Before you read, i played my first playthrough on Veteran Difficulty with the oldschool mob density modifier applied. The graphics are great as anyone will tell you, the level design is okay and the combat is also okay for the most part. What is especially noteworthy is the dev team behind it who provided free updates through a lengthy period, addressing lots of criticisms and stiching things up. That level of interaction with the playerbase is soarely lacking in the industry so it should be treasured wherever it's found. On to the bad though: Bosses do not feel great to fight, and certainly not the ones that are gank fights. Given how miserable the lock on system is and how it causes you strafe instead of dodge, it more than likely will ♥♥♥♥ you over than be of any help in such scenarios. Blocking is absolutely useless in most cases, i don't understand why it's even in the game when 95% of attacks from any mob will just break my guard and proceed to undo me in 1-2 hits. Not to mention how you' re still taking wither damage which i find to be much more punishing than just taking chip damage instead. I block an attack that takes half my HP as wither damage and then IMMEDIATELY afterwards a ranged enemy from across another continent shoots a furball my way and poof, the recovery window is gone. Ranged enemies are also another problem. Specifically their aggro range. If they are aware you exist, as in, heard your name being spoken in the public square, they will spend their entire lifes throwing projectiles across the entire world to hit you. And that's extra problematic when you don't even know who is shooting at you because from your POV they are not even visible. Fantastic. As i mentioned, i played with old school mob density which has received considerable backlash (and the devs actually patched it) but the reasoning was to gather EXP faster. But then i discovered enemies have area scaling. What that simply means is, enemies in a given area have hp and damage adjusted to what you' re expected to have at that point. But my experience is simply abysmal when i see the same literal bottom-tier trash mob that i needed 3 swings to kill in the beginning of the game, show up again with the same simplistic moveset and bottom-feeder status and it still needs 3 (or even more) swings to kill with upgraded weapons simply because it's scaled by the area. It would be understandable if it was a different mob with a more complex moveset so that kind of justifies it being "stronger" than a trash mob, but it's literally that same fodder enemy busting your balls. To put it plainly, you' re not getting stronger, you' re merely trying to catch up to the enemies getting stronger. The combat itself offers a few extra options aside from light / heavy attacks but suffers from them being too slow at time. Parrying enemy attacks has a recovery window long enough that you arguably have no time to strike between their combos unless their stance has been broken. Add to that that almost every mob has an initial attack speed far greater than you so unless you mind your spacing in every encounter, you re getting wrecked. And fighting more than 1 "serious" enemy is absolutely miserable considering the wither damage taken upon blocking, the impossibility of retaliating after successful deflections against a single enemy, let alone two, and the stellar gliding to force attacks to connect in a scenario where the attack wouldn't realistically reach you. To add to that, most of these complex enemies rarely are alone so it's unironically horrifying encountring them. The music is really forgettable. It's certainly there, but that's about it. Maybe you will remember one John William-esque track and that would be it. Umbral is a great idea, especially the EXP modifier while in it, but it feels like a drag traversing it when you have to do this slow lamp pull animation every time you have to interact with an embedded corspe, more so when it must be done sequentially to move a platform back and forth when you could have simply made it draw out a bridge and be done with it. Maybe i will give it another try in the future without the mob density since it's not what i expected but even without it, i am not left with a good enough feeling to power through it.
Don't let the online noise fool you. This is a genuinely great Souls-like. The soundtrack alone is phenomenal, elevating every boss fight and atmospheric descent into Umbral. The dual-realm mechanic is a clever, well-executed twist on the formula, and combat has real weight demanding you learn patterns and punishing impatience, exactly how a Souls-like should feel. Yes, it had launch issues, and CI Games has been steadily patching them. But judging it by day-one complaints instead of what it's become sells it short. Lords of the Fallen isn't a perfect game, and it never claimed to be, but it's an ambitious, atmospheric, and mechanically satisfying Souls-like with one of the best scores in the genre, a genuinely inventive dual-world system, and combat that rewards mastery. The complaints are real, but they're overshadowing a game that, warts and all, deserves to be played rather than dismissed.
Revamped. Overhauled. The Version 2.5 did it. Good game now. The gameplay is way better than what it was upon release in Fall 2023.
Should have played this game years ago one of the best souls like i've ever played second to Sekiro.
Когда‑то в 2023 году я купил себе на Плойку Lords of the Fallen.
Lords of the Fallen ... what can be said? I originally bought the game because I was looking for another Soulslike. My second requirement was: it had to be playable in co-op from the very beginning. And in that regard, Lords of the Fallen delivers. You can play through the entire game together without constantly being separated, interrupted, or forced back into your own world after every boss fight. My partner and I were able to experience the whole journey side by side, which made the game considerably more enjoyable. At least, whenever the co-op system decided to cooperate. Despite selecting the option that was supposed to carry over our shared progress, it did not always do so reliably. Eventually, this meant that the same person had to host and invite the other every single time, or we risked the game becoming confused about what we had already completed. At one point, I was kicked out because of a poor connection. The game then seemed personally offended by my attempt to rejoin the session and made returning to my partner far more complicated than it had any reason to be. So yes, the co-op is fantastic. Fortunately, the rest of the game gives you plenty of reasons to forgive it. Visually, Lords of the Fallen is beautiful. There are some genuinely impressive armor sets (Bloodborne *cough*), and the level design visuals are phenomenal. There are clear influences from Berserk and Elden Ring, but the game never feels like a simple imitation. It takes those inspirations and creates something with its own identity, atmosphere, and visual language. The boss fights are solid. Lords of the Fallen is not flawless. The co-op progression caused us several problems, and the connection issues occasionally tested our patience more effectively than some of the bosses did. But despite all of that, I had a genuinely great time with it. Recommend it? Yes. Preferably with a co-op partner, a reliable internet connection, and the understanding that one of you may have to become the permanent host of this doomed little pilgrimage. I am already looking forward to the second game.
