A game about interior designing, creating small rooms that tell little stories. I’ve been obsessed with the sims for some time and used to aimlessly just create cute rooms and tell stories via those rooms, but my sims would ruin those rooms by, you know, living in it and creating messes. Let me introduce Make Room. This game is the charm of the building of the sims, but better because there are no bills to be paid, no sims that break your TV or repomen that take your toilet. It is just a cozy wholesome sandbox game where you endlessly and aimlessly design cute little rooms, gardens, campers, stores, kinda everything you can think of. (I lowkey created a cult room once 10/10) To make the customization process even more varied, you can also create your own items in the workshop program (just in the game) and upload them for other users to use. Or just gatekeep your art, that is also allowed. The game is kinda a sandbox so its as short or as long as your creativity makes it, but definitely fun to mess around in and especially if you’re looking to broaden your modding horizons, this could be a fun practice.
This game is cute but there are so so many nit-picks I have about it that it just irritates me more than I enjoy it. A few irritations that, on their own aren't a huge deal, but over an hour or so just got to me: - You can have sloped walls and you can stick angled skylights on. But only some of the slopes have windows at the right angle. - It feels like there's a lot of clutter missing? Perhaps more items unlock but the first "Challenge" I did was the artists studio and yet I couldn't find an artist items except like 2 pencils. I ended up setting it up like a "digital art" studio because they had tablets but not... paint. - Related, the categorisation of items feels all over the place. I later found brushes which would have been decent for the artist but they were in bathroom for makeup. Cushions are all in "beds" but not sofas. Almost wish there were different filtering options like in The Sims where you can look at items "by room" or "by category" or I dunno "by vibe" - I wish you could turn on snapping for some things. It's nice that I have full freedom to do stuff but it annoys me that I have to manually try and line up every single kitchen cabinet. Same for sticking stuff against walls - it's nice to have options but also sometimes I want to just be able to stick a sofa against a wall without worrying if its going to go through it. - More increments in the widget. Sometimes I want something to be at a specific height or angle or width to fit somewhere but the 0.1 feels very big still. - I love that I can change the scale of items but I wish things scaled nicer. For example, if I want to make a window taller, I want the window frame to stay the same width all the way around. Or a table, if I make it narrower, I wish I could just be changing the tabletop width, right now the legs get all skinny and uneven. - Wish there was more art? There's four designs that are like modern art type stuff and the rest is quite childish. I am not creating a nice room for an adult couple or something and then having clipart of a pumpkin, just feels a little odd. As I say, none of this is a big deal in isolation, but when this much gets on my nerves in just 80 mins, I feel like I won't enjoy playing much more.
I found the game disappointing and can't recommend it unless you're specifically interested in creating your own items to play with, or want to use the Steam workshop extensively. It just doesn't feel intuitive to play and I find the categories/item system to be really badly designed. The lack of item names on the item picker feels odd, but the way items are actually categorised is even weirder. Empty jars and cauldrons come under 'food', while cushions are under 'beds' but not accessories or sofas? Fans are grouped with lamps instead of electronics? Yes, there's a search function, but you shouldn't have to rely on the search function for something this basic. I would've liked more detailed objectives/tasks to complete; the ones in the game are very quick to complete. The cleaning function was cute but underutilised. The game has really cute aesthetics and cosy vibes. I really like that you can resize/skew items, and found myself using it a lot to get more realistic proportions for certain items. I did tinker with custom objects briefly, and it seems good for building items but I think it still suffers with a lack of item labels.
I feel bad not being able to recommend this game. It is cute, but EXTREMELY short with not a whole lot of content on offer. I say wait for a discount or some sort of sale, because $10 seems a bit steep. Admittedly, you could spend $10 on a lot worse games, but my point still stands.
good good good
I am a gamedev and this helps me make quick mockups for room BGs from different angles which I can use as a base to make illustrations. It's such a fun sandbox to tinker with, I love the variety of items available to make pretty cool set pieces!
kind of nice to use assets. gameplay part can be too confusing/restrictive goals? Also the editing part might not be the best/easiest type of editing for room creation. it's meh, but also nice to support the creator, so might give positive on that alone.
Cute. Cute. Cute. It's a very cute entry in the room design/decorate genre. Plenty of variety to make everything the way you want it to look. Basic tutorial, but most everything is intuitive so you won't need more than that. I wish the windows had views, but that's just a minor quibble. Overall, I can easily recommend this game.
Cozy decoration game with soothing soundtracks. Though there're not many items to choose from it's still good, just need to be creative. Hoomie is adorable when petted^^
I just made a room with a bunch of toilets, 10/10 game I can also make flies with the bee creature
