Maze: Subject 360 Collector's Edition

The dream catcher fight toward the end was horrible and ruined the game. It can't be skipped so I couldn't finish, Full on NO for me.

Creepy story, great art style, excellent sound track, no overly repetitive tracks No game bugs. Puzzles were fine though I had to skip 2 of the ones that relied on guessing combos, as the amount of possible combos.. would have been just ridiculous. Decent amount of playtime. However, I did have trouble with the amount of flashing light effects. There was quite a lot of lightning scenes, and some sudden bright white moments, so heads up if you have lights sensitivity issues. All in all though, a great little HoG, nice to get some more creepy ones every so often.

[h2] Welcome to The Maze, Subject 360 [/h2] I was randomly scrolling through my list of games on Steam, trying to decide what to play next. After [i]Watch_Dogs[/i], I knew I wanted something that would be relaxing and not cause annoyance or rage. I noticed this game, and I thought I’d give it a try. Let’s just say I wasn’t expecting what this game would be, but in an excellent way. [i]Maze: Subject 360[/i] puts players in the role of Christine Mack, a woman who wakes up in a room, not knowing how she got there in the first place. A telephone rings and a little girl’s voice comes through. She calls us a subject and informs us that if we want to enter her sanctuary, we must prove ourselves worthy. She’ll put us through a series of tests, but can we pass? Remember to find a way out, or you’ll never leave… Also, remember to never fall asleep. Before playing, this was the first time I had played through a hidden object game like this. As a horror fan, I loved this a lot. The use of jumpscares was really well done; some actually caught me off guard. Graphically, the game’s very dark and grainy, but there is a good amount of color, so it all works together. The sound design in this game is also excellent. Players can choose between four different game modes: Test Subject (Easy), Escapee (Normal), Chosen (Hard), and Free Will (Custom). So, however you want to play, you have options. The game’s hidden object scenes and puzzles are pretty straightforward; in each HOP, you can find morphing objects that are slightly challenging. I had to stare at the screen for a minute or more to see each. Throughout the game, you can also find swirls that act as collectibles. Furthermore, achievements are included, some of which were difficult to get. Overall, this was a tremendously creepy game with an exciting story, spooky visuals and sounds, and fun gameplay. I wish the second, third, and fourth Maze series games were on Steam, but they are on Big Fish Games, and the fifth is on here, so I’ll have to check them out. As a start, this was really good! Will give the one thing up front that I might feel would be a huge turn-off for some gamers who like spooky games: WARNING: This game contains many jump scares. If you despise that, you may want to find something different to play than this. Okay, now back to the main review... I'm really into playing HOG's. I play loads of these types of games. I went into this one with the desire to play something new and original...and spooky. I got it for sure here! As for features, there's a map function (where you can fast travel to other areas of the map you're on) and it's supposed to show where there are things you can do, but I never saw that on mine. There's a hint feature, but I almost never needed it. That's not because the game isn't challenging. It is. It's just that it's not really one of those hated "pixel hunting" types of HOG's. I bought the Collector's Edition and there was supposed to be a guide. I opened it and it was completely black. No text. Am assuming this is a bug and not a feature. There are achievements, but once again (as is the norm with these types of games), they do not translate to any type of Steam ones. The achievements are all kept in game. There's the "find a morphing object" in all HOG's one and a "Find the Madhead symbol" in the regular map ones. Nothing that you haven't seen done similarly in other HOG's before. If you find all of the Madhead ones, you can get an extra HOG at the end of the game. Don't stress too hard to find all of the symbols because you can go back at the end of the game and look for ones you missed. There's also a fun little jigsaw puzzle, which was nice. There's an extra chapter, which I enjoyed. It wasn't too short and it wasn't too long, which I appreciated. It was also tied in nicely with the actual main story of the game. The main story was really quite good, even if the main villain became annoying as heck at times. I'm not sure if she was meant to be that way or if it was just my own interpretation of her. She was definitely unique, compared to other villains in HOG's I've played. I just think the old adage of "Less is More," might've helped here. Having her appear to harass the protagonist (Christine) on rarer occasions would've probably been better. It would've kept some of the mystery longer and I think it might've gotten rid of a few of the (way too many) jump scares in the game. Also, the maze itself felt a bit short, compared to the rest of the game. It might've been nice to have a few more rooms there to do before we "escaped" and went to figure out the rest. However, compared to most HOG's I've played over the many years, it is definitely ranked near the top for me. It's really that good.

This is a HOG mixed with action adventure and horror. The scares in this one actually had me jumping! The puzzles were creative, the story kept my interests throughout and the art was quite lovely. If you like HOG and horror, give this a try. I got about 7hrs worth from it and I think that's definitely worth the $10.00 they are asking for. I hope to see more from this team in the future!
