Experienced on the Meta Quest 2
You can view my initial impressions review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/5Hk4NQ3I3Pk I did enjoy the narrative of this game. It is an intriguing murder mystery in a hotel in one of the moons of Jupiter. Per the developer, there are multiple endings. Unfortunately, I found the game overall to be a bit too rough around the edges. I encountered several bugs, none of them game-breaking, but it did make playing the game frustrating. So you're basically trying to solve a murder as a police detective. You can piece together bits & pieces of the story as you explore the Callisto Hotel. There are some puzzles to solve along the way, like how to get around an obstacle. Game uses gaze interaction at times to get narrative pieces of the story and you do have to look pretty precisely at the object. Other times, you will pick up cards and then press trigger to get the narrative bit. I think the voice actors did a good job. However, several interactions were pretty janky, like opening lockers or cabinets. Game is running on the Unity Engine. On my RTX 3080, I was getting mostly 90 fps. The graphical options were very limited. You do have full locomotion or teleportation available, along with smooth or snap turning. You can play comfortably seated, you can crouch down by pressing downwards on the joystick. This game is in Early Access, so I guess bugs are to be expected. The bugs I found were a locker shaking violently, being able to see through a wall, and an object disappearing from my hand, The game was just clunky overall, with lots of clipping through objects, having trouble opening lockers, and a lack of direction. Despite these issues, I could recommend this game to people who want to support development as this game's narrative is very promising. Rate 5/10. Buy only to support developer or if you're okay with dealing with overall jank because you love VR murder mysteries! Otherwise, wait for official release where hopefully these issues are fixed!
Please note: I received a free Steam key through the Steam Curator Connect program. I'm editing my review because of the update on Nov 2023. The developer is a scam artist and paid the main voice actor $60 for all his voice lines, threatened to destroy his voice acting career, lied to attempt to gain sympathy in a game dev discord. I bought this game as the game dev's friend when I was still friendly with him but after watching the meltdown of lies that he pulled with this game I would want nothing to do with him.
Callisto ist jetzt Cold Start: The Callisto. 👑 Powered by HoI 4 Deu Curators group in German / English 👑

Follow Main group
Follow Second group
English: ------------------------------------------> Callisto is now Cold Start: The Callisto. Probably to avoid confusion, well then. The Cold Start by GIB Games is a graphically attractive scifi detective game with a touch of escaperoom. So we find ourselves on Callisto, Jupiter's second largest moon, in an old mining facility that now functions as a luxury hotel. Several murders have recently been committed in this hotel, including a high political figure. As an interstellar police officer, we explore the crime scene, collecting evidence of all kinds, reading and listening through many documents to uncover the dark events. This is how the convoluted story surrounding the Callisto Hotel slowly unfolds. Left pretty much to our own devices, we now explore the hotel with all its many rooms and floors. Fortunately, our colleague Reggie helps us a bit to find our way around. He is in contact with us through the hotel's communication system. He helps us find clues and also provides us with important information. Update: In the meantime, however, there is also a guidance system that makes finding our way a bit easier. According to the developers, the story of Cold Start even offers multiple endings, which of course speaks for replayability. The controls are okay, we can freely walk or teleport. There are not many settings in the menu. We can interact with many things, though there are little bugs or ambiguities here and there. It's a pity that the physics allow us to grasp through objects. The graphics are respectable, at least in the hotel. If you look out of the windows well. Cold Start is not an action game, but a slow exploration game where finding and solving puzzles is the main goal. Therefore, Cold Star can be played comfortably while sitting down. We have to listen really well and read the information that is gathered. The story is tricky and here is the main problem of the game, despite subtitles it is really hard to follow everything. The voice acting is great, the voices are great choices, but also hard to follow. To really enjoy the game, you need to be able to understand English well, both written and spoken. If you fancy a tricky case in an empty hotel on Callisto and know English well, you will definitely have fun here. Since the fun is somewhat marred by the language barrier for a none native speaker, a positive here. 👀By Jupiter!🎊 Come peek, on my curator page. 👑 Powered by HoI 4 Deu Curators group in German / English 👑

