Классический shoot 'em up, простенький клон Mega man'a.
Not worst Mega Man clone. Level design is mostly good but placement of some enemies a bit weird and hard to hit. Difficulty depending on stage medium to hard. At the end of each level fight with boss, each with unique move set. Gameplay is more about shooting at the right moment while dodging bullets and not falling. Mini boss during level may pop out, so make sure to hit them where it hurts (weak spot). Just like in MM games specific order in which you beat levels and gather new skills is mandatory otherwise it might be a struggle. Music fits in and visuals are good. Like Mega Man? Then check it out.
Jonathan Blow is considered as a hero by most of the indie game developers. Thanks to his magnum opus, Braid, they are able to sell their games independently. However, this change also opened a path to many bootleg game developers to pass their games as legitimate by one magic word: Inspiration. According to the developers of METAGAL, it is a game "inspired by Mega Man". Now close your eyes and imagine that you're in the early 90s, a cartridge with an artwork slapped on it that looks a lot like Mega Man catches your interest. You buy it, insert it in your NES and what do you know! It's a bootleg copy of Mega Man! Now open your eyes. We're in 2021 and there is no such thing as "bootleg game" anymore. Unless you're very dumb, it's fairly easy to pass it off as a legitimate one. METAGAL is a game that is heavily inspired by Mega Man and it usually crosses that thin line that separates a rip-off from an inspiration. There will be times that will make you question if it's an inspiration or a rip-off of Mega Man but in the end, especially after playing with other robot ma.. *cough* ...gals, you'll see that it tries to do its own thing as well. The passive upgrades that you collect for each character improve their own unique abilities and they all have quite interesting designs. The soundtrack is good, gameplay is like X series with the exception of wall slide, level design is alright until the Creeper Fortress 3, and it looks visually appealing. However, the story and script are poorly written and it is quite obvious that it was written by someone whose first language isn't English. They also tried to follow this waifu trend and it makes things even more creepy. Despite all that, it offers a fun gameplay. If you're into platformers that play like Mega Man, you'll get some enjoyment out of METAGAL too.

Metagal is pretty good, all things considered. The sprite work is exceptional, with lush stages and enemies, putting it up there with the best looking games of the 16-bit era, if not better. The characters are endearing, with plenty of charm put into their animations and details that might get overlooked. For example, the gals have really cute defeated sprites when you beat them, and I appreciate how Metagal's theme gets remixed to fit the stage whenever she's the boss of one of her sister stages. What makes this even better is that you can play as the four primary gal bosses after you clear the game once with Meta, and they each have enough to offer that they are basically transforming the game into a new experience with each playthrough, a very nice and unexpected touch which helps give the game its own identity. There's an obvious Megaman inspiration going on here of course, but Metagal feels like a honest homage with its own charm rather than a derivative effort. One of the differences is you can easily farm for lives, which can be used to restart at each screen or to even restore your health like e-tanks in Megaman. This isn't required at any point to complete the game, but it does make Metagal more forgiving than most. Your special weapon meter also recharges over time, and it's shared across all weapons including your charge shot, which is a nice touch that gives incentive to freely use every weapon you obtain. There's only a few of them, but the weapons you get are impactful and vital to traversing the stages and overcoming obstacles, so you want to use them as much as possible anyways. You won't be holding back on multiple full meters for a boss fight or swapping weapons around in an inventory screen like other megaman games. There are passive upgrades too of course, but you can get them in any order, and they'll unlock your potential in the same way. Like other reviews are saying, there are a few platforming issues, and the enemy placement could be better in some cases, but the controls are on point, and there's nothing serious enough to damage your enjoyment that a little effort can't overcome. It only takes a few hours for a first run to beat Metagal, then you unlock the other gals, power them up, and aim for more clears, or even speedrunning if that's your thing, since the game provides scoring based on your time. Overall, I'd say the price is a very fair point for the amount of enjoyment you get out of the experience. I really like Metagal and will be moving on to the sequel for sure.
This game is really good! I did not expect much, after reading many reviews, but was very pleasantly surprised! Had this game been released in the 90's, it would have become very popular! It's like Mega Man to Sega Genesis. If you like MM you will definitely like this, otherwise there is something wrong with you. People who complain are probably just bad and probably do not have enough patience to get through this, but I look forward to playing through this with all the characters! Also looking forward to playing "Metaloid: Origin", now that I found out it exists! The only negative is that it is a bit too short and that you can not jump when you are on ladders, as you are used to doing in MM. Otherwise, 10/10!
More a copy than some "inspiration"
For real, there are enemies and hazards that are straight copies from the the mega man games. Gameplay is very clumsy, why do I have to hold forward to use dash? It's annoying. The only difference, from being a simple low budget clone, is that they add weird waifu robots... So, why not a negative review? Because once you beat the game, you can play as the others "robot masters", and they play in a unique and much more interesting way than the main character. All in all, buy it at your own risk, and only if it's heavily discounted.
