What is Lord Mayor?
Lord Mayor developed by John McCann and published by Bottlenose Bits, LLC. is a casual city building puzzle game. The object of the game is to deliver upon the goals that are set at the beginning of each level. Although it appears to be designed simply the amount of strategy and understanding of each of the building types is significant.
Gameplay
Gameplay consists of a playing grid-like playing board. Each level has its own grid. You can place one building in each vector. Each building type has a price in terms of monetary and resources required to build. Each round gives you a deadline to meet the requirements of each level. For example, the tutorial expects you to reach a population of 1000 with 5 happiness, 5 prosperity and 5 culture. Each building type has a different value. Failure occurs when either happiness, prosperity or culture hit rock bottom.
The Value Proposition
There are more better developed games on Steam that attempt to do the same thing. However, at the price point you're looking at a rock solid title gameplay wise. Therefore, when you factor in the value proposition - cost when compared to entertainment - the game is fairly priced. In fact, I would argue that the game is a bargain if you are into the genre.
A Recommendation
Such is the complexity of the different buildings and their individual values that I found it easier to play organizing a spreadsheet for the game. With a spreadsheet you will have a better idea of what buildings you need to build in order to accomplish each of the tasks that you are set at the beginning of each level.
Absent Developer/Publisher
It's always a little disappointing when developer/publishers release a game onto Steam and disappear into the oblivion. As of writing there are a total of five discussion threads on the game's board. None of them have received any official response. Several of them require attention. Certainly this may only be a $2 game but that doesn't excuse you from caring for your community. Consequently, I am more than a little disappointed that the developers appear to be absent and may have deserted their game.
Is it Steamified?
Lord Mayor is yet to be Steamified. It is a single-player game that lacks trading cards and Steam achievements. It also does not utilize the Steam leaderboard system. This is something that I would utilize in order to create a sense of competitiveness among the players. It'd be nice to be able to compare time played and in game days required to achieve the goals of each level. As a result I am disappointed the game is lacking in utilizing Steam to the best of its potential.
Verdict
Although I am disappointed in the absentee developer/publisher and the lack of Steamification if you are a fan of the genre the you can't ask for much more at this price point. Therefore, I somewhat reluctantly recommend this product. If the developers were to respond to their customers and potential player base, achievements and trading cards were added and leaderboards considered I would certainly recommend Lord Mayor a lot more firmly. Lord Mayor is a great casual game. The graphics are nice, the gameplay is very well balaced and fun, and the music is great. This game has a great proper and dapper feel to it, which I find very charming. As of the time of writing this review I have played the game for literally 20 minutes and I'm already hooked. The best part is that it's only 2 bucks! That's the same price as a bag of chips, and if this game were a bag of chips, it would be Pringles. I enjoy this game and plan on playing it in the future, and I'm honored to be the first person to review this game.
I cannot tell if I'm just bad at this game or I just don't understand what it's asking for. An actual tutorial would help. Will update this if I can figure it out, but that is dependant on me going back to it.
Not worth my time, the gameplay is the same, no variation.
Neat idea. I wouldn't buy it, even cheap, until game breaking bugs are fixed (at times, you enter the building select screen and when you leave it the screen fades but does not completely vanish, preventing you from building or doing anything at all). Also, because the game is real time, the building screen should pause time.
Its literally $2 for a fun and very strategic game! This game has unique gameplay mechanics with buildings helping either population, food, happiness, prosperity, and culture. Each building also hurts one of the 3 stats happiness, prosperity, and culture, but it hurts on stat less than it helps the other, making it possible to balance. There is an annoying bug where you dont actually have to win correctly, whenevery your stats are going up or down, if they happen to line up like you are supposed to even though they are still going down past what you need you still win. Making possible to cheat. I do love this game, dont let my game time fool you as I have played much longer offline. Very fun and for the price its 100% worth it! If you like the strategy genre its a must-have and if you dont try it anyways, you may be suprised! 9.4/10
Very simple game. Same stratey works with all maps - just go for required population first and then just spray some buildings to reach required conditions. Good enough for short breaks but consider playing something like "Concrete Jungle" instead.
Boring.
It's Two bucks. It is what it is. There are more interesting games for more or less. But hey ya gotta try it to like it. After getting out of the tutorial mission I realized it's just more of the same. Same as it ever was. Same as it ever was. The funniest part is schools lower happiness. Who knew being dumb was being happy? Anyway. have a nice day and thanks for reading. On a scale of 1 to 10 I give it a meh.
I can't pass the tutorial
