrade combinations can really change up your playstyle as this is the only time where you are vulnerable. Unfortunately this doesn't last. There are modifiers you can add to the game but even with all of them on, I could tell it would end up the same way. Still, the early game is pretty fun. I would like to see more of a visual indication of what the upgrades for the ship change, and how those change alongside the items. Right now you can only really guess that something is probably different as the upgrades them selves are extremely marginal, with the items (possibly?) changing your stats somewhat drastically. This is a slight recommendation since this game is only a few dollars and for a few dollars you can spend a good couple of hours creating an unstoppable planet. For a first game, this is a solid start! Here's hoping the dev continues to polish it and makes the balance more interesting.

Finally evolved into a boulder
Yeah, :D This game is really time killer and it's kinda challenging game ! :D I would recommend it ^^ God Bless this game
Though the learning curve is unjustifiably steep for a game that just isn't that great, My Pet Rock is enough fun on a fundamental level to serve as an occasional diversion. The shoot-em-up/planet defense hybrid provides for some satisfying action, though its overall enjoyability is plagued by a few glaring problems. First, the controls for moving the ship around are horrendous, and so the strategy becomes positioning yourself in an advantageous enough spot at the beginning of the wave to avoid moving around at all costs. Second, a bunch of the upgrades aren't that useful, and you won't know which are worth purchasing without a lot of experimentation. Finally, success is completely dependent upon being lucky enough to get the right item drops, and avoid the wrong ones, which (again) requires a bunch of experimentation. When you ARE lucky, though, the sheer firepower at your disposal is grin-inducing, and those rare moments are worth all the crappy instances you'll slog through to get there.
https://youtu.be/GH3F6UVqJ4I The large amount of depth in this game is hidden under poor UX and unclear feedback loops. The basic ship controls are weak while the enemy AI is overall too simple.
