If you like The Behemoth's games, you'll like this. The art style and humour definitely take cues from those guys and I'd say it's a resounding success on that front. The lumbermancer, the enemies (and the way they die), the lumber being manced, everything just oozes personality. In a good way, not the way things normally ooze, which is pretty gross. There's not much else to say that won't be repeating the "About This Game" section in a significantly less witty fashion, but I'm gonna say it anyway so that you're hopefully double-sure of what you're getting into. This is a small game. It's got four areas, each with different enemy types and a unique boss at the end, a shop where you can upgrade your lumbermancer, an endless level that (surprise) goes on forever, and allegedly a secret boss that I haven't found because it's a secret. That's really about it. You could see everything the game has to offer in maybe ~4 hours. Now, it'd be an enjoyable ~4 hours and only set you back $5, but this is a Sunday morning, play-while-you-drink-your-coffee game. You won't be playing this months from now. You'll probably finish it in the same day you buy it. That's something you should be fully aware of going in. All in all, I'd recommend it pretty highly. It's a great way to kill some time and the price is right for what you get. The game's got tonnes of charm and you can tell it was a labour of love. Plus, your money goes towards raising Roger's cholesterol when he inevitably uses it to buy pizza instead of paying his bills, so that's nice.
Nice concept, many flaws. CONS: - No graphic settings available, you can't set the screen resolution or play it fullscreen. You can maximize the window, but it'll keep the Windows menu bar in the bottom and the game's own window bar at the top. - It's buggy. The main character will freeze randomly or when it's killed. If it freezes randomly, it might come back to life if it takes damage from an enemy. If you were killed, you can't do anything else besides exiting the game (there's no way to go back to the main menu) - Now that we're talking about the main menu, I'm not sure if it qualifies to be a "menu". A proper, more clear menu with options, play, load, etc. would definitely be better - No co-op mode. At least having a local co-op mode would greatly improve the gameplay. It's funny (but difficult) to control both characters at the same time, and I guess that's part of the game concept. But having the two game modes (solo and co-op -option to play with someone else, each player controlling one of the characters) could be very funny. - No achievements, no trading cards. This game is begging for achievements, and with the cute artwork it would be very easy to create th trading cards and the required backgrounds/emoticons/badges. - Did I say ir's difficult? PROS: - Cute graphics, nice story and game concept - Simple enough to play from the beginning but also has quite a few things to improve the gameplay (upgrades) - It's difficult, but because it is challenging, it achieves its goal to keep you playing Conclusion: Nice, casual game with a great potential, but still has a lot of room for improvement. It's worth the price when on sale ($0.99-$1.49) but at a $4 retail price I would expect it to be less buggy and that the developer will continue to add features to the game (proper settings, a real menu, local co-op mode, achievements, cards, etc.). EDIT: I just saw the Kickstarter campaign (I'd have definitely backed it at the $4 tier) and now I'm also missing the "Digital book of game art, character designs, and personal secrets" and the "Digital soundtrack of game music" as DLC. 6/10
There is a bonus Fudge recipe along with a satisfying pizza. I would buy a pizza for a stranger again. 10/10 In all serious~ I backed this on Kickstarter and have no regrets. It's hilarious, sooo well made for a single person to make alone, and way harder then I thought it would be. So much so, I'll probably be addicted to this for some time now or until I can afford sexy hams. Can't wait for more games from him, his humor is amazing and it's a great buy to cure any kind of boredum or stress. *Yes there are a few bugs, but they are nothing major, that a quick save and a load back wouldn't fix. Every game has bugs, these are those most minor that I probably wouldn't have noticed if *Steam itself* hadn't crashed and shown me frozen game and sudden double adorable logs.
Hope you enjoyed that pizza Roger.
