before buying you should be reasonably sure that the gameplay loop of mining for upgrades and fighting for survival on a timer is exactly your jam. otherwise you will probably dump this game really quick. luckily it is my jam (most days of the week at least) so i got some good fun out of dome keeper. in addition to the usual upgrades, tools and various dome equipment there are different keepers with different abilities and play styles as well as different game modes with goals and challenges. but at the end of the day you're still doing the same thing over and over again. after 38 hours the game was 100% completed but i certainly didn't rush it. it was fun while it lasted but now i don't want to play it ever again, really. however that was before the co-op mode was added to the game but for that to work you need something called "friends"?! what actually impressed me was the developer's dedication. while i was playing i saw multiple small updates to make changes and fix bugs. once even on a sunday! and multiplayer support was added to the game somewhat recently. on an almost 4 years old game. hats off to you, sir! dlc note: the dlc are not needed to 100% the game.
Roguelike game mixed with tower defense. After losing, you can unlock new domes, gadgets, and other aspects like new worlds.
Pros:
- Each run will be different and multiple difficulties are available. - Nice pixel art and good music for battles/exploration parts.
Cons:
- Player can get unlucky if they are not able to find the correct resources such as iron for more expensive upgrades. There is a gadget to find iron, but you need to pick it or find it during a run. - When finding gadgets, player is offered 2 choices only and option to trade in for a resource. If you are unlucky, you may get a useless or average gadget which can cause you to lose a run. Giving 1 free reroll per run would make this feel less random. - Transporting resources at the start is extremely slow and drags down the momentum of the game. I wish this aspect comes with a higher default upgrade because I don't want to be spending time dragging 4 iron at first back and forth to the dome. - Winning on levels requires knowledge of gadgets and understanding which upgrades to prioritize. After player understands that, you follow a similar upgrade order unless you are doing a challenge run. Conclusion: A roguelike with good ideas, but falls flat because of random aspects and tedium from moving resources back to the dome. Replay value is low for a roguelike because they are only 2 characters without DLC and each run feels fairly similar because player prioritizes the same upgrades for dome, resource gathering. etc. If you enjoy grinding for access to new upgrades, this game will be fun. However, I lost interest after doing several runs.
Thought it was pretty ok when it was single player but I've been really enjoying playing this with friends ever since co-op was added. thanks for that!
The DLC should've been apart of the original game. If anything it should have been released as FreeLC.
Dome Keeper is a worthy entry in the genre and worth checking out on sale! Made by German Indie developers, this game among all the roguelikes stands out as one of the best. The tower defense mechanic combined with mining works surprisingly well. I have played "Wall World (2023)" first and absolutely fell in love with the concept and beautiful pixel art. Dome Keeper came out a year earlier and that's what caught my eye but not enough to hold my interest. The game seemed far slower, grindier and lacked a story. All things which Wall World had. But with the most recent multiplayer update, this game has truly been elevated to the next level! Playing with others requires everyone to own a game copy, but playing split-screen can be done on a single copy. Issue is, one player is forced to play with keyboard while the other player is Forced to play with gamepad?! Why? - Regarding the DLC, the game already has 2 "support-the-devs" packs called Engineer and Assessor, that's good. But the huge Lost Keepers DLC which locks 2 playable characters, Never goes on meaningful sales!! To be honest, I liked Wall World more than Dome Keeper and don't hold that much love for it, so I can live without having experienced the Lost Keepers, but if the price would have been right I might have checked it out. Meh. The game leans in a bit too much into the roguelike and abandons any and all story and lore. Someday they'll make Dome Keeper 2 and I hope they'll improve on all these aspects. This game is ACTUALLY GOOD, but I personally could not bring myself to truly love it like I love Wall World.
Dome Keeper has an interesting idea, but it quickly becomes repetitive and boring. Every run feels the same, with little variety or meaningful progression. The gameplay turns into a tiring grind, and the excitement fades fast. Despite its nice pixel art, I found it dull overall and wouldn't recommend it, even on sale.
Very fun especially in co-op. Very reminicent of having fun with old flash games but polished and expanded to a full game
Schade
This early-access trend has overstayed its welcome.. this game was labeled as early access and what that means is you pay full price now and you'll eventually receive the full game but now they're releasing updates as dlc....
good game, it's quite fun and has TONS of replayability. i had a few issues with it, such as the end artifact in the "Relic hunt" mode, not spawning at all, making the run impossible to win. it was especially an issue for the challenge modes when i managed to get great luck and almost won, but it was impossible. all around: 10 / 10 Art and music design 9 / 10 replay value (can get slightly repetitive) 3 / 10 on bugs (run ending, aggrivating) overall 8 / 10 it's a great game with awful bugs when they do show up, however rare they are
