Being self-aware about an uninspired aesthetic is not a replacement for such.
Short but very well made metroidvania with a humorous story. Absolutely worthy the price.
GREAT! Similar to Unepic with the humor, plays more like axiom verge 2 I think…I bought this game on Xbox and again on steam, I haven’t even gotten too far, but I enjoy it so much. Again I’m late to the party, but I really feel that this game is something special, and everyone who likes metroidvanias with silly dialogue should play this!

no settings for adjusting the controls, of which the default ones are awful and make no sense. You either have to start a new game or set up new keybindings on load, which is ♥♥♥♥ because you can't test if they'll be any good in game and change them on the fly. No settings menu at all that I could find for that matter. It's one of the ugliest games I've ever played, honestly. The main character also looks like the same dude from Dungeons of Dredmor and there's some art style overlap - maybe the same person, idk. But regardless, it feels really unpolished and unpleasant to look at. Combat is what it is, nothing special or memorable. Pain in the arse with the default control setup. It's just a game. I don't know how it copped a 9/10 in multiple places. It's decidedly average and barely above a student project.
I need to leave more positive reviews on games I liked. This is one of them. Sure, the artwork is weird, but it grows on you. The humor is pretty great at times. However, most importantly, this game has it where it counts, gameplay. One of the better metroidvanias on Steam still to this day, and it's unique traits are genuinely cool. Each character has strengths and weaknesses, as well as movement. All in all, if you like metroidvanias, you will enjoy this game.
I enjoyed my time playing this game way more then I thought I would. The story is funny to most everyone but it is even funnier if you have play a good
or bad
game of D&D. You have three characters to chose from but given the type of game this is I was stuck playing the monkish acrobat as she has the best movement out of the three. You don't gain exp but do level up throughout the game with orbs you find across the map. These affect all three of the characters so no worries about the times you are forced to use the one you don't like. I played the game with a controller but not a Xbox controller. I did have to change the commands though. But you CAN change the commands, which is something some devs overlook. This game is a fun ride but very short for a Meroidvania style game. Bottom line is that if you want a light-hearted Meroidvania romp through a game world that you will never see again, give this game the time of day it needs to show you its best and worse.
Video review: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1427252905 Mechanics: You play as three different apprentices who each have their fighting style and unique abilities (such as a high-jump, slide, or wall-jump) which allow them to access certain areas the others can't. You earn money from defeating enemies which is used in shops to buy more equipment and in toll-a-warps where you pay a small amount to quickly warp to other parts of the world you've previously been to (very helpful for metroidvania type games). At camp fires, your game will save and you can switch to any of your characters. There are lots and lots of secrets in this game. The game teaches you early on that there are many breakable and walk-through walls where you can find hidden treasure. Among them are experience orbs which are the only way to level up (not by defeating enemies). Upon collecting enough expereince orbs, you level up and become stronger, thus encouraging exploration. There is also a single button press to toggle an overlay of your map on the screen (helpful). Story: Your primary mission is to rescue your mentor who is captured during a monster attack. Your party of three don't always get along and so they make jokes at each other's expense throughout the story. This game has a lot of comedic dialog. You can play the game's story in full or abridged (changed via the options menu) and even the abridged version, which changes most conversations to only a few lines, is still quite funny if you know the full version. The artwork is kinda rough looking and isn't pretty at first glance. You do get used to it and is fine for the comedic tones of the game. Additional Content: There are many secrets to find which include additional equipment and experience orbs. These things are not required to beat the game, but make the adventure go much more smoothly. Your characters all share equipment in a way that both the sword weilders can equip the same sword without it being hogged by either one. The same goes for other items. There is controller support, but you have to enable it in the options and the options menu is only available after selecting new game or load game (not from the main menu). Achievements are all good, encouraging you to complete the game minimum of once for 100% and a second time for a speedrun (2 hours) which is easy to do after you've been through the game, know where to go, can fight well, and know what to skip. There are also a few achievements for beating bosses in certain ways and for some funny things. Conclusion: This is a fun game that feels like a mix between a metroidvania and The Lost Vikings. It took me over 7 hours to finish and get 100% on one file, then another couple hours to get the remaining achievements on a second playthrough. I really enjoyed playing this game and wish there were more like it.
A fantastic metroidvania all around! Everything about this game is well done: Kickass music, lovely graphics, and great writing with the perfect smattering of humor throughout. Just the right amount of powerups and collectibles while also not too hard and not too easy, but very well balanced.
Reminds me of the games I used to make at unniversity.
