Here's the deal. This isn't the prettiest game you'll ever play. There's no gorgeous vistas to take in as you sail one of a bajillion boats along and watch DVD movies on an In-Boat entertainment system. It's not loaded with eye-candy fluff. It is an incredibly good tool to TEACH YOU HOW SAILING WORKS. How to actually sail a boat, how to handle a boat, how to hold a boat so you move along at 11.9 knots instead of 11.7 knots. How to "trick the wind" to let you work on the weak side of irons. How to make a boat pass around 5 buoys in the shortest time in a "never seen it before and never see it again" dynamic situation...and then getting that little endorphin dump to hear your own name called out as the winner of yesterday's daily race. Ya want a gorgeous game? Pancake Sailor. Want to learn how to sail a boat in a dynamic weather scenario where skill and decision-making is crucial to success? This one will please you and serve you well. If you want to LEARN, this is the one to get. If you want to dink around in a boat and learn nothing, but waste half an hour mindlessly? Look elsewhere. Right now I'm ranked 23rd in the world, 9th in my nation. I'm looking forward to breaking into the top 5, then top 3, and maybe even vying for top in my nation. If I'm lucky, that'll see me top-5 worldwide. Why? Because this sim is awesome!
Totally unrealistic sailing. For some reason its set so that going downwind is the fastest point of sail, which is the opposite of the reality of sailing. Close haul is the fastest point of sail because the shape of the sail acts like an airplane wing and creates lift, and pulls you through the water. Which is why the dead zone exists in the first place. In this game it has you going about 2-5 knots on close haul, and 10 knots going downwind. This is just the opposite of reality and frankly makes the game unplayable for me.
Two boats. Dull backgrounds. You want to use a Waszp? Get ready to pay a monthly fee.
Very counter intuitive interface, cant get anything done except join a regatta a sa guest. no instructons available anywhere.
This game has native Yaw pro motion simulator support! Mostly plug and play. Simply turn on your Yaw, get in, calibrate and then launch the game. From the main main menu, access the settings and you will find an obvious option to connect to your Yaw. This title isn’t like most Yaw titles, as it is a lot easier going sailing compared to flying. A very informative simulation. I know how to sail all kinds of boats now! 😎 Yaw Pro Motion Simulator Settings: Power - 45 Pitch Forward - 28 Pitch Backward - 32 Roll - 30 Yaw - Do not limit Yaw, keep slider at 180°
my first impressions of the game were pretty good, I enjoyed learning how to sail and messing around with the sails to get the most speed but now im seeing there is a subscription to use the multiplayer. I will say its a fun game but its not a game I would pay 100 dollars a year to play especially when you are selling 3 versions of basically the exact same game with 2 of those being flat rate games. I dont want to leave a thumbs down because I understand the purpose of making it free is to get people to try it as most people would just scroll by a sailing game but I do think the subscriptions need adjusted or made a 1 time purchase.
Sorry this sail boat game is bad to play for me!
FINAL REVIEW:
This has continued to evolve since release & has got better and better with each update. NOW I can honestly say it is a wonderful & Truly Realistic VR Simulation title that CAN Actually Teach You How to Sail. It can even help you to improve if you already know how to sail! Multiplayer Coop could be extremely entertaining too! (I would love to try it) In VR mode you do need a decent amount of space; the kind of space I am only allowed to use when the wife is away (our lounge with the coffee table pushed right back). You can play in a smaller space (as I did) but obvious limitations exist.
Honest Reviews:
POSITIVES

o Realistic controls, physics and even waves. o You can position yourself to physically control any part of the boat (Winches, Helm) o So much, MUCH content,; tutorials, Multiplayer (Solo/Coop) & Mini Games. o Numerous locations. o Lots to do, try and Practice! o So Much detail, post sail reflection, racing & Leaderboards. o Collisions are in the game. o Your body position affects the Dinghy. o Numerous Boats: Yacht, Dinghy, Catamarans & more! o Quite a few in game videos. o Spoken text. o VR and non-VR play modes. o AMAZING PRICE on Sale right now for £8 o Darker sections of water giving a gust of wind. o Sail balance, So important if you want to have an easy life. o Standard and VR mode (Work in progress). o More features to come!

NEGATIVES

o Sometimes the thumb-stick controls are not as responsive as I would like. o Game appears to control the lines even when I turn on full simulation mode. o Sometimes controls interfere with each other. o No Capsizing that I am aware of. o Dinghy tiller extension just did not work for me at all. o Some of the tutorials you self award...I wish this wasn't the case. o Locations are pretty limited, almost pointless (Cannot sail under Sydney harbour Bridge). o Controller support is lacking, cannot change keybinds. o Cannot walk around the boat currently.

MY RECOMMENDATIONS

o I would like to be able to adjust my position on the boat; forward, back, left & right. o I would like to turn on/off controls independently. o Way too much on screen arrows etc... Very distracting. o Complete control of the sheets and sails.....If I don't adjust them, they don't move. o Anchoring tutorials. o Man overboard tutorials. o Reefing Tutorials. o Ability to Raise and Lower Halyards. o Engine startup and controls. o MORE TUTORIALS in DLC. o More boats (Real life) you can use mine if you want!! o Wider field of view. 5 Seconds into the game, I got motion sickness from trying to Steer a boat. I have over 12,000 hours in SteamVR and NEVER quit a game faster. The game also uses a newer unity version, where if an AMD GPU is being used (to wirelessly steam via Virtual Desktop), it creates screen jitter for the user in the headset. Game devs - You cant do anything about this. This is Unity's problem with AMD and level 3 cache on the card. The UI is terrible - As a slight game dev myself, I know when I see default UI, and this was it. It was all over the place - and just general controls are really not really intuitive. (I apparently have to SIT instead of stand as the default experience??? HUH?) I use Index Controllers, and it was really not meant to be used with it. Shame. Could have at LEAST but a Hand model in here for index fingers! Tried going into a lobby, and no one was online. Shame, wish i could have learned something but judging from the screenshots from the games page, its Horizons head and hands with a chest with no legs ether. Models are pretty neat, but the first SECOND I got on the dock, i saw Z fighting on the railing (happens when polygons are in direct contact/overlapping each other) Well, and also using basic Unity shapes (Cube mostly) to create stuff and not really making a theme or adding anything visually. Honestly, looks like a VERY shawtly put together for being a 2024 game. I honestly have no idea how this got in my Library, but this is NOT worth 40 USD - and I sure as hell did NOT pay for it. Steam told me I last played this in 2010, which is impossible since my account was created years after. IDK what this is, but its going straight in the depths of my Recycle Bin. Sorry yall (well, and im not interested in boating.)
