A fantastic metroidvania all around! Everything about this game is well done: Kickass music, lovely graphics, and great writing with the perfect smattering of humor throughout. Just the right amount of powerups and collectibles while also not too hard and not too easy, but very well balanced.
Reminds me of the games I used to make at unniversity.
A really solid metroidvania. The writing was charming and it had a lot of strong and creative ideas. Difficulty is not massively hard (although the last boss took me many attempts). You can tell a lot of passion went into this game, and it stands out as one of the more enjoyable metroidvanias I've played. Definitely would recommend
Magicians & Looters is a lighthearted yet surprisingly ambitious indie action-adventure that blends Metroidvania-style exploration, RPG progression, and tongue-in-cheek humor into a cohesive and enjoyable package. Developed and published by Morgopolis Studios, the game embraces classic genre conventions while injecting them with a playful personality that never takes itself too seriously. From the outset, players are thrown into a colorful fantasy world where magic, monsters, and absurdity coexist, setting the stage for an adventure that prioritizes discovery, experimentation, and character-driven charm over raw difficulty or cinematic spectacle. The premise follows three eccentric apprentice magicians whose mentor has been kidnapped, prompting a rescue mission that spans a sprawling, interconnected world. While the overarching narrative is intentionally simple, it serves as a solid backbone for exploration, allowing the game to focus more on moment-to-moment gameplay and environmental storytelling. Dialogue and character interactions are filled with sarcasm and self-aware humor, frequently poking fun at fantasy tropes, RPG clichés, and even the game’s own mechanics. This comedic tone gives the adventure a distinct identity, making conversations and NPC encounters memorable even when the plot itself remains straightforward. Gameplay revolves around exploration, combat, and progression, with a strong emphasis on nonlinear movement through a large, interconnected map. Players can switch freely between the three playable characters, each of whom has unique abilities, weapons, and combat styles. This character-swapping system is central to the experience, encouraging players to adapt their approach depending on the situation. Certain areas and puzzles are more easily navigated with specific characters, while combat encounters can feel markedly different depending on who you choose to control. This flexibility adds depth to both exploration and battles, keeping the gameplay from becoming stale over long stretches. Combat itself is accessible and fast-paced, combining hack-and-slash mechanics with light RPG elements. Enemies drop experience and loot, allowing characters to grow stronger over time through stat increases and equipment upgrades. While the moment-to-moment fighting is generally satisfying, it leans more toward consistency than complexity, and repetition can occasionally set in during longer play sessions. However, the steady drip of new abilities, hidden upgrades, and optional encounters helps maintain a sense of progression and reward, especially for players who enjoy thoroughly combing maps for secrets. Exploration is where Magicians & Looters truly shines. The world design encourages curiosity, with branching paths, hidden rooms, optional bosses, and shortcuts that gradually reveal themselves as new abilities are unlocked. Backtracking rarely feels tedious thanks to thoughtful map layout and frequent rewards for revisiting older areas. Multiple starting points and routes further enhance replayability, giving players incentive to return and experience the world from different angles. This sense of freedom aligns well with the Metroidvania influence, offering a satisfying balance between guided progression and player-driven discovery. Visually, the game reflects its indie roots with simple but effective 2D artwork that prioritizes clarity and charm over technical polish. Environments are distinct enough to remain memorable, and enemy designs fit the game’s whimsical tone. The soundtrack complements the action without overwhelming it, reinforcing the adventurous mood while letting gameplay take center stage. While the presentation may feel modest compared to larger productions, it suits the game’s identity and keeps the focus on exploration and mechanics rather than spectacle. Overall, Magicians & Looters is a confident and charming indie title that succeeds by understanding its strengths and limitations. It doesn’t attempt to redefine the Metroidvania or action-RPG genres, but instead delivers a well-rounded experience filled with humor, variety, and rewarding exploration. For players who enjoy character switching, light RPG systems, and a playful take on fantasy adventure, it offers a memorable journey that feels earnest, fun, and full of personality, making it a worthwhile experience for fans of indie action-adventures. Rating: 7/10
I picked this game in some greenlight bundle and didn't expect much from it. However, it exceeded my expectations. Combat is a little clunky and there's not a wide variety of enemies, but the music is decent and the environments are fun to traverse and explore. I got 100% in about 4 hours and had fun doing it. I'm pretty sure the game has been abandoned by the devs, so it's something to pick up on sale if you want a cheap metroidvania.
It's playable. It has items. Its ugly as hell. I figured it was a mistake purchasing it, but I wanted to give it a try. Honestly, if you are unlike me and can get past the graphics, you might find it okay as mechanically, aside from feeling very floaty, I wasn't having issues. ..I was too distracted by the abysmal art direction on my screen.
I played this years ago, came back to check on it and saw that it was kinda forgotten about. It's an underrated gem. Pick it up. I don't remember a lot of details, but I remember it being fun.
Originally for the XBox360's indie games platform, this is the perfect parody of the Metroidvania genre, and a must-have for those who like that genre.
