About

This visual novel is an emotional tale about people brought together by rock 'n roll who are questioning the meaning of their lives, struggling to find a place within society, and agonizing over what music truly means to them.

You play as Kei, a young man from a family line of doctors who is forced him to question his path in life after certain events throw him off the rails laid before him. Through rock 'n roll you'll meet interesting people who offer new takes on life and ideals regarding music. Very few approaches you can take will prove all good or all bad, and nearly all will involve sacrificing something.

Will you abandon music and choose another path? Will you try to value each moment as it comes? Will you do whatever it takes to become a financial success? Dramatic stories will unfold as the consequence of the path you choose.

As a Japanese indie rock artist himself, the producer of this game brings a depth of detail into the lives and culture of indie rock artists that enhances the atmosphere and setting in ways that few others can lay claim to.
In addition to the rockin' background tracks used for ambience during the story, this game contains a full CD's worth of original rock songs created explicitly to represent the tones and styles of the different bands that perform in-game.
The decisions you make throughout the game will lead you down one of five potential paths, each fully fleshed out with many hours of content delving into the consequences of each road taken.
Aside from the protagonist Kei, all of the characters both major and minor are fully voiced throughout the story, bringing another layer of richness and depth.

This game is pretty good, following a rock band since its inception to whatever may await them. However, it's not perfect, and there are some points of contention: The protag Kei Tsushima is a weird guy for certain. It's very hard to move him, but there are instances of this in the game. It's not like he's a full-on psycho either. He's in a weird zone. He also treats people with some degree of kindness (he ignores almost all of the stuff Kaneda does), but that isn't unheard of for a psycho. At any rate, we can safely say that his emotional intelligence isn't that good. The thing that makes him
drop out of high school
, putting him on a road to pursue rock and roll, is pretty cringe. Only in the true route there's something like an aftermath, and it's mostly handwaved. That he chose that route in high school goes to show how weird he is. It's not that bad that he is weird, but he hasn't a lot of presence. Also in addition to being weird, he's sometimes numb to things happening around him. Like the Kaori thing. The bro Aww, Kaneda. The man would be a great bro if only he wasn't so pathetic in most of what he does. It's appalling that Kei includes him in the band despite being the weakest part. Do they really need two guitars? I don't know. It's true that Kaneda goes through some development. But most of the time he's a one-trick pony. Anything outrageous or appalling, you can guess it's gonna come from him. They doubled down too much on making him the comic relief. The heroines Ozaki, the one with the ending which you should play first, is merely okay. She has a bit of backstory with his artist father. But most of it goes in one ear and out the other. At least,
Kei chooses to be a respectable adult in this story. But that's not what we are here for, right?
Kosaka, Dr. Flower's bassist, is a strong contender for the dullest of the three. She doesn't project much of a personality. Both in her own route and in other stories, she contributes little apart from her killer playing. Not much of an interesting character. She even times out most of the time, sleeping on a corner, so that she doesn't have to be written at all. Of course, Mikazuki is special from the get-go, being an albino singer, and Hanai-san's (Kei's mentor and main influence in music) "hikikomori" sister. Apparently people go crazy about her looks so yes, she's something else. She has the most time to shine of the three, and even has double the amount of H scenes, lol. Not that you play this game for that... right? So, the balance between the heroines is thrown off, and they're not very interesting overall, but that may have been a conscious design choice. They're mostly there to carry the story, not to be memorable characters, and with an emphasis on being realistic (or trying). These games from the Overdrive brand are known for drama (like Kira Kira), and the drama in the true route is quite something, but it gets mostly forgotten as characters move on from it. The bad ending, however, is pretty interesting and I suggest you play it. Most of the time the choices don't point very clearly to where the story will go, so I'd suggest using a guide. Overall I'd put it above Deardrops, but Kira Kira was fresher for me. They're all enjoyable and mostly comparable, but this is more serious than Deardrops (Kira Kira has its own heart-wrenching drama). The only gripe is that it lasts more than 40 hours, and it's tempting to use that time to play something else. Ideally you need an interest on rock and roll to play these games.

It's good.
This novel is EXTENSIVE.
Just to get it out of the way, this visual novel is extremely fleshed out and very long, which makes getting just one ending a real commitment (this is not a bad thing whatsoever, in fact, it helped the novel's impact). Also just an fyi, I'm primarily focused on the Mikazuki good/bad endings. That being said, I went into this vn expecting an equal balance of romance and music-themed plot. That was not the case at all.
Surprisingly little romance, but it makes up for that.
Though the end contains a lot more of it, this game overall consists of very little romance, especially when compared to its length. This is coming from someone who really enjoys romance, though, so take that as you will. Despite that, I did enjoy the romance elements that were present toward the end of the game, and other than a personal gripe with how exactly one route ends**, the ending ended up being very impactful after having invested so much time into the vn. The entire rest of the plot (the band's music career, the character development, etc.) is also super detailed and fleshed out really well. Overall I really loved this game and it will definitely stick with me.
8/10
**
It's the way that Mikazuki and Kei don't actually end up getting engaged at the end, but still stay together. They do have a very good reason for that, but I just love a good romantic payoff so that left me a bit unsatisfied.
