About
Command a strike force of marines, mercenaries, and criminals in a distant system, cut off from the Core Worlds. At the lawless frontier, the Wayback system is controlled by pirate warlords, questionable corporations, and fractured planetary governments who struggle for a new order. Though you initially lead your strike force of marines from aboard the strike cruiser TCRN Impetus, you'll quickly need to unite the disparate locals under your leadership to defeat an unknown threat. Fielding tanks, walkers, and infantry squads with a massive selection of equipment to choose from, you’ll train your troops, plan out operations, and engage in deadly tactical battles.
The developers of Battle Brothers take us to the far future in MENACE – a turn-based tactical RPG set in an isolated system where a strange new threat has begun to emerge.

Your Republic Marine Corps strike force has made its way over to bring the frontier back into the fold, but what was supposed to be a simple pacification mission revealed a threat that puts the entire system at risk…
Your approach is entirely yours to determine – as distress calls roll in, calling you from planet to planet, you can decide which to respond to, what resources to employ, and when to engage based on your readiness levels. Your choices will determine how the local factions feel about your presence, with a direct impact on your relations with them and what favors they may be willing to do for you. Will you prioritize relations with criminal elements that specialize in gathering intel, hacking enemy equipment, and securing the best deals from local dealers? Or will you ignore them and focus on the recovery and repair teams that keep your vehicles operational while supplying you with powerful advanced tech?
With all communications cut off, you're at the top of the chain of command, and your team of marines, mercenaries, and criminals turn to you for answers. Any single operation is not limited to one battlefield, instead taking you on branching paths of multiple missions each, asking you to engage in a series of battles across entire worlds. Make strategic decisions as you progress through an operation, choosing between the missions available to you – will you first take out the enemy air defenses that keep you from landing tanks? Or will you press directly into the enemy to rescue a group of hostages and gain the trust of the locals? Proceed mission by mission to complete the operation, and ultimately, further your grand campaign, but beware – every decision has serious consequences, not just for the operation at hand, but the entire system itself.
The strike cruiser TCRN Impetus acts as your base of operations, not only ferrying you between missions, but providing both orbital support and a place for much needed R&R. Invest in upgrading and customizing your mobile HQ to best synergize with your approach on the battlefield, seeking out opportunities among local allies to gain the upper hand for the task ahead of you.
Without access to your standard issue naval arsenal, you'll have to rely on local black market dealers and the spoils of war to equip your squads. From the jury-rigged war machines of the pirate factions to the refined, high-end arms of the local mercenaries, each engagement isn't just an opportunity to bring the fractured system under control, but to acquire new equipment to help accomplish your mission.

The threat of death is real as you find yourself pit against numerically, and at times technologically, superior enemy forces. Large engagements across diverse battlefields are subject to the effects of weather conditions across a multitude of biomes, and human foes are the least of your concern. In the recesses of the system, something alien has taken hold, and its methods are unpredictable and unrelenting.
Battles in MENACE are deadly affairs – under the hail of bullets, plasma bolts, and missile fire, you will face off against enemies that are well prepared, and ruthless. Expect to permanently lose squad leaders and their squads, and prepare to adapt to constantly evolving situations on the battlefield. Pacifying an entire system doesn’t come without a few risks, and superior tactical prowess will determine the victor.
Use flanking maneuvers to make your way around cover, or use heavy ordnance to flush enemies out from their firing positions. Rush from cover to cover as you plot pincer attacks, opening fire to suppress enemy squads and pin them in place while working to destroy cover they might run to. A tactical approach is essential to coming out on top but remember to stay on your toes – though you can plan around intel gathered for mission briefings, plans never survive first contact with the enemy.
Keep an eye on your weapons' efficient ranges, their damage over distance, and whether they're best used against heavily or lightly armored enemies. Even beyond accurate ranges, every round fired causes some degree of suppression to the squad it lands next to – whether they were the intended target or not, and whether friend or foe. With heavy fire more likely to pin an enemy down than small arms, you’ll be able to adapt based on the tools at your disposal, but make sure to adjust your approach as needed. Study the enemy to assess if you should be sniping from a distance or aggressively closing the gap under the cover of suppressing fire.
Arrive on the battlefield with a variety of vehicles - from troop carriers to MLRS to jury-rigged pickup trucks and more, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, and a variety of weapons systems to choose from. The firepower of a lumbering tank is immense, but the nimble walker is able to respond to fast-moving threats in an instant, rotating freely and quickly. Designated pilots are able to bring these vehicles to the battlefield, albeit at a high cost. Will you opt to bring in self-propelled artillery you’ve commandeered from the mercenaries at the cost of better equipment for your infantry? You might lose an entire squad, but the extra firepower might just be what secures your victory.
Use limited supplies to kit your squads out before each mission and ensure you're equipped for the task ahead. Infantry squads can swap their armor to strike a balance between protection and utility with additional accessory slots, where accessories range from drones to grenades to target designators. Each squad can be equipped from a wide selection of weapons with different advantages and disadvantages, as well as particularly powerful specialist weapons – everything from flamethrowers to sniper rifles to EMP cannons.

