About
MADO MONOGATARI began as a series of primarily first-person dungeon-crawler RPGs created by Compile for the MSX and PC-98 during the 80's and 90's. Since then, MADO MONOGATARI has made a name for itself with its unforgettable characters and dungeon-crawling gameplay. Notably, the renowned puzzle series Puyo Puyo is a spinoff of the MADO MONOGATARI series.
The Ancient Magic Academy.
An academy with a long, storied past, known as the place where The Great Mage learned and graduated. Students study here to become Mages themselves.
A girl named Fia, wanting to enroll in the Academy, makes a long arduous journey from her hometown, and manages to get in through her own luck.
She now tries her best to get through the many challenges of schoolwork, strict professors, and mysterious happenings, all in pursuit of her goal to become a Great Mage herself, while also making friends with other students in her class.
Embark on an adventure with Fia and her classmates as they explore the mysteries of the Ancient Magic Academy and uncover the legends of The Great Mage.
Crawl through randomly generated dungeons and engage in real-time, turn-based battles to help Fia level up. Use Magic Artes and collect Elemental Orbs to fill up your gauge and unleash Great Magic Artes. Manage your inventory and stats as you traverse floor after floor of wondrous treasures and magical monsters—including Puyo, Skeleton T, and others!

Keep track of unlocked abilities with the Grimoire, which logs Fia's Magic Artes. Complete Assignments, Help Quests, and earn Learning Points that can be used to unlock nodes in the Grimoire for Fia to learn new Magic Artes.
Take a break from dungeon crawling and explore the school grounds where Fia can check out the Bulletin Board for unlocked mini-games, interact with classmates, grow ingredients, cook curry for in-dungeon boosts, and more! Find out what other goings on await Fia along her journey!

In the Storage Room of the school grounds, use items found in dungeons to synthesize into new equipment for Fia. Better synthesis items can later be unlocked via the Grimoire.

The game is cute and the characters are fun, but the battle system is atrocious an just not fun at all. At least at the beginning of the game, there seems to be constant interruptions of the dungeon crawling for scenes (not just dialog while you are walking or fighting, but actual scenes that break up the action). In short, the battles suck and the game flow just isn't there.
This one hurts to review, but I can't fool myself into liking it. "Madō Monogatari", also known as "Sorcery Saga", is a nostalgic franchise from the 90's focusing on dungeon-crawlers. The characters would also appear in the puzzle titles "Puyo puyo". This game, released in 2024, is somewhat of a homage or love letter to the classic games, but it gets lost in time and space. We should highlight the good things: the characters, while following very standard tropes we've seen before (genki ditzy protagonist, tsundere genius, comedic relief hero, mysterious backstory, kuudere princess..) are cute. The opening is addictive, i love seeing that song when I start the game. The graphics and 3d design.. it really reminds me of ps3 models, but I mean this in a positive way. I found the art charming, overall! There is a massive issue, however, that weighs heavier than any of the positive points. The gameplay loop. ..While walking around in this limited map with barely any walking space, you select classroom and walk up to a board to grab a quest. You go to a cooking pot, you make curry to get a buff. You go to the dungeon. It is mostly corridors with recolours of the same enemy over and over again. The controls on pc feel very very clunky. Aiming to cast a spell with such a short range while having to dodge attacks and pick up the elementals doesn't feel challenging, just poorly planned. The battles are very repetitive. you press 'k' and walk in circles. you press k again. you win. I understand this was an attempt to try something different from turn-based rpgs, but there is a reason why they're popular and it becomes clear when fighting slimes in these dungeons. The timing of everything is bothersome and our movements are not fluid enough to allow for dodges. We have to stand still to hit the target. I don't think games HAVE to bring something new to the table to be fun and exciting. Not all titles need to have a revolutionary story or amazing mechanics. You do have to offer one thing, though. A fun experience. While this game's charisma is high, the base stats are very low and it quickly tires you.. I am unfortunately dropping this after only a few hours.
Wondorous Magic Academy Life? Guu Guu... + interesting writing of plot (like classic anime trope) + good localisation + chibified characters + lightweight dungeon crawler + action and tactical combat + funny conversation skits + interaction with things and changing options + classic troupe comedy + expressive chibi characters + monsters are well designed + dungeons are random + interesting mechanics in dungeons + cook, fish, synthesize, plant, grow fruits, punching walls + destroy school proberty + easy dungeon crawling - some missing QoL features - some inconsistence in artwork - much grind - lackluster sidequests - much to run and search Conclusion: As the game has much to explore on schoolground, where certain switches, pots etc. awaits you to be manipulated, thrown, destroy and otherwise. And while the comedy parts are fun. The game has some serious boring loop in dungeons, paired with quests where you will run for eternity in the huge dungeons. While the base story is pretty much entertaining, it unfolds pretty much always the same storyloop with longer gaps filled with boring quests. Characters and interactions are interesting, but when you go postgame, the grind just gets ten times higher. All in all its a comedic troupe story, with its funny moments and not so tragic story, with some pretty things to discover, but fails short in some critical aspects which are listed above. Could be better in my opinion, but its okayish. Score: 60 13/10 Gugu! 13/10 Eye Drops! 1337/10 Ima firin my lazor!

