Target Audience: Masochists Summary: A Quiver of Crows main problem has to do with its difficulty. And let's be real: Shoot em ups and top down shooters can be at their best when they've got the player being put into some of the most difficult situations. But there's a difference between Difficulty and Fairness: and the fairness elements is where A Quiver of Crows starts to fall apart. With high respawns and not giving you a reasonable set of tools to go after them with, a run can quickly fall into despair as you realize you just weren't going fast enough. You can speed off screen to get into the next section, then already have 10 enemies on top of you because of their relative speed against yours. The main core problem here is the combination of the mechanics: each individual mechanic works such as the ragdoll corpses or the black aesthetic. But when they combine together, it becomes clear that one doesn't compliment the other: they sometimes fight each other. Sometimes the game wants you to go fast because of the respawn rate being so high. But at the same time, certain enemies need you to take time to go through, meaning you need to slow down. The dark aesthetic works well against light backgrounds: but when the same backgrounds is what you're firing against, and you lose those lasers into the backgrounds: you've got a problem. I feel like the game itself needs major tweaking: but once that tweaking happens: there is something under the surface to enjoy here in the top-down/shoot em up genre. But until then, it's a game that will frustrate you in all the wrong ways. Video Review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VuKfPr8MmI Lists: Positives:

The simple style makes for a striking aesthetic, one that is really nice to look at. It's not Limbo persay, but the black does really do a good job of highlighting the action.
The ragdoll corpses can be pretty hilarious at times.
At the core, each of the different mechanics elements do work. Whether it be the speed the fights take place on or the strengths of the different weapons, they all have basic good design structures at the core.
The upgrades giving more personality to weapons is nice to see.
Some of the enemy designs are rather interesting, and their variety in AI is good.
The music is appropriate for the setting.
No major performance issues.
Negatives:

The Feel. What I mean by this is that the mechanics don't feel like that work together. For example, the game makes it clear that you need to avoid enemy damage, and taking your time on certain enemies is necessary. With that said, it then respawns enemies at a high rate....meaning you need to go fast. But you need to go slow as well. That's where the problem is: the game gives you conflicting messages.
Laser and Fire effects can easily be lost in the background at times, which becomes a major problem in a game that has you dodging left and right.
It can be really hard to tell if you're hitting something. Sure, you can tell if something is dead via the lack of red in the creature: but whether or not you're doing damage is a different story. And with the higher speed of gameplay here, you feel like you're just firing randomly at the air, hoping that something works.
Respawn rate versus Fire power doesn't seem to be of the right proportion. You can get overwhelmed easily in several stages.
While the corpses are hilarious, they get in the way especially in small corridors. This adds to the difficulty in a bad way.
Level design and enemy layout don't seem to work together well at times. Like the random locations that enemies spawn at don't make sense given the level design.
A lack of repeatability in Enemy AI that you can reasonably try to use.
The sound at times drills into your head and makes you want to blow out your ear drums. The fast forward attack (the green arrows) constant sound when firing is just so grating.
Weapons can be a little hard to understand their strengths versus each other. They are very subtle.
A Quiver of Crows game. You, as a flying being, 'a crow', shooting with some lasers into some relentless ever-respawning undeads of various sorts. Now, I love the challenge in the games. But as of this one... the real challenge is not about managing that imbalanced 2d bullet hell type shooter. It's about finding the reasons to do so. I saw some players who actually vocalized they like this atmosphere of decadence and death. But that 'atmosphere of dance macabre' is actually the only 'positive' thing that is on the plate. Sure, the visuals are decent, for a side-scroller, and there is some 'advanced' physics of flying bones, distracting you and making you waste some of your shots. But that's about it. No reward, not a hint of what's going on... And yeah, total unfairness of the fight. I just wonder, how many players actually played it like it was supposed to by its authors? Steam statistics cannot be really trusted, since many players use SAM or something like this... And even the video of the game from the store page is looking like a rigged one in scenes of actual gameplay because that crow of yours is supposed to lose heaps of health and with that - heaps of DPS from those lasers, with every hit. Well, looking at reviews, there are at least some people who actually liked it, and the game's site page is still working, for about 5 years already. Maybe you'll like it in the end. Let my review not stop you from trying. But, as for me, I'll side with those guys who didn't get it. I'm not fond of the aesthetics of death and decay, I don't like it when someone spits in my face and saying something like the description of this game, 'have tons of fun'. My mark for this product is 4/10. Sure, the visuals are not bad... but other technical aspects are far from being good ones, and in general, it's still looking like a flash browser game for 5 minutes of your time - if you remember those. Except this one goes a bit longer. But why? What for?
Quoth the Raven «Nevermore.»
I wanted to like this game. The aesthetics are quite appealing to me. Unfortunately, I'm just horrible at it... and that's no fun. Usually, I wouldn't hold that against a game, but after browsing the forums it seems a lot of people agree that the difficulty level is absurd. It has couch co-op. Thing is with most couch co-op games, the person who is sitting next to you is usually a random you offered to play a game with. if you wanted to co-op this game; not only would you have to be a pro, but they would have to be aswell. There is no playing along, getting good... It was just frustrating and disappointing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8c8gsSK1yA
Love the graphical look of the game! Love the atmosphere! Love the music! I'm not the greatest shmup player, but the difficulty presented here by the fast respawn rate of the enemies and their swarming tendencies is something I can get behind. It's hard for me, but it's an enjoyable chaos. To a better player the dificulty should bring a lot of joy, especially if played co-op with a friend, If you're a fan of shmups and you like a challenge then you should give this game a try. If you tend to quit after you get swarmed and devoured on the first levels, then this is not the game for you.
И тут A Quiver of Crows пошла по стопам классики жанра.
This game needs some reviews, so I want to do a 2-hour first impression. The art in this game is astoundingly well developed. It wordlessly creates a lot of ambience as you fly your way through abandoned playgrounds and discarded remnants of civilization as a new dawn approaches a terrible day... You play a freaking bird with laser weapons. If you're still reading this, you want this game. It's hard. Quite hard, but it can be enjoyed in bursts of 10 minutes or a whole rage inducing hour. The controls are extremely tight, and the weapons and enemies are all interesting. My favorite are the basic enemies, which I call the "Dental Association" as they chomp me to bits. If you're still deciding, don't mistake the vehemence of angry gamers for the markings of a genuinely bad product.

– Be warned this can make you throw your controller.
– You can get stuck into object like the
Windmill
and more but happens sometimes.
