Mafia II is a game that had me flip-flopping on what I'd give it as a rating by the end, all the way through it. In one moment, it's nearly as immersive in its storytelling as the first entry, the next, I felt like I was playing a jank love-child forged in the throes of passion between early CoD and GTA. Much of the ambient realism Mafia I has is shattered as pedestrians ram you when switching lanes, hordes of cops and feds spawn within your line of sight ten feet away from you, barriers spawn in and out of existence, as do opposing gangs, and your wanted meter blips in and out in mere seconds. For all the story has to offer, the world takes it away in some pretty crucial moments. Overall, I say a "yes," only because the story is good, and it keeps you on your toes. Unlike The Old Country, you don't really see any of it coming, and it does make for some good gameplay, although I consistently could not remember if I had played the damn thing before, or only watched YouTube videos, so memorable, it is not, for whatever reason. Time and time again, I found myself going back between "Have I played this before?" and "I don't remember this at all." Beyond that, while the characters are unique and interesting, you play a wholly different individual than Tommy. While Tommy was an average guy who found himself in "the life" and struggled with the implications of his actions, Vito, for lack of a better term, is an evil man. He pretty much outright states this several times throughout the game. He's not unlikeable, per se, but he is certainly not sympathetic. He cares about his things, and the people in his life are kind of his things, and that's about the extent of his empathy. I don't think this is a poorly designed character, I think you're supposed to be playing more or less a sociopath in this game. This is okay, I feel, but you're not necessarily rooting for him at any point, and neither is anyone else in his life, really. Beyond that, the game itself is fun, albeit jank, and more than a little nonsensical at times. You're broken out of the immersion regularly by the world acting against itself in illogical ways, you have much less a feeling of freedom and control than in Mafia I, and it feels more like a GTA knockoff than a Mafia title, but it is fun, and it is entertaining, you'll just have to bear through some large technical issues by the end (3x+ dialog playing and overlapping in some scenes) and deaths/failures caused by the jank. If you can get through it all though, there is a rewarding experience here, and the Mafia I tie-in is truly a unique entry in the gaming realm to me, so overall it gets a "Yes" from me. Oh yeah, and the Playboy magazines...wholly unnecessary. Really shows they were shooting to "out-sex" and "out-violence" the competition at the time of development. I get that it was an era thing, in a way, and it's an adult game, but I would have much rather had no Playboy magazines in the game and the devs have spent that time fixing the jank and bugs, instead.