MADO MONOGATARI: Fia and the Wondrous Academy breathes new life into a long-running RPG franchise by combining classic dungeon exploration with an inviting school-life adventure. Developed by Idea Factory, Compile Heart, and STING, and published by Idea Factory International, the game introduces players to Fia, an energetic young girl whose dream is to become a respected mage. Her enrollment in a renowned academy of ancient magic serves as the starting point for an adventure filled with discovery, friendship, and magical challenges. Instead of relying on an overly serious narrative, the game embraces an uplifting tone that celebrates curiosity, personal growth, and the excitement of learning, making it an enjoyable experience for both longtime fans and newcomers. The academy is much more than a narrative setting, acting as the central hub that ties together nearly every gameplay system. As Fia progresses through her studies, players attend classes, interact with classmates and instructors, complete assignments, and gradually unlock new magical abilities. This educational structure gives the story a natural sense of progression, as every lesson and milestone reflects Fia's journey toward becoming a skilled sorcerer. The supporting cast is filled with colorful personalities who contribute humor, warmth, and occasional emotional moments, creating relationships that feel meaningful throughout the adventure. The game balances its lighthearted atmosphere with moments of mystery and danger, ensuring the story remains engaging without abandoning its optimistic spirit. Exploration plays a significant role, with players venturing into magical dungeons that contain dangerous monsters, hidden treasures, crafting materials, and numerous secrets. The labyrinths encourage careful exploration rather than rushing toward objectives, rewarding curiosity with valuable resources and equipment. Randomized elements within the dungeon layouts help keep expeditions fresh, while environmental variety ensures each location presents its own visual identity and gameplay challenges. The steady rhythm of returning to the academy after each expedition creates a satisfying gameplay loop that alternates between adventure, character interaction, and preparation for future missions. Combat shifts away from traditional turn-based mechanics in favor of fast-paced real-time battles. Fia uses an expanding collection of magical attacks and special abilities that allow players to experiment with different strategies while responding quickly to enemy movements. Battles are accessible enough for newcomers but still offer opportunities to develop effective combinations of spells, equipment, and tactical positioning. As players continue progressing, stronger enemies and more demanding encounters require greater mastery of the available abilities, making character growth feel rewarding. While the combat system occasionally lacks the complexity found in more action-focused RPGs, it remains consistently entertaining thanks to its responsive controls and satisfying magical effects. Character progression extends beyond leveling up through combat. The academy experience emphasizes learning, crafting, gathering resources, and improving magical knowledge through both practical exploration and academic activities. New spells, equipment upgrades, and various customization options provide flexibility in how players develop Fia's abilities. Crafting systems encourage collecting materials from dungeons, while other mechanics such as cooking, farming, and fishing offer useful bonuses and provide a pleasant break from combat-heavy gameplay. These additional activities reinforce the game's relaxed pacing and make the academy feel like a genuine place where students live, learn, and grow together. Presentation is one of the game's strongest qualities. The anime-inspired visual style perfectly complements its cheerful fantasy setting, featuring expressive character designs, colorful environments, and imaginative monsters. Spell animations are vibrant without becoming overwhelming, while the magical academy itself is filled with detail that reinforces its welcoming atmosphere. Although the graphical technology is not especially cutting-edge, the cohesive artistic direction gives the game a timeless charm. The soundtrack supports every aspect of the adventure with upbeat themes during daily school life, relaxing melodies for exploration, and energetic music during major battles. Japanese voice performances further enhance the personalities of the cast, making conversations feel lively and engaging. One of the game's greatest accomplishments is how successfully it blends multiple genres into a cohesive experience. It combines dungeon crawling, action RPG mechanics, life simulation elements, crafting, exploration, and relationship building without allowing any individual system to dominate the experience. Players who enjoy slower-paced role-playing games with meaningful world-building will likely appreciate the steady progression and emphasis on character development. Fans of classic Japanese RPGs will also recognize numerous references that pay tribute to the franchise's history while presenting its universe in a way that remains approachable for newcomers. The game is not entirely without flaws. Some dungeon designs become repetitive during lengthy sessions, and experienced RPG players may find certain systems relatively straightforward compared to more mechanically demanding titles. The relaxed pacing, frequent dialogue, and focus on academy life may also feel slow for players seeking nonstop action. Nevertheless, these shortcomings are outweighed by the game's charming cast, enjoyable progression systems, and consistently inviting atmosphere. MADO MONOGATARI: Fia and the Wondrous Academy succeeds by delivering an adventure built around optimism, magical discovery, and rewarding exploration. Rather than chasing modern RPG trends, it confidently embraces its own identity, offering a colorful world where learning magic is just as important as defeating monsters. Its combination of engaging dungeon crawling, enjoyable real-time combat, memorable characters, and relaxing life-simulation features results in an experience that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly wholesome. For players looking for a fantasy RPG that emphasizes adventure, friendship, and steady character growth, this is a highly enjoyable journey that captures the enduring appeal of the MADO MONOGATARI series. Rating: 7/10
First impression the gameplay is so cute chibi style dungeon action rpg battle, and the voice and movement of character is good, im still trying getting used to the interface especially when playing mage, have to combine using keyboard and mouse and the interface still need regular gameplay to play, but because its compatible using controler its easier to play with controler instead of keyboard and mouse. i like the colorful chibi character this game offer :D and cozy music too
