Luto

I think the reason horror movies, literature and especially games appeal to people is to allow you to experience terrible, fearful or otherwise confronting things, but in a safe, controlled environment. Or to put it more succinctly, people just want to [i]feel something[/i], you know? At the very least, this is a big part of the draw for me - so it’s always fascinating to me when I play a horror title that isn’t remotely [i]scary[/i], but I still come away loving it. To be direct, Luto is not a scary game. But, Luto is raw, an exposed nerve, someone’s entire heart, grief, and trauma on display to be prodded at and dissected, their burden to bear, a thoughtful exercise in mental health. It is true psychological horror, and I have thought about it every day since I first finished it. In that way, it is still a raging success in my eyes. This is also largely due to the presentation on display here, which is frankly incredible. The house this story takes place in is damn near photorealistic, and the audio design is fantastic to boot; Even after realizing that I was never really ‘in danger’ (it isn’t that kind of game), I never once felt comfortable, owing to the atmosphere that this lends itself to. Without going into specifics for fear of spoilers, there are basically two stories being told here. There’s the surface-level one, and there’s… another one that needs to be very deliberately sought out. Both had me floored. This resulted in me playing through Luto [i]three times[/i], basically in a row, which is a feat that very few games have ever, or will ever, accomplish from me. Aside from my glowing recommendation, I would strongly suggest watching the trailer to see if this is for you. It somehow manages to convey everything the game is about, whilst spoiling absolutely nothing. If you like what you see, give this game a try. It is absolutely worth four(ish) hours of your time. I'm so mad at myself for not finding and playing this game sooner. One of the best horror games I've played, personally. And after fully beating it and playing the secret chapter, I have one thing to say. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, man. This game has done things I've never seen done before in others, especially with how its sound and visuals ♥♥♥♥ with you, and how it presents its story. Another thing I love about this game is how it doesn't hold your hand or help you in any way if you're stuck on something like most other games, you have to figure it out yourself and I love that. Especially with the secrets. If you are like me in any way and just now finding this game, give it a shot, you won't regret it. And prepare yourself for the ♥♥♥♥ you'll see. (including the secrets)

Going to preface this with 'play with a guide'. Many of the puzzles are nnnnnot the best and very obtuse. I really wish it had been more of a walking sim/story telling device. But the story is pretty good! It can be deeply moody and for those suffering with dark thoughts can hit home at times. It also had some very surprising visual styles that got me off guard. A interesting game, overall.