This looks like a cute little game on the surface. You control both the Lumbermancer and the logs he summons. There are 4 kinds - a shovel log which only purpose is to grow raw logs used as a consumable for summoning, a sword log that does melee damage, a torch log that’s used to rekindle Lumbermancer’s lantern (if it goes out, whole screen goes dark) but can do some damage as well, and an archer log that does ranged damage. What you need to do is to fill a sandwich shaped hole in main character’s tummy, by beating 4 areas in the woods, along with their respective bosses that drop ingredients for his lunch. Quirky and charming, right? Unfortunately under the hood it’s a complete mess. You control both the Lumbermancer and the log that is currently active. I would expect the logs to act as at least semi independent summons, but nope, it’s all manual. It’s hard enough to fight with one and avoid damage with the other, but to make the matters worse - the controls are not rebindable. Personally I would have swapped few things around to make it more comfortable if I could, but instead I was forced into someone else's clumsy preferences. Your characters move slowly and can block each others paths, which makes controlling them even more clunky. At first it’s not a problem, but then more and more enemies show up, so it’s hard to outmanoeuvre them and kill them in a timely fashion, thus you end up with a total ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on screen. The game does not feature any options, neither graphical ones, nor of any other kind. It runs in a window, which doesn’t even use system style & colour scheme, and default steam screenshot button opens some sort of dev tools or something. There is no steam overlay integration, but screenshotting is a force of habit for me, so I ended up with weird additional windows few times. The cherry on top is, that you can entirely circumvent the core game mechanic, to the point of playing entirely different game than the devs intended. There are several spells your character can learn in exchange for the souls of defeated creatures he gathers. One of the cheapest spells are a mermaid attacker thing, and a pig. You cast them by pressing directional buttons, for example right-down-up-down. I’m pretty sure that was supposed to make the player use them scarcely, but all it takes is to practice a spell few times, and then you can flood the screen with the mermaids, that actually move independently on their own (so much more convenient than logs) and mow down everything they touch. As there is no cost to using spells (as opposed to summoning logs), there is no reason not to do that. And in later stages, what you’re basically doing is fighting a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of enemies with a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of spawns of your own. The pig (2nd spell) when killed gives the Lumbermancer health. You can spawn the pig, then instantly kill it by spawning a mermaid on top of it, and there is no cost to that either, and no quota of how much health you can have, so you can make the protagonist basically immortal, and proceed to faceroll everything with mermaids. Aside from being forced to spawn the torch log for light from time to time, there is no need to play as intended, especially that it feels so clunky and inferior to spell spam. The core mechanics seemed like a nice idea, and maybe with some tweaks here and there, it could have been fun to use, but unfortunately this aspect of the game was totally botched up. I also experienced a recurring bug that made Lumbermancer stuck still not moving for no apparent reason. The arrow keys that control him worked (because I still could spawn spells with them), so the game accepted input, but he was just rooted in one spot. Once it happened at the boss, and after killing the boss I couldn’t go up and pick up the ingredient for sandwich :/ The little logs, while still mobile, weren’t coded to interact with it, so I had to repeat entire area. Oh, and if you save in the bugged state, you’re gonna load the exact same bugged state (saves are also manual btw). It won’t restart you fresh on the same stage or anything. After you collect all ingredients and let the Lumbermancer consume his sandwich, an endless mode unlocks, but I wasn’t interested in playing that anymore. Written after beating the game with 2.7 hours played.
Upgrades, naked code, dynamic gameplay, sandwich building, what else could you ask for in a game? Edit: Steam acheivements and trading cards that's what. Nothing like a false sense of accomplishment
Please buy this man's game. Please.
Best 4 dollar game on the Steam market. Add this game to your collection! :D
This game is excellent. Backed on Kickstarter and delieved like a day later. Roger you are a genius. The controls are kinda hard at first but when you actually get used to controlling two-three characters at the same time it becomes so fun I can't put it in words. The game is short, you'll probably finish it in a day or two. It is awesome, the music is good, the gameplay is awesome and the art style is so cute!!! Good job, best of indie right here.
