Completed the game in almost 4 hours. Fantastic 4 hours let me say. If I went back in time and knew this. I would buy it again. Chicken rules, f#"!k frogs
MACHICK, is just a sad game full of empty promises and false statements from the developer. There are many many instances of the developers saying they've added things or fixed bugs, and none of it has actually happened. Controller support, certain bug fixes, changes to achievements, etc, were all clearly stated as done by the developer in communication with the player base. There is respect for actually responding to the community but blatant lies are uncalled for. Let's say we put all that aside and focus on the game. This isn't exactly much of a roguelike as you are able to get more predetermined upgrades and items in a run, and there is little variation in each match nor variations in your wands or chickens. For the asking price, Machick 2 is leaps and bounds beyond this original game. Some of the programming and design is fairly well done as a starter project but the developers actions have lead me to be far harsher on it. Furthermore, the game has a very bad habit of hijacking your sound device and influencing your whole devices sound. I have never witnessed that in a game before but it was starting to hurt my head, certain enemies would overload the sound engine and mess with my other audio such as Spotify/YouTube. The wand system is seriously tedious too, especially with how you are expected to progress and the "Craft 100 Wands" achievement that they said they reworked... PROS: - Easy to understand - No need to think about your build CONS: - Incredibly buggy - Terrible developer communication - No variation in runs - No metaprogression - Hijacking of sound device Machick 2 is so much better, it is amazing what a single year difference could make.
It's not worth it. Simple as that. It's nothing but a bad Vampire Survivor clone that offers absolutely nothing. Essentially your gameplay loop is: Run 1: to understand the basics(which is everything, there is nothing to understand) Run 2-4: get to Desert Run 5: Do a 60min run in Desert, which is absurdely easy and no challenge Afterwards you buy everything. Then you realize you just "finished" the game with only 5-6 crafted wands; and the achievement requires 100. So now you start brainlessly crafting wands skipping through a horrible UI just for that. Then you do another 15 or so runs to get all Wand upgrades. Which is just afk'ing in the plains. The game offers no challenge, no progression, no variation. The translations are horrible so you end up guessing what upgrades do. The visual bugs are endless with things not spawning properly and just bugging out. The UI is clunky and breaks way too often.
ну и ладно... very simple and half baked survivors game. wand customizing mechanic is novel but doesn't save the bad balance and boredom this title provides. only buy on heavy sale if you want a tedious but easy 100%
Machick is a fun, simple and campy survivors-like/bullet heaven. The game plays like most bullet heavens but in this game your character's base weapon is a magic wand you can create and customize with unlockable crafting materials. There are several different chickens to play, maps with unique enemies and fun skills to choose from. If you like this genre of game its definitely worth your time and money. And if you find that you like this game you'll LOVE Machick 2!
Machick: 8.9h | 100% Achievements (24/24) Completed | Not Recommended
I came expecting a magical world with magic chickens. I left with 83 crafted wands I've never used, a mute button, and a profound understanding of what "lukewarm" means.
Achievement Breakdown
Grindy Achievements: Yes (~3). "Craft 20/50/100 Wands" are the worst, you'll craft around 10-15 organically, then spam random wands to complete the rest. Missable Achievements: No. Difficult Achievements: No. The game is really easy; the 100% is just boring.
What is Machick About?
Machick is a Vampire Survivors-style bullet heaven with a twist: instead of each character having a different weapon, you craft custom wands that change projectile types, damage stats, attack speed, and different buffs. You play as a magic chicken, survive timed waves, collect experience, and look at the screen questioning your life by the time you take into account it's your 6th play and you're doing the same thing over and over. Pros: - The wand crafting concept is genuinely neat - It's short enough that the 100% doesn't waste too much of your life Cons: - Rerolls frequently give you the exact same thing you just discarded - Everything is janky: animations, UI, and enemies all feel unfinished - No kill tracker per weapon/passive - Zero build variety; every run plays identically with the same items and upgrades - Audio is broken: overlapping sound effects, broken volume sliders, and no meaningful music - Nothing is explained: chest upgrades, chicken stats, special wand scaling, you have to guess everything (More about the pros and cons in the in-depth review part below)
Should You Buy This Game?
No. Not even on a deep sale. Machick isn't really bad, it's just meh. It has the ideas of a decent survivor clone but none of them actually work 100%. If you want a good survivor game with crafting, look elsewhere. The wand mechanic unfortunately doesn't carry this game alone. If you're here for easy achievements, then I guess you can buy it on sale since it doesn't really demand much of your brain.
In-Depth Review

Visuals
Machick blends pixel art with VFX effects, and it's.... alright. It's not ugly but I feel it doesn't have personality. It tries to give the enemies some fun designs but they are not really well portrayed. No chest opening animation, no proper enemy death animation, no level up animation. It's just bland. The weapon VFX are fine but nothing that will really catch your attention or make you feel powerful by looking at it.
