An interesting idea, a good game and a total waste of your money.
How could I possibly write a review after playing the game only for one hour? Simple: I've beaten the singleplayer portion of the game. The game itself is fun and it would be a blast if it only had more singleplayer enemies and missions. It's supposed to be a multiplayer title but did they really think the game will be a commercial success selling hundreds of thousands of copies? Did they expect hundreds of people playing this title 24/7? Singleplayer There's no story. You play against four enemies. The first enemy has four fairly easy tutorial missions. The second and third enemies only have two missions and the third enemy has 3 missions. It took me exactly 60 minutes to play through the game. It's possible to get lucky and finish a mission in one turn. Chances are that your playthrough won't be even one full hour. How does it play? Each match starts with an empty "board". You're given your fleet: fighters, carriers etc. Each unit has a certain amount of hitpoints and can move a certain amount of tiles. You start the match by placing your units on the "board" as you see fit and the game starts. You make the first move. The goal of the game is not to destroy the entire fleet the enemy has. You only have to destroy the main ship...The queen...The general of whatever you'd like to call it. It only has one hitpoint so everything can destroy it. The enemy can also win the match by simply destroying your "queen" without even touching the rest of your fleet. It makes for a fun turn-based strategy game. Multiplayer Plays just like the singleplayer campaign but against real people. Now the cool thing is that the matches keep going even after you've closed the game. You make your turn, close the game, go to work, run the game, see what the enemy did and make your next turn. All you got to do now is wait for the enemy to return and make his/her turn. The matches can be played live as well but it's cool to have such a feature. However the game doesn't have a steady amount of players. This issue is kind of fixed by allowing you to exit the game and return to your match later on but this also means that one single match could take forever and you end up playing the game in short 2-5 minute sessions. These short sessions make you ask the question: Was it worth the money? Conclusion A very fun and original game. However it is in serious need of more singleplayer content. The backround music is nice, the idea behind the game is interesting and unique and it plays like a charm. However the big question floats about this title: Is it really worth the money? Only YOU can answer this question tho. The singleplayer is short but it could be a fun game with a friend. If you don't have a friend who would do skirmish battles with you then, in my humble opinion, this title is a waste of money. There's barely any singleplayer content and live multiplayer matches are as rare as peaceful british football fans. I would recommend giving this title a go on a sale tho.
Stratego in space. If you are not ok with Stratego, it probably isn't the game for you. The UI feels... compatible with mobile. This is a turn off for some. The mobile UI compatibility didn't feel like a significant hinderance in this game (it has in others). Don't go into this expecting an experience that is optimized for desktop. The gameplay itself has skirmish, which is your classic Strategoesque environment. There is also a campaign which allows for unlocking additional opponents. The campaign has asymmetry to the pieces. There are variations on the power scale compared to the more "pure" numerical environment of Stratego. There is a piece that always wins if it attacks, and always loses if it is attacked. There are fighters - which you can move two per turn and have two attack the same spot. There are mines - which behave like mines... except for the bit that light fighters aren't blown up by them. The board placement area has more options than the number of ships - some mobility there. The black holes (those circle things in the center) allow for slingshot movement, which can give fighters (with lots of movement) some sometimes surprising movement options. I'm not overly impressed with the AI, but its not awful. There's the "I sent that fighter down the outside edge to scout out that ship and... oh, I won." Incidentally, there is an achievement for that. All in all, its what I expected and would be on the "I'll play it again" side of things. I got it on a 25% off sale and that felt about right. If you're on the fence, wait for a bigger sale or wait to see if it comes out for mobile at a lower price point.
Duration - 1 hour Completed 13 of 14 achievements. I haven't completed the achievement to complete an online private game and I never will. This is a Stratego style game with some variations. The fighters are a nice touch (2 and 3 strength units) which can combine to take out the capital ships. Campaign is quite short and is basically 1 long tutorial which can be played in under an hour. Not much more to this unless you want to play multi-player as the AI is quite weak. At the end of the day, I have to hit not recommended.
Doomstar is a nice, space-themed, turn-based casual strategy game with easy graphics and pleasing music, from a friendly dev. This game was made for pvp, the whole campaing is just a long tutorial, so buy it only if you plan to play it with friends or community members. The mechanics are partly close to chess - move with one unit at a time on a grid, fleets come out face to face - but it has significant luck factor too. If the opponents dont hesitate too much, a battle isnt longer than 1/2-1 hour, but Doomstar supports Steam Turn Notifications therefore you are able to play it considered and slow.
I didn't knew exactly what to see when playing this game the first time, but like some other people already mentioned it here, it looks kinda like stratego, and stratego is nice https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGpZtoVyhzg
The game features a small campaign full of unbalanced missions (the AI is given powerful ships in greater quantities), more fair skirmishes against the AI, and asynchronous online multiplayer. Doomstar incorporates the basic game rules of the classic board game Stratego (simple attack ratings, unknown ship attributes until attacked, highest ship number wins) with a reduced number of units for faster gameplay. The goal is to destroy the enemy command ship with any vessel. Mines don’t move but destroy everything except light fighters and carriers. Fighters can move as many spaces as they want across the board. Battle cruisers and dreadnoughts are the most powerful units on the board. Black holes allow units to move multiple spaces in a single turn, and two set of fighters can attack the same enemy in the same turn. The AI is decent enough at the game to provide a good challenge, although online multiplayer is where the true action lies. Fans of Stratego will enjoy Doomstar, but the feature set is fairly basic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2g-LLOw4l30
KWAAA?!!
I wish I had played the game as soon as I had purchased it, then I could have requested a refund. The game is more puzzle solving, than stategy. My current "mission" is to find the command ship before they find mine (every mission) My forces 4 2x fightere, 4 3x fighters, both can move unlimited in a straight line (E,S,N,W) 4 4x and my command ship can move 1 space (E,S,N,W) vs 2 5X can move 3 spaces while changing directions 2 6X can move 3 spaces while changing directions at least one (I think there are 2) mine field which destroys any ship other than a 2X fighter (if the 2X fighter attacks a mine field, it moves past the field to attach what ever is beyond the field) After a figher moves, you may move a second fighter The only way to defeat the 5X is to attack with 2X and 3X (mutual destruction) or 3X and 3X (victory) The only way to defeat the 6X is to attack with 3X and 3X (mutual destruction) You will need to lead with your 4X ships (cannon fodder) to set up the fighters and hope the enemy attacks with the 5X ships first or hope your probes with the 2X fighters can find their command ship. If you love watching the opponent beat you with moves your ships of the same class can't perfprm, this is the game for you. I have one more card drop before uninstalling this geme.
