A lunar odyssey so lifeless it makes vacuum look sociable.
Lifeless Moon opens by doing the one thing you never do to your target audience: it forces an unskippable intro down your throat. Immediate goodwill: deleted. And for a game with “Moon” in the title, it’s impressively uninterested in the whole landing business - you climb into a Saturn V only to get casually beamed onto the surface. So why the rocket? Set dressing? A museum exhibit you accidentally sat in? Once you’re on the Moon, physics takes a sharp left into “cinematic guesswork.” Gravity isn’t anything like 1/6th - you move and jump basically Earthlike, except everything looks like it’s been dipped in syrup for that dramatic slo-mo vibe. It’s not moonbound wonder; it’s the sensation of jogging through a dream where your legs are made of damp towels. Then come the “tasks,” which is a generous term for “walking until the game decides you’ve suffered enough.” It’s so dull that even the developer seems to have lost faith and installs a speed-up plate: step on it and you get involuntarily fast-forwarded like a VHS tape someone is spitefully scanning through, until the game arbitrarily lets you crawl again. No map, no zoom, and no clarity - just the delightful meta-challenge of locating the next invisible “sweet spot” where progress is permitted. Not a simulator, really. More a bad dream with checkpoints. Chapter 2 introduces a “city,” in the same way a single crouton is a “salad.” It’s basically a gated, deserted block with a Fallout-ish diner in the middle, and visuals that peak somewhere around Fallout 3 - which, charming as it was, came out in 2008. Then you enter a building and the game switches to first-person, where your reward is paralysis: you can rotate and shuffle on the spot while you “scan” everything until a HUD ring turns green - a mechanic the game leaves you to discover like a cruel little party trick. What Lifeless Moon isn’t: a walking sim (walking implies purpose), even a mediocre puzzle game, interesting, worth its price, or better than its predecessor. If you enjoyed Lifeless Planet and wished it had less life, fewer ideas, and more time spent searching for the exact pixel the game deems acceptable - congratulations, your spacecraft has landed. Or beamed. Or whatever this was supposed to be.
The graphics are better than the first game (which is to be expected), other than that? It is lackluster in comparison. The puzzles are incredibly simple, there is no risk of death at all whereas the first game had several dangers, the gameplay itself was even shorter than the already short playthrough of the first title. A bit disappointed with this one.
This is one of my favorite games. I originally played Lifeless Planet on GOG and when I saw both came on sale here on steam I thought I should get them. I am glad I did this is just a fun game and so is the other one. It is a bit hard but not too hard. a lot of exploring to do and a lot to do. Hope this company makes more of these a lot more.
I quite liked this one, even more so than the first game. This time around the story is tighter, the maps more linear. While the platforming is much the same as the first game, there is a-lot less of it. While pretty old school graphics wise it still manages to display some visually striking scenes. I got this together in a bundle with the devs first game lifeless planet, and i enjoyed them both, but i would wait for a sale, they are a tad overpriced IMHO. Ran fine, no crashes.