Pike is the model marine – loyal to the Republic, and a professional soldier, unwavering in the face of adversity. Rewa suffers from the trauma of past scars, a violent rage constantly boiling beneath the surface. Lim owes Pike for saving his home colony, and distrusts non-Marines – but he'll have to learn to meet them in the middle as the going gets rough. Every squad leader in MENACE has a history and personality, and as their commander, it's up to you to navigate the trouble that can bring.
From the marines you flew in with to the locals you need to recruit, each squad leader carries their own expectations and aspirations. Their accomplishments and failures on the battlefield will influence their leadership – a mission with multiple confirmed kills might help bolster morale for the following engagements, but a squad leader that sees their entire team eliminated might perform worse for some time as they regain composure. Will you take on the liability of an underperforming squad just because you need the numbers, or will you put them on leave until they recover, potentially jeopardizing the current operation entirely?
Squad leaders earn promotions and improve over time, giving you the option to customize them to your liking and improve their squad’s performance. Keep your squad leaders alive and choose perks from varied promotion trees, acquiring additional active and passive abilities to use against the enemy.
Each playthrough features a selection of characters from a massive pool – learn how individual backstories are tied together and prepare to navigate the unique combinations of each run. Stories unfold in unexpected ways as your squad leaders push from engagement to engagement. Watch them crumble under pressure from a cataclysmic threat, and do your best to train them for the fight against the MENACE.

With procedurally generated multi-mission operations and battle maps, alongside a big selection of characters and countless equipment options, every run of MENACE plays different from the last. Find yourself face to face with a seemingly insurmountable challenge that takes on multiple forms across playthroughs, and put your strategic and tactical prowess to the test in new ways each time.

This game has come a long way from a underwhelming strategy game to an in depth excruciating experience with genuine obstacles and challenges, especially on the higher difficulties. I love the enemy AI adjustments that were recently implemented, the AI used to chicken foot around the map trying its best to self preserve it's troops and run away when it didn't have a visual being shot at. Or not take shots at prime opportunities when my troops were vulnerable. That's definitely not the case anymore. All the enemies go balls to the wall to suppress, flank, and kill your troops if you don't break their morale or pin them down, especially the boarding commandos, they're absolutely terrifying early game. The AI isn't a pushover anymore. Enemies will jump out of heavy cover to shoot then run back behind it, enemy squadrons will flank when your troops are suppressed or pinned down, they'll reposition when you get a firing angle on them. There's also a plentiful variety of factions and troops you will fight in this game with different tactics/abilities. You really gotta think about every move in this game and possible outcome of what could happen, because if you don't your going to lose your most valuable people/vehicles PERMANETLY. And i'm a sucker for a game that doesn't hold your hand. I play Tarkov for christ sake. Always outnumbered and outgunned, you'll learn really quick how to be a full fledged strategist. Mechanics of combat in this game are extremely in-depth: Supression tactics, morality and fleeing, accuracy, weapons and their penetration against different armors, etc... There's so much to say that can't be put in this single review. The scarcity bartering system for new weapons/technologies from what you can scavenge from past battles is a very interesting concept I have not seen in any game. Squad leaders having an interactive system to react to what happened in missions/events; giving bonuses or penalties to combat ability depending on what happened keeps things diverse and from becoming mundane using the same units/loadouts every time. You'll likely won't catch a break long enough to ever feel like you have things under control, and the moment you think you figured it out you'll get hit with the biggest BS. Though the fun ends quickly each run since the game is in early development, i'm genuinely excited to see the further development of this game and where it goes (which is saying a lot because most games are sh*t nowadays). It's an turn-based experience that does not disappoint, and any strategy lover who's looking for a good game (with many detailed attributes) that gives a hard challenge should experience this.

