Really fun game. A Symmetric Escape is a not too long, not too difficult first person game full of puzzles. It is structured somewhat similarly to The Witness, in that there is one main puzzle type, and where sometimes solving a puzzle (or a series of puzzles) opens up a new path leading to more puzzles. In A Symmetric Escape, the main puzzle type is to fill in colors in a grid according to some rules of symmetry which are specified per puzzle, which would be the analog of "draw a line in a grid" in the Witness. However, in A Symmetric Escape (unlike The Witness), it's pretty easy to figure out what the rules are, and the total set of rules (and pretty much everything else about the game) is vastly smaller in scope. Thrown in are a few twists in the form of a handful of "environmental" puzzles that extend beyond just the one grid you're looking at. The art, music and object modelling are very basic as well, but perfectly adequate for what this games aims to achieve. This game does not pretend to be building a detailed world for you to be immersed in, and instead just focusses on the puzzles. The puzzles are fun. They start out very simple to act as tutorial puzzles to teach you the rules, and then get more complicated. I didn't find any of the core (where everything you need to solve the puzzle is right in front of you on one grid) puzzles very difficult although a handful took a few minutes. The "environmental" puzzles were a little bit more challenging as well as more satisfying to figure out, but still easy once you figure out the parts involved. I feel the game was just the right length. Had it been much longer without new puzzle variations, I think it would start wearing out it's welcome. The game autosaves whenever you exit. I didn't encounter any bugs. Overall. I highly recommend A Symmetric Escape.
Cool retro art style and really tough unique puzzles. Progression is nice, slowly introduced to the mechanics and then later on have to really think on it to figure out things. if you're up to that its a great puzzle game
its a good game but i dont have the patience to get stuck on one puzzle also how the hell does the middle puzzle thats 4 at once work i dont even know how it ends because 1 puzzle is impossible for me and one i just dont understand
A lovely puzzle game! I played the game jam version and really loved it. The steam version adds some new types of challenges as well as bonus puzzles. The game is short, but a joy to play through. The difficulty curve is really well done and I love the way different mechanics are introduced and then come together. One of the big strengths of this game is the openness. Much like The Witness, many paths open up, allowing you to move to different challenges as you find yourself stuck. Often times I would get stuck on a puzzle, walk away and solve some different puzzles, and then come back to complete the original challenge. The atmosphere is very calm but a little eerie. Don't let the clock in the center room scare you. It is recording your time, not limiting you. The game ran very smoothly on my machine, and I did not encounter any game play bugs. I was able to complete 100% of the puzzles. I look forward to more from this developer in the future.
Simple and straightforward, fun mechanics, challenging but fair puzzles, doesn't overstay it's welcome. Took me about three hours to complete every puzzle while sometimes being distracted by stuff on the second monitor.
A short and sweet puzzle game. Keeps throwing new curve balls at you right up until the final minute. Definitely requires a little bit of lateral thinking and the core puzzle that it builds on is solid.
Clever games curator review: 7/10 Following very much the approach set out by The Witness, this game takes one simple 2D puzzle type, and teaches you how to play, entirely by example. Then it sets you loose to solve a wide range of variants, in a 3D world. Eventually the 3D world also takes on aspects of the 2D puzzle. The puzzle involves coloring in a grid so that different color groups have particular types of symmetry (eg bilateral, rotational, mirror, etc). The middle part of this game is by far the most enjoyable. At that point you’ve figured out the core mechanics, and are just running around figuring out how to solve puzzles by applying them in different ways, occasionally discovering new mechanics that are minor extensions. If the whole game had been like this it would be a 9 out of 10. The game is far rougher at first, where there aren’t really enough teaching examples to get a really solid grip on what the rule set is. And I personally feel the end game goes way off the rails introducing some radical variations in the rules that are hard to guess, non-intuitive, and often feel like buggy UI, although in retrospect it is not. This part of the game is a 5 out of 10, if I’m generous. I suspect this is where being an indie developer really hurts, because a little bit of outside play testing probably would have revealed the unevenness of the experience. That said, not everyone seems to be annoyed by the beginning and end game; maybe I was just having a bad day. In any case the end game is easier now if you want it to be since there’s a guide and several posts to the forum that explain what’s going on. Obviously, it’s far from ideal if you have to resort to such sources in order to be able to finish the game, but maybe you won’t. For those who care about graphics or storyline, don’t. Although personally I was somewhat amused by the fact that I was playing 1992’s Wolfenstein 3D, but with puzzles instead of guns. For real puzzle fans I don’t think these missing aspects of the game should hold it back at all. The controls were good: I found it very pleasant to play with a standard controller.
A fun and challenging puzzle game so far! Keeping my brain active!
This is a nice brain teaser of a game! It's very fun to try and define the rules the games asks of you, without overloading you on them. This game is 100% focused on puzzles, without the extra unnecessary information or other stimuli.... so you know what you can interact with It at all times. It doesn't hold your hand too much, and it's very possible to solve without hints or a walkthrough. Perfect length too I felt. I thought I was pretty clever getting out in 3 hours, but the game lists other players' completion times at the end and I was quickly humbled :D Great time! The rotating puzzles burned my brain though !
