You find yourself in a darkened maze at the stroke of midnight. But the wolves howling, the blades sharpening and the crows calling out tell you that you are not alone. The only question that remains is how many times will you die before you stumble upon the exit to this fiendish construction.

About
Midnight Murder Maze is a top-down game about finding your way through a pitch-black and very deadly maze. Expect to leave a trail of blood and bodies as you tirelessly search for the exit.
In the late 1800's the sociopathic Contessa Desmodonia von Macelar built the maze and regularly ran her peasants through it... for her own demented goals. It is your job to guide your character through the maze searching for the exit while at the same time dodging lethal traps and occasionally picking up the few bits of help scattered around. Like any good predator, the Contessa surely loved to play with her victims.
Midnight Murder Maze includes:
Absolutely unique mazes, randomly generated for each run.
5 varying levels of difficulty that each changes:
Maze dimensions from 20x20 up to a gargantuan 100x100
Number of deadly traps
Number of useful 'trinkets' that the Contessa left for you
Save system so that you can pick up a longer run later
A truly unique score-keeping method
A final 'brag screen' that you can use to challenge your friends to run your same maze and attempt to beat your score.
The Maze is the first published game by Rum Shack Studios, a small (4 person) team of game players, designers and dreamers who have big plans for the future. We hope you enjoy it and look forward to hearing your comments!

Already a fun little game! At the easier difficulties you can quickly get used to the concept, discover power ups and form some basic strategies for solving the maze. Once you get to the harder difficulties, the question becomes how many bodies will haunt your screen when the finish line is found at last! Most liked things

The ambiance and art style are nice! I like how simplistic things are, while still being clear and recognizable. That's an achievement in and of itself.
Variety of traps. There could be more, but I think as it is it's already varied enough to remain interesting.
Especially that little (big) freak who eats my corpses. Kept me on my toes!

Some powerups stay, some reset. I think it was a good touch that the compass doesn't stick around after death, else it would have become too easy. Finding a spotlight is always nice and exciting.
Having seeds is cool, I can see this being a fun party game where a bunch of people all join with the same seed and compete for the best time/body count.
Most disliked things

Required progress resets. Being punished for not noticing a trap and blithely walking through it is one thing, and I died from that plenty. However, it seems like for saw traps and spike traps there's no way to avoid them, even if you know they're there. Lots of times I backtracked to try and find a way around and just couldn't. I had to build a bridge with my body. Which... Maybe that's the point. But for someone categorically *terrible* with directions, it's pretty disheartening to feel like I got really far then get killed by something I knew was there but had no way to avoid. Having some form of very-difficult, but technically achievable dodge/deflect/whatever would be really nice. Even if it was a power-up that you had to gather and then expend (maybe a one-time use shield that you have to trigger with a keystroke at a specific time before being killed?)

Some additional thoughts/ideas

Possible "negative" powerups?

Something that resets traps if you touch it? Or maybe a stationary enemy that does that?
Something that temporarily restricts vision even more than the initial sphere, while calling dogs after you?
Body cleanup which removes bodies from the map, removing important landmarks
Ghost "powerup" which sometimes spawn over your bodies -- If you touch them they take control and send you running through the maze randomly for a certain number of seconds.

Summary Screen ideas which could be cool to have as part of the final review process

Time stats: Total run time, average attempt time, time of final attempt
Death stats: Total deaths, deaths by traps, average distance from start/end at death
Powers Found: total found/total % found, breakout of which power ups found
An overview of the map with little red dots showing where the player died most, blue for starting spot, green for exit, and a line showing the final route they took? Bonus points if a line showing the most efficient path is also included. (Note: I could see an argument against this in case people want to reuse the seeds and want to avoid cheating... But at the same time, who wants to play with someone who's gonna be such a little baby and cheat when challenged to a Midnight Murder Maze duel?)

This game is really fun, especially for people who love maze games (like I do!!), crash test dummy defintely resonates with me in many many ways. Fun and engaging gameplay, and awesome lighting mechanic. WARNING: THE EXPERT LEVEL IS REALLY HARD BUT REALLY FUN :))))
The game is very fun but even on easy it is a bit hard. I wish we could distinguish a bit better between the different characters. Over all a fun little game to play solo! :)
This game is honestly really enjoyable. I don't know of any actual maze game out there, especially not one that pits you against a MULTITUDE of enemies. and challenges like this. Be on the lookout for those power ups, and best of luck in this pit of despair!
This is by far my favorite game! I love how some power ups stay with you once you get them but others you have to gain back. I can genuinely say this is one of the first games that I've been invested enough in to actually yell at my screen when I die. I can already feel the hyper-fixation forming and can't wait to keep dying!!!
This game is really fun but frustrating at the same time. There are many different types of mazes that will be generated. You will never get the same maze twice unless you put in the code for it. There's 3 power-ups you can find in the map; a lantern that makes the maze brighter, a speed boost to make you run faster, and a compass that tells you which direction the exit is. If you get more lanterns, you get a brighter area to see where you're going. If you pick up more than one compass, it tells you where the nearest power-up is as well as the exit. There are several traps in the game that make it frustrating. You can outrun/juke some of them. Overall I'd give this game a 4.5/5 stars.
It's a fun game! It does a good job of keeping you stressed. The sound design is quite good and really helps with that. Even after playing multiple times and knowing what to expect, it still jump scares me! Certainly not the most polished game in the world (UI and scene transitions specifically) but it's certainly a fun game that's worth a few dollars to any horror fan who's bored of the same old games.
Super fun game! The right balance of frustrating and rewarding. It's fun to jump between trying to get a deathless run and trying to trigger every trap possible. Lighting and audio add to the atmosphere to give off a tense vibe - but not too scary so suitable for a range of ages. I've enjoyed playing this & would recommend to anyone who enjoys similar :)
Killer jump scares. Clean graphics. The Extreme level lives up to the challenge, spent an hour piling up corpses trying to find my way out. I will defeat you Contessa!!
This is not your typical maze crawler. It's a descent into tension, fear, and the unknown. What sets it apart is the suffocating pitch-black environment and the lurking sense of danger around every corner. You aren't just navigating corridors; you're trying to survive them. Every step forward feels like a gamble. Is it a safe path, or are you walking straight into a deadly trap? The knowledge that someone--or something--is stalking you makes every decision feel heavy. Midnight Murder Maze is a chilling experience that blends puzzle solving with survival horror. It's not for the faint of heart, but if you're looking for a game that pushes you to the edge of your seat and keeps you there, this is one worth getting lost in.
