There's a space station where robots with human intelligence have been created. That would be great if it weren't for the failed mutiny that's now got the space base on an extinction-event collision course with Earth. The only one who could stop it was one of those new-fangled robots, a Metallic Child named Rona. The bad news is that she's been so badly damaged she can't move on her own. The good news? You have made contact with the ship's systems and can repair her and control her to help save humanity! Metallic Child is a top-down brawling dungeon-crawl. Hades really showed everyone how to make a good game in this genre, though Metallic Child does a fantastic job of differentiating itself. Across your runs, you power up static abilities all while juggling randomized ability Cores you pull from defeated enemies and loot. Cores rapidly degrade and having three at a time awards a powered up state, so it's a constant shuffle of what three various effects you may have at any given time. There are even negative ones with some interesting results, such as a spam filter that blocks your camera feed of the game screen with pop-ups. Negative Cores do give you Bug Data, which is needed to unlock the more powerful static abilities on your regular level ups, so it can be conducive to just pick up every core you get, though that results in making it really hard to power up any one given ability that you might like, as you can't always choose what you're replacing. There is an element of choice, though with how it all winds down, sometimes that choice is minimal and, given the highly random nature of what's on offer, when a good build does congeal it often feels more like you lucked into a few good choices rather than any sort of meaningful decision making. Gameplay is split between fighting through stages or in downtime at your base, where you can spend collected points to upgrade Rona permanently in different ways, buy outfits for her that have unique power-ups, unlock fan-art, view cutscenes, and all that jazz. When you're ready to take on a stage, you choose which Metallic Child you're going after and then fight through three randomized dungeon layouts that all have a unique theme, hazards, and enemies for whoever your chosen boss is. Clearing an entire stage takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how thorough you want to be. Combat is a snappy brawl of an affair with just a little jank and a few too many options. The basic system is that anything special uses up your battery, which you can normally only charge up by landing basic attacks. I like that I can throw enemies into walls, hazards, and each other. I don't get much use out of jumping but it sure is there. You can skill cancel into your weapon swap to chain into the other weapon's skill and this hits for big damage if you can get an enemy to take it. There are dodge rolls but if you're using a weapon with a shield you get blocks and parries instead. You can find automated drones and sometimes get super gear with limited use time. Every boss awards a shiny super move you can use with their own limited means of gaining extra charges. Some of these are wildly overpowered! It's been a bit to acclimate to but didn't overstay its welcome at about 10 hours to clear. Folks looking for a challenge can play the harder difficulty that unlocks upon first clear and there are plenty of little upgrades and unlocks to work towards if you're into that sort of thing. All in all, METALLIC CHILD is a fun little time and worth playing if you're into this genre of game. The voice cast deliver fantastic performances, the characters are likeable, the plot has a few surprises, and the gameplay has just enough there to satisfy someone looking for just a little depth--so long as you don't mind upgrades being far more on the random side.
might be better to play with controller but alas, its good!
