Played On: HTC Vive
Lumberjack VR is a log chopping challenge simulator, where hunks of wood are hurled at you for your chopping pleasure. The game features three main levels, and a large set of training levels as well. Your main goal is to earn the target point amounts by chopping wood, frying up chicken, batting away bombs, and doing tricks with your axe. As many other people have noted, the training levels are impossible. The point targets are insanely high, and unless you already know what you're doing you're going to end your gameplay early in frustration. This section should really be renamed to challenge levels instead, as they do not even show you how to handle your axe; that's where the first "real" level comes in handy. The game isn't as fun or easy as the trailer makes it out to be. Actually being able to chop the wood is a feat in itself, as it's always about a 50/50 chance that you'll actually cut the logs. You'll end up just hitting them away from you a lot of the time, even if you hit them with perfect precision. I tried both hitting with and against the grain, but it didn't seem to matter. There are also the more sturdy white logs that, when you actually get them to split, they just stick in your axe. To rack up major points, you need to hit bombs away from you and onto targets. Again, you'll need extreme precision to even hit these bombs in the right direction. Another way to make your points go higher is to do tricks with your axe, such as throwing it up in the air and catching it right before choppinga log. This mechanic is nearly impossible to master since most of the time the axe will just go flying out of your reach instead. In later levels, you'll need to throw your axe at balloon looking objects to pop them, but the axe spawns back to you at such a slow rate that you'll end up missing 1-2 logs in the process, so it's not even worth it. Lumberjack VR does have a great idea, but it needs a lot of refining. Since the title has been out since October 2017, and has received no updates despite given feedback, it's doubtable that any of these issues will be addressed. If at the very least the log chopping, the major gameplay point here, would be fixed, this title might actually be enjoyable. One positive note is that the graphics are good, and the game is optimized. Maybe I'm just a really bad lumberjack, but the amount of positive reviews are misleading. If you want to give it a shot, do so on sale.
Lumberjack VR is a free VR game. It worked on my HTC Vive and Index system, looked ok, played ok, sounded ok. There is a tutorial mode. You are using an Axe to chop wood thrown at you. You will get an arm workout, you can select which arm is your primary. Hard to make enough score, to pass the level. Has three training modes and the classic wave mode. Try this game, you might like it.
Lumberjack VR is a low poly 3D VR exclusive ripoff of Fruit Ninja from the mobile app stores, but with worse graphics, less depth, and worse gameplay. Gameplay consists, in a very similar vein to Fruit Ninja, which this is plagiarising, slicing various objects as they fly towards you. In this case, it's little firewood logs instead of the usual fruit. It's unclear why this is on Steam at all as it doesn't offer anything of interest to gamers. Mobile gamers already have Fruit Ninja, and that's more interesting than this is (as far as any mobile app could be of interest to a serious PC gamer). The low poly graphics seem phoned in and might as well be Unity asset flips. This seems to have been made a VR exclusive to prevent any comparison with non-VR 3D games, a comparison that this game would fail very badly at. Developers must learn that while VR is great, if the only thing that makes the game great is the VR, then the game isn't great at all. Imagine a game so bad that it was made VR exclusive, in the hopes that would prevent people playing it and comparing it to professionally developed games. While this is free, and that's a highly noble thing, this doesn't really have any value as a game, I couldn't recommend this to anyone. If this is the kind of game you really want to play, sell your PC and buy an iPhone so you can play Fruit Ninja.
I played this on the Oculus Rift with Touch Controllers and didn't find any issues. I had some fun with this game. However, a couple of things kept this from being a truly enjoyable experience. First of all, the UI could be a lot better. The tutorial also needs a lot of work. I was confused on how to cut wood the way it wanted me to to get maximum points (don't cut against the grain). Not sure how anyone can realistically get the points demanded on the tutorial. No tips or anything along the way, just trial and error. You're probably better off not doing the tutorial unless you want frustration. I only played 30 minutes because my arm was hurting me. Yeah, you will get tired quickly. Given the low price, I do recommend this game. It's quite the challenge, not just with quick reaction time required but with the physical exertion involved. Rate 5/10, would rate possibly higher with added content, improved gameplay
