Mage Guard is one of the world's first truly gesture based spell casting games for VR. Take on the role of a Guild Mage, tasked with guarding the Guild’s most powerful relic, "The Grimoire". Being the last of its kind, you will defend it against countless waves of enemies that are trying to obtain the precious relic.
Experienced on the Oculus Rift
You can view my review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/5VpKAE4hJ54 This is a 180 degree wave shooter with gesture-based magical attacks. You can choose fire or ice spells of varying effects. There are 3 levels, each with a few waves. Enemies are rats, skull flying bats, and some warlocks/witches. You can spam the same spell over and over again. You could also try different spells. Doesn't seem to make any difference. Enemies will either run up right to you or they will run to a spot and do ranged attacks. Just spam your spell and you'll be fine. Whole thing can be completed in 15-20 minutes (maybe less). There's a story. The story is a few texts. Mostly instructions on how to do the gesture-based spells. The gesture-based spells sometimes work. I would say some spells work very consistently with the gestures, while others maybe worked half the time. Just keep spamming it though. The game was released in Early Access. The game feels like a demo. The devs, so far, have not kept any of their promises on the Early Access description. Basically, they lied and took my money and yours too if you happened to buy this game. Let this be another cautionary tale about Early Access games. Rate 3/10. I would recommend NOT buying this game. It's not worth anything. It's a demo and a poor one at that.
Gameplay: https://youtu.be/qbaL1t5AU8c Mage Guard is a gesture based spell casting game, the gameplay is like a wave shooter but instead using spells to destroy the oncoming waves of enemies. The idea is that you are trying to protect a previous relic called ‘The Grimoire’. The setting and design is beautiful, although the game is still in early-access and more content is promised, I found the gameplay in the current three levels available lacking. The gameplay simply involves defending yourself against enemies using spells, and the design is rather repetitive. To improve the game I would suggest adding much more to the gameplay such as more classes, more spells, some strategy or skill requirement to the gameplay such as a variety of enemies with different spells required to defeat them, a competitive aspect such as a leader-board, and maybe even the ability to play a co-op or multiplayer mode. The game also fails to take advantage of Virtual Reality, as you cannot move around your environment and simply remain in the same spot during battle. Currently I cannot recommend this title, as even an early-access game, the current content available leaves much to be desired. The game is extremely overpriced for what it currently offers.
A well themed VR rail shooter with an interesting input mechanic. There's something cathartic about waving one's hands around to hurl fireballs and icebolts at attacking monsters, It really adds to the immersion of being a wizard. Also adding to the immersion is the welcome lack of a UI and relying on the player memorizing the gestures themselves. Swapping elements to kill monsters is an interesting mechanic and I'm excited to see the ways it will interact with future spells and future environments. I'm most excited to see how the development on the explorable world goes. If it can capture any part of the Zelda dungeon crawl with the exploration than this game will be an awesome experience.
It's Very Repetitive. You cannot move from the spot, it forces you to slowly shamble in the intro, but after that it's a boring one perspective glorified game of soccer. Enemies have no movement pattern besides enter stage right and walk straight forward. Worth maybe $5 at most, but $20 is too much.
This is a very mechanical wave shooter. The spell casting is nice twist. It got boring fast, but what did it for me was the uncontrolled gliding movement. Not nice. At least you can still close your eyes in VR.
Needs some polish on some effects, but great potential. Visuals are really great in Vr, the gestures work great once u have the hang of it, Music theme really sets the mood, the skills are looking great. And I don't care that it's with waves so far as long as I can have magic in my hands. The only thing bothering me a bit is how the mobs die, feels a bit soft..I want to feel more power rushing through my veins and seeing them die accordingly. I only did the tutorial and 2 waves until now, but I already noticed more than my basic spells..So I can't wait to see how far it plays out! But then again, that's my inner me speaking.
