Midnight Mysteries

One of the earlier HOGs that aged badly. There is no narration, the display ratio is like 640x480 and blown up to fullscreen, it is really hard to make out any objects in the search scenes. The puzzle and story presentation is barebon at best. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this HOG.

[/h2] “[i]Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,[/i]” begins [i]The Raven[/i], a story that sees a distraught man lamenting the loss of his lover, Lenore, receive a visit from a mysterious raven late at night. Just like the story, this game begins with the quote and a raven visiting us. He taps on our balcony door, leading us to meet the spirit of Edgar Allan Poe, the master of the macabre. Poe tasks us with helping to solve the mystery surrounding his death to set him free, which will help us with our case of writer’s block. The game will take players from his final resting place through some of his famous works like [i]The Gold Bug[/i], [i]The Mystery of Marie Rogêt[/i], and others in our quest to his mysterious demise. Who killed Poe, and why? It’s up to us to solve this mystery and learn the truth of what happened to one of the greatest writers to ever live. As a fan of Edgar Allan Poe’s works, I knew I had to check this game out, and what a perfect time to do so. One aspect of his life that has always been interesting is the mystery surrounding his disappearance, reappearance, and eventual death. This game explores that aspect, utilizing and incorporating a few popular theories (Elmira Royster’s brothers being involved, a man named Reynolds, etc.) I think it uses these theories well, creating a unique and intriguing story that kept me engaged as I played. While the game is slightly older and simple, I still found it to be very atmospheric and fun. I do agree with other reviews that this is a relaxing type of experience. To add to this, the hidden object scenes aren’t too tricky, but there were some where I found myself having to get closer to my screen. If you can overlook the dated graphics, simplicity, and lower-resolution issues mentioned in other reviews, I think players will have a good time. This was so much fun that I can't wait to check out the other [i]Midnight Mysteries[/i] installments! [h1] 4 out of 5 ★★★★☆! [/h1]

Too old and outdated. The other 3 Midnight Mysteries are much better than this...

As others have said, this is an old-school Hidden Object Game (HOG) that runs at a a low resolution by modern standards. At also has no voices and only text on screen. It is also very much of the style of someone putting hidden elements into a 2D picture and not placing them into a 3D scene where it makes sense. That means objects to find might be in the clouds in the sky or be found in the shape of the folds of a garment. Items will float on the ceiling just because that blends in with the background more, and the scale will be simply random so that a bicycle in the distance would actually be three times the height of a man.That said, if all you want are searching for hidden objects then that is pretty much all this game does. This isn't a puzzle game with occasional hidden object scenes; as soon as you finish one scene you will be immediately transported to the next and given the list of things to find. No wandering around trying to figure out where to go next. I found this to be rather refreshing. It does have a reasonable story, but that never gets in the way of good old looking to random items.So if you are a HOG purist, then this is a good game for you. If you prefer to play casual adventure games with some HOG puzzles, then it may be worth looking for some other titles. If you are the latter type of gamer, you may still find it welcome change of pace like I did when I played this straight after playing a couple of other HOGs.

A dated HoG with a lacklustre story and more Hogging than puzzling. There's simply better out there.

Was playing thuis game and it quit working. Tried verifying and then tried reloading still not working . It and the other games of this set all quit. I wasted my money please don't do the sasme thing.

Pretty simplistic HOG with good production values and nice music make it a worth while play, just don't expect complex puzzles or an extreme challenge. Takes 5 or 6 hours playing casually. Recommended.

Thumbs up for the puzzles and 80's "Unsolved Mysteries" soundtrack. It brought back memories of the ghost episodes.
