First Impressions [Played on the Oculus Rift]: This game wasn't on my radar at all--it was only through a post on r/Oculus that I even heard about it. As a fan of puzzle/mystery/escape room games, I decided to give this one a go... ...and I'm quite glad that I did! I'm surprised at the amount of polish in a game coming from a small dev team. In terms of gameplay, you start off in an office, similar to that in L.A. Noire VR or I Expect You To Die. From there, you pull a lever, which dispenses an orb that takes you to your case. A typical case has you teleporting around the room to solve a crime scene, and by interacting with the environment by talking to fellow robot officers and witnesses, using a magnifying glass to highlight evidence, and little mini-games, you will determine the suspect, weapon, motive, victim, etc. in order to complete each case. Each new detail you find will be accompanied by flavor text through which you will be able to piece together just what had happened in the location you're in. However, I will say that thus far, the game hasn't been particularly difficult (IMO), and I suspect that it won't be a very long experience overall. Nevertheless, the time I've spent so far with Mr. Hack Jack: Robot Detective has been delightful. If you're at all into the types of games I listed, it's worth a try, and maybe you'll even agree it's worth a buy.
You can watch my review here: https://youtu.be/fwqqg0dFD8c
Experienced on the Oculus Rift with Touch Controllers
I did enjoy playing this game. It's a cute puzzle game where you're a robot detective solving robot murder mystery cases. Each scene is nicely detailed and the graphics look very good. You teleport around the nice-looking environments and you can snap turn. You have robot magnet hands that you can use to point and click at objects to pick them up or move them. You have a personal digital assistant (PDA) & magnifying glass as your detective tools. Unfortunately, the game is light on content. There are 4 total missions (and several mini-missions in each) and it took me about 90 minutes to finish the game. You can explore the map & discover some Easter eggs, such as smoking a cigar or putting on different hats. The puzzles are easy & straightforward for the most part. I think kids & puzzle beginners will enjoy this game the most. If you're a puzzle veteran, however, you may want to skip this one. Several of the puzzle mechanics are repeated and while they do get slightly more challenging as you move along, they never evolve. The best thing about the game is the story atmosphere & world building. You really do get a sense that you're this robot detective and that you've been assigned real cases. The cases are interesting to investigate. However, by the end of the 4th missions, I was starting to grow tired of the repeated puzzle mechanics. I also experienced 2 different Unreal Engine crashes during my time in the game. I would have loved if there had been professional voice acting & dialogue to really get immersed in these cases. Rate 6.5/10. I think kids will enjoy this one .... although keep in mind, they will smoke cigars! hehehe
It's a shame that such a well made VR game with somewhat original gameplay and is not another wave shooters or rhythm games that flood the VR market isn't getting more love! See let's play here first mission: https://youtu.be/26zbNmaty6c I've enjoyed what I have played so far and like the premise of the game, price is fair for work involved. Buy you ingrates and support VR devs that just don't jump on the latest its popular bandwagon to make another ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ rhythm VR game!
1st Impressions Video with Commentary! // Oculus Rift // GTX 1060 (6GB): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMJZNYj6aH0 My Initial Thoughts: A unique robot detective style puzzler game with lots and lots of charm. Great graphics, locations and atmosphere. I don't know how long the game is only having 4 missions, but I completed mission 1 in about 20 mins.
Experienced through the oculus rift. If you like detective puzzle games/escape rooms with a great environment (50's noir detective) this game is for you. I was impressed with the details of the game (puddles with reflection and rain drops), especially coming from an indie studio. To give you an idea what you can expect, you start off in an office similar to "I Expect you to Die" and then select the mission from there. Once in a mission, you will be tasked with interviewing the officers on scene and completing various tasks by searching for items, using magnifier (similar to detective mode in batman), looking for codes/secrets to tie the investigation to: a motive, victim, suspect and method. Though, like other's the game is short and where the story left off, implies that expansions can be added down the road. However, if you enjoy crime noir detective puzzles games in VR, give it a try.
Played On: HTC Vive
Mr. Hack Jack: Robot Detective is the virtual reality game that puts you in the role of a detective robot, working on the force with other Police-Bots. Over the course of the game, players are tasked with solving the murders of several robots in each location; all while gathering clues, finding a suspect and a motive, figuring out the murder weapon, and all sorts of other detective stuff. There are even tons of hats to wear, including the one that can be stolen off of the cranky Police Chief-Bot, and that's nothing but a total bonus. There are a total of four levels in this release, and each one must be beat in order to unlock the next. There's a bar, a really aesthetic rainy alleyway at night, a mansion, and a metalworking plant. The levels themselves are fairly small, and it doesn't take very long to complete all of the objectives and move on to the next mission. Most of the puzzles repeat themselves as well, such as the Simon Says mini-games and the mazes that you guide a cube through. Nothing here is very difficult, making it great for kids but still somehow fun for adults as well. In total, this game lasts roughly 1-1.5 hours. At the time of writing there are still some pretty concerning bugs in Mr. Hack Jack: Robot Detective. The most notable problem being that when you get to the third level (this might happen anywhere, but it happened on the third for me and at least one other player) the right hand keeps dropping items every few seconds. At first I was concerned that my controller was biting the dust, so I exited to Steam Home and found that I was able to hold items indefinitely. I checked out a YouTube video and saw another fellow having the same issue in the same level. I went back in and luckily the problem had dissipated. However, it's a completely level-breaking but as it renders players unable to do the mini-games to progress. The second issue becomes more avoidable once gamers get more familiar with the controls, but the problem lies in the locomotion system. With the right controller, you have to press down on the "up" part of the touchpad to teleport, and the left/right portions to turn. Sometimes the game registers pressing the up button as turning, and that can get a bit frustrating. It's also a bit clunky to use the right controller to do all the moving, and all the item holding as well. However, with practice and learning exactly where the sweet spot is, this finicky snag ends up becoming close to non-existent. That said, the left controller is practically unused except for visual purposes; some of the movement controls could've been put there instead. Despite the work that needs to be done, Mr. Hack Jack: Robot Detective is a fun and creative VR game for the whole family. The experience is very reminiscent of both Job and Vacation Simulator, in way of the cartoony graphics and the incompetency of the surrounding bots, not to mention the subtle humor. Even though there's not a lot of content here, this release is worth supporting due to its well optimized nature, consistency of updates from the developer, and just the overall uniqueness that it provides. Hopefully there will be a bonus episode or two released in the future. I got this as part of the curator connect program. A nice puzzle game set in a robot only world. + Robots + Language selection (putting flags on the desk) - No voice acting - You do not actually solve the cases just solve random mini puzzles I would recommend only if on sale.
Short little game, very cute and uses some detective skills reminds me a lot of I expect you to die, except there is a lot more helping in the game (potentially to keep younger audiences from getting lost?). I am not sure it is worth the $15-$20 price range though
