Metagal is a fun, but flawed Mega Man clone. I really like the game graphically, and think the game feels pretty good to play too. It suffers from some level design issues, and repetitive music. But as a whole, I rather enjoyed Metagal. It's short, but fun, and offers that classic Mega Man gameplay. Are there better Mega Man clones out there? Sure. But for $4, Metagal is worth a playthrough. I feel a little bad because I have *almost* enjoyed both games from this developer. This one feels sort of partway between Mega Man and Mega Man X, perhaps a bit closer to Mega Man. Especially in the difficulty. This game is more difficult that I like, with checkpoints that are way too far apart. And this is really the entire reason for the negative review. Well, not really. I was on the fence from the difficulty, but the straw that broke the camel's back was getting stuck in the floor. I'd had a hard time even getting to that point and I sure wasn't gonna restart the stage only for it to maybe happen again. No. I'm done. Other than that I think the game does pretty well. Controls are responsive, the graphics are solid, and the levels are pretty interesting each with their own unique gimmicks and dangers. Oh, and final note - don't bother buying this for Steam Deck. This isn't affecting my review at all, but I first tried to play this game a couple years ago. To be fair something could have changed in that time. Anyway, you have to use a keyboard when you first launch the game. Okay, I can make a mapping for that. Then when you actually get in the game proper it pops up like "Hey, we found a controller. We're just gonna switch you over to that now." And so now the keyboard layout you just made no longer works. While I understand that the game wasn't designed for the Deck (heck, it predates it), there's really no excuse for waiting that long to detect a controller.
Despite the mixed reviews I went into this game to see why to examine it from a game design perspective. Right off the bat, the blurry text and the writing that needed an editor's touch left a bad taste in my mouth, but as I played the game, I began enjoying the top-tier graphics and pretty decent Mega Man-like gameplay with a reasonable difficulty if you're a fan of Mega Man-type games. Although it's not the best of the best that's out there, it's worth taking a look at.
I have never played the original Mega Man games except for Mega Man X but this is a fun time in a game with a Mega Man feel and difficulty but somewhat more forgiving. I would say the story is OK but the platforming and overall Game Play is solid. There are areas, mainly in the final levels, that feel more like trial and error than skill but the death system is fairly forgiving and allow you to farm for lives pretty easy. There is a glitch I found after the mini boss in the Buster level where, if you are to low and trigger the door, you can get stuck in the floor of the next section. Aside from that, I really enjoyed my time playing this game. Find a boss that you can beat without the other abilities and find out which boss is weak to that ability. The recharging special meter is a nice element and done in a way that doesn't make you seem too powerful. Definitely a must play game and a fun experience!
Based on other reviews and the relative obscurity of this game, I really didn't expect much, but it has ended up being one of my favorite pick-up-and-play games. While it's definitely carrying on in the tradition of the original NES Mega Man games, the controls are considerably tighter, even to the point of feeling jumpy in comparison. The level design is great, with plenty of secrets, reasonable enemy placement and patterns, and straightforward but fun boss battles. There's also an excellent amount of replay value since it's possible to play through the main game as the other boss robots once completed the first time. Considering the price of this game, it's a stellar value, in my opinion. I am writing this from the perspective of an old-school gamer who grew up with the original Mega Man and Mega Man X games. I didn't find the difficulty terrible at all, but it might prove challenging for those used to more modern games. Anyway, highly recommended as a basic platform run-and-gun.
Good game, also unfair and getting rank S in every stage is hard as balls... But it's frustrating not being able to play as Gal OX even though every other Gal is playable