First turn based RTS I've played and I am hooked! The gameplay feels polished and the world setting is immersive. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a strategy game.
cool
what is the point of having cover if enemy can just shoot thru everything and kill my squads like its nothing?
Menace is a standout turn-based strategy game that absolutely nails the atmosphere in both look, feel, and sound. It is amazingly fun to play and offers a satisfying challenge that keeps every mission engaging. I especially loved the different factions and how each one has its own distinct feel and style, which adds a lot of variety to the experience. I also have to give the sound track some love since it absolutely nails the vibe of the game and makes you feel like your in this world, I hope we get an expanded sound track when the game is completed. The squad leaders’ personality and utility give you plenty to experiment with, while the experience and trading systems make for deep character build crafting and tons of replayability. There’s a lot here for fans who enjoy thoughtful strategy and meaningful customization. I hope all fans of turn-based strategy games give this a try. Amazing this game is this good and its still a prerelease!
MY CIVIC DUTY IS TO RECOMMEND THIS GAME As a certified masochist who has survived the trenches of X-Com, X-Com 2, Chimera Squad, Aliens: Dark Descent, Battle Brothers, and Darkest Dungeon, I am here to tell you that this game is a glorious, full-man chest hair, red-blooded masterpiece. It hits that exact sweet spot of old-school, chest-hair-growing brutality where victory feels like a personal triumph for democracy itself. The difficulty is finely tuned. Can you win? Absolutely, if you have the tactical grit. Are you going to get out without a few body bags? Not a chance. Freedom isn't free, brother. Your success completely hinges on how prepared you are, and the game will happily humble you the second you forget to respect the chain of command. Let me tell you something: Every single firearm carries actual, tangible weight. When you spin up that heavy, it doesn't sound like a peashooter—it sounds like a localized thunderstorm of pure, unadulterated freedom. For a game that feels like an absolute steal at a garage sale, the graphics punch way above their price class. It looks incredibly crisp, proving you don't need a billion-dollar budget to look like a total badass. Peak 80s VHS action movie where each squad leader is memorable. Take Tech, for example—he is a raw, coarse-talking, hyper-masculine military stereotype pulled straight out of a classic action movie. "You are not Superman" by Murphy's Laws of Combat Operations. It treats the trenches just right. It has that X-Com mechanic; your men are going to suffer and run for the hills if punished enough. But what's different is this goes both ways; enjoy the view as the opponent runs for the hills while your two-story mecha suit cuts them through with Gatling guns. Also the devs are constantly cooking. They drop consistent updates, and every single one adds just enough new flavor to make you want to scrap everything and enlist all over again. I am currently on my third playthrough, and I haven't even finished the main game yet because every update makes me want to start over and deploy a fresh squad into the meat grinder. 10/10. Buy it, lose your squad, shed a single, masculine tear for the fallen, and do it all over again. HELL YEAH, BROTHER!
More like SEX-Com! Because I'm gonna ♥♥♥♥ it! Cuz I like it!
I'm enjoying this a lot!! MENACE has amazing tactical depth without it feeling burdensome or difficult to get into. You can use a massive variety of small arms, support weapons, drones, gadgets, transports, tanks, air support, orbital bombardments and more. And all of this feels super immersive - just seeing marines disembark a transport and take cover behind it is chefs kiss. Ballistics simulation is awesome. I would call the setting sci-fi light - much of the gear is available today, so also OG military fans would enjoy it. The story, dialogue and text blurbs are great with plenty of satire and references to today. So already the game in its current state is unique and provides lots of turn based tactical fun. Most importantly though, I'm convinced there is the right mechanical scaffolding in place for tons more content to come. New gear, factions, enemies, modifiers, mission types, perks, etc. What I've also read is that Steam Workshop support is on the way. The modding scene would be awesome with this game as its base. Total conversions like 40k, Star Wars, or even historical/modern day military would go very hard. Please make it happen :) WHAT TO IMPROVE - below. Essentially suggestions for making the game more accessible. I go into detail because the devs requested feedback as part of early access. It's just spelling suggestions out in detail, don't let the volume of text dissuade anyone ;) Explain the turn-based mechanics more. The way it works is that you select any one squad you want to act with, and when you finish acting with that one squad, the enemy does the same with 1 squad before your next squad can act (the AI is quite good at spotting opportunities, e.g. melee xenos will always use the opportunity to jump you, so prioritise targets), until each side runs out of available squads (enemy squad symbols are greyed out if they already acted that turn). Then it's the next turn and everything starts again. This took a few re-loads of my first mission to figure out and could be communicated better so the game is easier to get into. Even communicating what the greyed out squad symbol means would help significantly. Line of sight indicators could be clearer. Some structures provide cover and can be seen through. Others provide cover and cannot be seen through. When manoeuvring around the latter, it was not always clear which tiles would actually give me line of sight to a certain target. This happened e.g. when moving to target an enemy around a corner, which made me waste action points on movement. And wasted AP can hurt - more below :) Enable saving during a mission. Please :) Will make life so much easier. A) people are busy and it's nice being able to save and shut the game anytime. B) Mis-clicks and wasted action points can be deadly. It's not nice mis-clicking, wasting AP, and not being able to take down an incoming squad of aliens because of that, who will tear your squad up on their next turn. You can already save scum in this game by loading to before the mission started. It's just that missions can be up to 40min long and making a mistake at the end and then having to replay everything is a waste of the player's time. I suggest a normal mode with full saving capability (in and out of missions) with limited achievements and an iron-man mode where you can also save in and out of missions but have only one save that overwrites, with full or extra achievements. (Darkest Dungeon has this for example). Balancing of certain weapons and stratagems. Some should be more powerful. I only tested it once and with the first, basic version (Main Battery Salvo), but the orbital bombardment still feels underwhelming. One unit was inside the main blast tile, another adjacent, and both enemies, although taking damage, were left standing after a salvo of three massive shells. Should be more boom. Also the U60A1 HWCM Mortar. I got direct frag shell hits onto unarmoured aliens and it did barely any damage.