Soundtrack
This is genuinely one of the worst audio experiences I've had in a survivor game. The sound effects are low-quality, the music is forgettable, and the mixing is broken: even if you drag the SFX slider to minimum, the spells and explosions still overpower the music. Worse, sounds stack on top of each other with no limit, creating a cacophony of chirps and blasts that makes the game actively unpleasant to listen to. I muted the entire game after my third run and never turned it back on.
The Game
Machick follows the standard survivor formula: pick a level, survive for 10-15 minutes, kill the final boss, collect your rewards. There are 5 levels, with the last one stretching for as long as you can last. After each run, you spend gold on wand upgrades and unlock new chickens, although the latter doesn't really add or change anything to your gameplay. The wand crafting system should be the star. You pick a wand type that fires different projectiles, select different types of wood with different damage, attack speed, and buffs, slot in up to 5 elemental cores with different effects, and select different elemental runes to increase your power even further. Early on, it's really interesting to check all the different combinations. But here's the main problem: once you make one really strong wand, you never need to craft a new one again. The game doesn't incentivize variety. There are no enemy resistances, no level gimmicks that force you to adapt, no reason to ever touch the crafting bench after hour two. Which brings us to the "Craft 20/50/100 Wands" achievement. During a natural playthrough, you'll craft maybe 15 to 20 wands. To hit 100, you will see yourself making a bunch of random wands just to immediately dump them and keep the cycle going until the achievement pops. At least it doesn't take much; I believe it took me around 10-15 minutes. The reroll system is completely useless. You already start with 10 rerolls for the weapons/passives and 10 rerolls for special items, which are counted separately. The game's purpose is to turn off your brain and just pick all the weapons. Is there even a need for rerolls? The developers also believe there's no need for it because you can reroll items up to 5 times in a row and get the same options on all these 5 times. The UI is another low point. You can't quickly check your items and passives mid-run, you have to pause, navigate to another menu, go back manually (esc doesn't work for some reason) and then go back to your gameplay. This makes me wonder if they did any playtesting for this game or if the people that tested just didn't care enough to check... which is weird considering this is a survival game. There's no kill track per weapon so you can't actually see which one is stronger. Chest upgrades exist, but the game never explains what leveling them does or how long their respawn cooldown is. You're just leveling it up for the cheap dopamine.
Completionist Tips
- Don't wait to craft 100 wands organically. Grind it as soon as you can by crafting the first wand, deleting it, and repeating. - Prioritize buying the upgrade that lets you increase the amount of cores in your wand. At the beginning you can use only 1 so try to get to 5 asap. Then buy all the cores as well, especially the double XP core. - Special wands are not worth using in my opinion. Get them just for the achievement. - Mute the game. Your ears will thank you.
Conclusion
Machick wants to be an easy, creative survival game, but while trying to be like that it loses the main core of a survival game which is thinking about your build and seeing how you're going to play each level to survive and get stronger. With mechanics not well explained, and characters and weapons feeling all the same. It just doesn't feel rewarding enough to keep going. Quite the opposite actually, if not for the achievements I would've dropped this way sooner. The genre lives and dies on "just one more run." Machick kills that feeling after your first hour. I hope Machick 2 fixes what this game couldn't, because the idea deserves better.
I'm a sucker for "bullet-heaven" games and I definitely enjoyed Machick, but it's not in the top tier of the genre. The good: - As is usually the case, it is satisfying to grow stronger and stronger during a run, eventually becoming a force of destruction laying waste to all in my path. - There is a decent variety of weapons with different effects, and each has an upgraded form you can access by powering it up enough after level-ups. - Decent variety of enemies and environments, although the latter are not particularly inspired. - The gimmick of creating your own magic wand is really clever and engaging. As you play through runs you unlock new wand materials and elemental runes to imbue them with benefits. You also unlock pieces of pre-made wands with their own unique characteristics. This leads to fun customization possibilities, such as having your wand cause your enemies to drop money earlier on and focusing more on damage output later on. The bad: - The game crashed on me several times (although usually within the first minute or so of a run). - Some of the sound effects are blaringly obnoxious, particular when they layer on top of each other. I ended up lowering the volume of the sound effects to zero. - While the graphics are decent, they aren't very well thought-out. For instance, one of the abilities you can use is a team of tiny chicks that follow you around. They are so small it's easy to lose track of them altogether and it's hard to see what they contribute. Dropped gold looks similar to scattered flowers. Enemies drop gold in little bunches, even if the value of said gold is only 1. - There is an obnoxious achievement that involves creating 100 wands. Playing the game organically means you will eventually be able to construct extremely powerful wands that are pretty much as good as you can get. But if you want that achievement (and I did) then you'll have to spend time just creating and destroying wands in a loop, never using any of them. There are plenty of better "bullet heaven" games, but Machick is decent fun that kept me engaged for a while. Recommended for those who can't get enough of the genre.
