Loop8: Summer of Gods is a coming-of-age JRPG that blends slice-of-life daily routines with supernatural battles, set in a nostalgic 1980s rural town called Ashihara. The story follows Nini, a boy with a unique spiritual ability who arrives from a failed space colony to spend the summer on Earth. His task is to form bonds with the people around him while confronting demonic beings known as the Kegai. The narrative relies heavily on themes of memory, regret, and emotional connection, giving the game a reflective tone. Daily life forms the foundation of the experience. Players spend their days managing relationships, attending activities, and interacting with townspeople. Every choice affects character emotions, which in turn influence the difficulty and outcome of battles. The social system is central to the game’s identity, acting as both story delivery and mechanical progression. While the idea is strong, the execution can feel restrictive due to repeated dialogue and limited activity variety. Combat takes place in a separate “Kegai realm,” where emotional strength translates into combat effectiveness. Encounters are turn-based and revolve around morale, character mood, and interpersonal bonds rather than pure stats. This makes battles unpredictable and sometimes unintuitive, but also supports the game’s theme that emotional connection has real power. The system is conceptually distinct but can be frustrating because results don’t always align with player preparation. Time progression is strict. You only have one summer, and failure has real consequences—characters can die permanently, forcing players to restart loops. These narrative resets are intended to encourage experimentation and emotional investment, but repeated cycles can feel repetitive due to reused events and slow pacing. The loop structure works best if you treat each cycle as an opportunity to refine your strategy and deepen relationships. Atmosphere is one of the game’s strongest elements. Ashihara feels warm, serene, and nostalgic, with soft lighting, gentle animations, and detailed environmental design. The soundtrack emphasizes calm summer days and emotional scenes, supporting the mood even when gameplay falters. The presentation aims for a peaceful, reflective experience rather than high-intensity action. Despite its ambition, the game struggles with pacing and mechanical depth. Limited freedom in daily interactions, repeated scenes, occasional AI quirks in battle, and slow progression can blunt its emotional impact. The core systems rely heavily on interpersonal dynamics, but the narrative tools supporting those dynamics sometimes lack nuance, making certain character arcs feel underdeveloped. Overall, Loop8: Summer of Gods is a thoughtful but uneven JRPG built on emotion-driven mechanics and a nostalgic setting. It succeeds in atmosphere, themes, and character concepts, offering a gentle and introspective experience. Its shortcomings in repetition and combat clarity prevent it from reaching its full potential, but players who appreciate slower, narrative-driven games with unique structural ideas may find it a compelling and memorable summer.
For a game with time travel that requires you to loop multiple times, the game needed proper skip dialogue options, there is a fast forward but it is still slow, you can skip some cutscene but not ALL of them. Going through the same dialogue over and over is tiring. Also, the player character moves so damn slow. He does a slow jog sort of animation that feels as if it's running at 15fps. It feels like it takes forever to get to point A to point B. I have played and enjoyed mediocre games before, but in this game it's the lack of QOL and some strange in game decisions that really make a mediocre game feel like and awful experience, it feels like torture. Why the devs could not go back and patch in some QOL after launch, I have no idea. It seems they gave up before they even began. The game has very nice art and some good music but all of that is wasted.
This game is worth 5 dollars. The game feels like a mod of another type of game with half implemented ideas throughout. It's weird to play and not easy to figure out. The translations are poor at times and that does not help a less than clear game design. I think a game like this needs a lot more development time to really be something that works. That said, I think it's a fine game to sink a few days into if you're just looking to veg a bit and try to figure out what's happening. Some of it is really quite clever in unexpected ways.
i still think about how bad this game was