Follow Main group
Follow Second group

Follow Main group
Follow Second group
and discover more reviews from me
A crash-course on how to not design a game. On a game-play level, it’s puzzles are infuriating and nonsensical. Key item placement is obtuse and requires tedious pixel-hunting. The mere act of using items and solving puzzles is a hassle due to the abysmal, non-intuitive controls. On a user-experience level, it’s unusable. Poor user-accessibility and user-interface design. And on a writing level, it is uninspired, boring, and riddled with forced-exposition. There are no interesting characters. No interesting dialogue-exchanges. No interesting motivations. Nothing. This game is in such a broken state. There is a fine chance you won’t even be able to beat it due to the technical issues abound. The only redeeming aspect is that all the broken bugs present are amusing in some sense. It’s a “detective” game where you don’t actually talk to suspects. Don’t bother. There is a myriad of excellent, story-driven detective experiences on Steam. This ain't one of them.
I want to preface this review by saying that I have yet to play the VR version of this game, only the flat-screen version. However, playing the game like this should be satisfactory as it is, in fact, a way the game gives me to play it. When I started the game, I was confused about how to use the scanner to unlock the door, as it presented me with the tooltips before I had turned the power back on to be able to use the scanner on the door, creating sequence confusion. Afterwards, there was a puzzle using a ladder that was very confusing for me. I don't know if it was because I was playing on flat-screen, but I found it impossible to climb the ladder, leading me to find a handy tool for solving some of the puzzles in the game: prop surfing. I found a piece of metal, placed it under my feet, and grabbed it, sending me flying through the roof and letting me jump off the map, resetting me to a lobby room. I used this tactic with objects such as a potted plant and a pizza box to get into rooms I could not figure out how to, which I found pretty enjoyable. It gave me a shock, however, to know that this was even possible. I found it quite hard to hear the people speaking, as there aren't any sound effects settings in the settings, just master, music, and voice. Some weird textures were clipping. Some rooms seemed very bright when a room right beside them was dark, making the lighting look weird. I couldn't get into the story partially because it was hard to get invested when everything seemed buggy. I like the premise of the game, but in its current state, it's rather unplayable, at least in the flat-screen version. However, some bugs, such as the strange textures and lighting, would nonetheless carry over to the VR version. I enjoyed the music, as well as most of the voice acting. While some lines were cheesy, I never thought anyone had to force things. The environment also gave me some generic space vibes, leading me to need help understanding the game's theme. I was curious whether it was a mystery game, a horror game, or something obscure. I would love to play this game if it were in a more playable state. It feels rushed to me. I like the idea for this game, but it feels like a tech demo more than anything else. For me, it was hard to play it.
After wasting an hour of my life on this game I wanted to know if the developers would ever deliver on giving this game the updates they promised. However, the more I looked into the company, the more I started to distrust the developers and the company as a whole. In this case, GiB Games have (most likely) ditched supporting this product indefinitely, only updating the game with a desktop mode feature and nothing else seemingly since its release over a year ago. With the game still being completely riddled with bugs, visual glitches, glaring UI difficulties, puzzles that make no sense contextually, having rampant amounts of AI generated artwork that isn't consistent, lacking an art style, zero optimization, and no support for Windows Mixed Reality users. They have also announced that they have started development on another game, SCP: INFOHAZARD on their website (https://gib.games). Which makes it apparent that the developers have not at all learned their lesson from this endeavor. Either those working at GiB Games are blissfully amateur or they are running a scheme. It’s also important to note that a negative review of this game that went deeper into the company’s misdoings was mysteriously taken down and it’s up in the air on who was responsible for its deletion. I must warn you: UNTIL THEY FIX THE GAME, DO NOT TRUST THIS DEVELOPER!
The Callisto is a murder mystery in which you explore an empty hotel in space. Since this is an early access title, I'm not going to beat it up for early access issues; there are a few bugs, but overall the narrative is good and the voice acting is very good. The developers are actively working on the title and I see that I've had a few updates since I got it. Currently I'm about a half an hour in, which is not really enough time to evaluate a game of this scope, so this is more of a placeholder review - I'm downloading the updates and I'm going to put a lot more time into this title - I think it's a little rough around the edges yet, but I'm going to tentatively recommend this - it needs a little more polish, but it shows promise. Cold Start: The Callisto is an Early Access sci-fi VR exploratory puzzle game. It worked on my HTC Vive and Index system, looked ok, played ok, sounded ok. Has 7 steam achievements. Does not have tutorial or much in way of help. Also can be played on monitor with keyboard and mouse. You do have full locomotion or teleportation available, along with smooth or snap turning. You can play comfortably seated, you can crouch down by pressing downwards on the joystick. Maybe buy this, if you like sci-fi VR exploratory puzzle games. I got a free key for this from the Steam Curator program. ViVE VR curator group
