This game is a masterwork for like 95% of its runtime and then for the other 5% it forgets what a puzzle is
This game feels like getting a lobotomy and then snorting 10 lines of coke. Its great
Easily the most infuriating puzzle game I played. I don't have problems with being lost in a maze, I really liked Antichamber and its clear that this game wants to be like it, however I just can't with the "puzzles". The puzzles in this game require a ton - and I really mean a ton - of pure trial and error to figure out how the mechanics work. For every individual color there are at least three different rules, so you're going to be guessing a ton. You will pick up on patterns by accident and consider them the "rule" and then be confused why does it suddenly not work elsewhere, because you picked up on the wrong pattern and the real rule is completely different. This game has exactly zero accessibility options, and the "guided" setting does not seem to do anything. I had to go read up on how exactly the rules work, and even then I still couldn't understand some of the answers. I am an insane puzzle game fan, especially of the harder ones, but if I have to actively guess just so I have a chance at making progress, I refuse to call this game a puzzle game.

This is the worst 10/10 ever
This has to be the most evil, twisted, and sickening game I have ever played. But it is so good. I cannot stop wanting to go back to try and shatter its pride, only to come back in tears a few hours later because I have no idea what the word 'chimerical' means. This is the best game you could wish on your worst enemies, a punch to the face to wake them to the reality our unending language can and will outlast any of our chosen uses for it. Lingo will bring you to the brink and then some. You will learn of colours you never knew existed,
are you smart? not anymore. this game messes with your head until you are driven to insanity. 10/10 would mindbreak again.
I was thinking I was almost done with L2 but nope, just encounter the
Infinite Staircase
and realised I'm far from done, haha it was such a shock. Anyways, from Level1 to Level2 to custom-made levels, you can spend hundreds of hours in this beautifully made word-puzzle game. It's one of the must-play puzzle games for me, and probably my favorite puzzle game too.

this game is a cruel, utterly chaotic mess, yet has some of the most satisfying word puzzles ever. it also has a few of the worst! looks and runs like ♥♥♥♥ but i don't even care because the fundamentals are so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ good. half the time you're having a lobotomy and the other is like you're on that brain drug from 'LUCY'. make sure to get comfortable with US spelling and pronunciation because that tripped me up a lot. i recommend it if you hate yourself
Where to even begin... Lingo is a rule discovery game first and foremost. If you like other games in the subgenre (like The Witness) then you will probably enjoy at least the first 20 hours of this game. But Lingo is also what I would lovingly call a "bottomless pit" game. It's a game that's hiding so much under the surface that it's hard to convey exactly what you're getting yourself into. Steam has a bundle called "Hidden Depths" which includes games like Fez, TUNIC, Outer Wilds... I can safely say that Lingo would fit right alongside the bunch. If you have played any of those games, then you know what I'm talking about. This is where the rest of my playtime comes from, which says a lot... However, Lingo is pretty rough around the edges and a little hard to recommend to everyone. If this sounds up your alley, keep the following in mind: - The game is very non-Euclidean. VERY. It starts mild enough, but this becomes borderline nightmarish later. - You need a decent grasp of the English language (specifically North American spelling/dialect) to really get this game, as it is a language game. Most of the puzzles aren't too bad. Some more challenging (mostly optional) puzzles will tempt you to break out a dictionary or thesaurus. - This is a notepad game. If you aren't taking notes, you will regret it. Most importantly, sometimes (actually very often the deeper you go) Lingo will ask you to take a leap of faith. I'd like to say that 90% of the time there's a way to use logic to arrive at the solution, but other times you will be asked to make a blind guess, so to speak. Many of the games most challenging and interesting areas lie behind some serious lateral thinking. This is a "rule discovery" game, so leaps of faith are warranted... but there are some mighty big jumps in there sometimes. Your mileage may vary; this is by far the most universally frustrating aspect of this game.
Holy pumpkins...
But with all of that said... there's something deeply personal about this game. You can tell how much thought and love went into crafting it, even though sometimes it's a jumbled mess. If you're willing to put in the time to try and understand what's going on here, there's a very rewarding experience waiting for you. I will not forget Lingo for a very long time. ...but if that sounds like too much of a pain to you... maybe skip this one and go straight to Lingo 2. I haven't finished it yet, but it's more polished around the edges. You can always come back to Lingo 1 another time.
