Great metroidvania, it doesn't hold your hand in the least, the difficulty is very challenging so if your looking for a decent non linear metroidvania and want s decent challenge then this is the game for you.
Good game. Only complaint is that more effort should of been put into the map. Some areas look identical.
A very nice little Metroidvania that ticks all the marks of the genre. Good combat, controls and atmosphere. The only real quibble I have with it is that the font colors are a bit too hard to read and tend to blend into the background.
I just finished playing this game on its Normal mode, and I had a freaking blast! I love Life On Mars! It is a simple Metroidvania style game with a lot of character to it. First off I love that you can change the filter on the screen to be in either "Old TV Mode" which just adds scan lines, or turn it off for a cleaner image. I used both, Old TV for when I was on my tv playing and turned it off on my monitor to see easier. The fact that you can hook up a controller is very nice, because with a side scroller like this it just feels better to play using a controller. And it handles very well, no moshy-ness in the respond time with the character. Thirdly, the enemies are thrown at you in a fun and fair way, not to difficult right away. But challenging as the game goes on. And lastly, the story really sucked me in. It starts out real standard "welcome to Mars" kind of way. But it took a couple turns along the way that I didn't see coming. Sam (the main character) is also a fun character to read. I could image what kind of person and what he probably sounds like by the way his lines are written. All in all, AN AMAZING GAME!! Just a little short, but that fit what I wanted at the time. 10/10 for "Life on Mars" easily!
If you love old-school style games like me, you'll love this. The game really captures the feeling of an early 90's game (complete with grinding). It has a few rough edges, like the impossibility of changing the scanline effect or the controls once you start the game, but overall it is very fun.
It's a solid metroidvania, worth grabbing. The difficulty of avoiding some hits may get you down at first. It gets better. Some of them can be pretty cheap. And the first time you blow yourself up with friendly fire you might do some yelling :) You can use the same effect to your advantage on enemies and get them to blow themselves/each other up as well. Early in some of the jumps are a bit annoying but that frustration disappears with your first upgrade item, and its better than most platformers about them after that despite the odd failure to detect a "1st jump" (as part of your double jump) if you jump to close to the edge of a ledge - fortunately, you can make said jumps without the extra distance from using the edge of the platform. It's not flawless (what game is?), but its good. Overall feels very Metroid NES+Aliens movie, and that's a good thing.
It's a well polished game IMHO unlike I saw in the comments. Not sure what controller he's using. Tight controls lovely environments with smooth animation not regularly found anymore. The multi layered parallax background and forground scroll smoothly as well. It's not a long game but that's okay for me. It wasn't to difficult as long as you grinded a little to aquire better weapon upgrades. you get a flame thrower, a blaster, and bombs as well as suit upgrades for speed and higher jumps. Just buy it if you like classic Metroid-Vania style game play. It's worth the few bucks.
This remake was very well done, deepening some art and design features that could not be worked so well in the MSX2 Era. It now has a 32bits shapé. The blasts and blast colliders were done well. The soundtrack on the selection screen is also neat, with impactful sound effects. All of this takes us to an atmosphere of space horror, as if it were a more adult Metroid-like. Nowadays the we could consider that remake an indie ititiative.
