Normies dont understand space hulk. They think Space Hulk is a real-time tactics game. Space Hulk is a survival horror game. The horror of bolters jamming, the horror of assault cannons exploding, the horror of flamers blocking your own path forward, the horror of the failing rearguard and hearing your squadmate one tile behind you being devoured alive on the vox, the horror of skittering feet and genestealers surrounding the Emp's finest, armed and armored with the Imperium's most priceless armaments and still failing in the face of rending teeth and claws, the horror of having +2 to your melee rolls with the thunder hammer and storm shield and still rolling 1s, the horror of a broodlord walking across flamed tiles and one-shotting your rune-priest who wasted all his psi points axing genestealers. This version is the closest rendition of the beloved board game from the 90s. Some people don't enjoy how hard the game is or the fact that they cant scum save and load immediately without having to go back to the menu first. But those are weaklings who lack true courage. This is quintessential sci-fi fantasy storytelling - you and the boys strapping yourselves into claustrophobic boarding torpedoes and ramming face first and ballz deep into a massive graveyard of dead ships chock full of filthy aliens. Your mission is almost always suicidal and the casualty rate will most assuredly be 70+%. But if not you, veteran space marine champion of the First Company, then who else to defend mankind against the encroaching dark? And with that damned knowledge and armed with nothing but bolter, blade and faith you find yourself once again in the stygian dark of an ancient wreck teeming with mankind's most horrid enemy.
Take turns playing whack a mole with a bunch of fleshy abominations full of entropic dystopic intentions.
Still my go to Space Hulk game. Find myself coming back to it repeatedly. I will get that last 40,000 kills achievement one day...
Probably the best and most faithful reproduction of the boardgame. The AI is a little predictable, insomuch it is easy to predict its lines of attack - then again so was the boardgame - but this still provides that growing air of desperation as the "stealers" close in. It is unforgiving, especially at higher levels and you have to constantly think of your positioning to cover your terminators Highly recommended
I love Space Hulk. I've owned like 5 or 6 editions of the game. I want to give this a great review and invite lots of folks to try it out. I can't say it's for everyone and if you're not into the whole vibe of the gameplay (I'm not talking the aesthetics - you probably know if you like the 40k theme already) it's not apologizing for itself. The re-release includes DLC for free, which is great. But it's not online multiplayer. That alone is a deal breaker, in my opinion. If you're a solo boardgamer and interested, keep an eye out for a sale.
You've got to be a mega chad to succeed in this game. Just by installing it you grow an extra pair of balls. Oh wait that might be corruption...
The RNG in this game so ridiculous that it ruins all the fun. Constant weapon malfunctions, even on the first shot and specialized melee characters dying on the first strike. There so many WH40K tactical games these days; save yourself the frustration. In case you already own the game, you can save mid-term. Use this over and over to correct the RNG.
classic space hulk board game. for old gamers who had to play board games before PC games this is a classic GW board game that back in the day allowed people to get into tabletop affordable, turning it into a addictive unaffordable hobby(LOL)! the money, minitures and painting. GW would put out the board game sporadic to the point that today the boardgame is a treasure if you can find it! the game sales out before it is even released basically treated how GPU's are treated today. this PC rendition is as close to the boardgame you can get, i am glad they were able to get it for 4k. excellent game for your on the go steam deck.
Welcome back, space hulk o/
*Space Hulk (Classic)*, developed by Full Control Studios and published by SNEG, is a digital adaptation that stays remarkably loyal to its tabletop origins, for better and for worse. Set within the oppressive, war-scarred universe of Warhammer 40,000, the game places players in command of elite Space Marine Terminators as they cautiously advance through derelict space hulks—vast, drifting wrecks filled with lurking Genestealers. It is a game built on tension and restraint, where every decision carries weight and survival depends on patience more than aggression. The core gameplay revolves around turn-based tactical movement governed by strict action points, forcing players to think several steps ahead before committing to even the smallest maneuver. Terminators are powerful but slow, requiring careful positioning and coordinated overwatch to hold narrow corridors against fast-moving enemies. The Genestealers, by contrast, are fragile at a distance but devastating in close quarters, creating a constant sense of imbalance that drives the game’s tension. This asymmetrical design ensures that every encounter feels like a high-risk calculation, where a single mistake—turning the wrong way, mismanaging a reload, or leaving a blind spot—can lead to immediate and irreversible consequences. What stands out most is the deliberate pacing. Missions unfold slowly, often feeling like a careful crawl through hostile territory rather than a traditional strategy experience. Players spend a significant amount of time setting up defensive lines, managing limited resources, and anticipating enemy approaches rather than engaging in frequent firefights. This measured approach captures the essence of the original board game, translating its suspense into a digital format. The inclusion of random command points adds a subtle layer of unpredictability, occasionally allowing players to extend their turn, but never enough to rely on as a consistent advantage. However, this strict adherence to its source material also exposes the game’s limitations. Compared to modern tactical titles, the range of strategic options can feel narrow, and mission objectives rarely evolve beyond established patterns. While the core loop remains engaging for a time, the lack of variety can lead to repetition, especially during longer sessions. The game does not attempt to expand or reinterpret its foundation in meaningful ways, instead choosing to preserve the original experience almost intact. For longtime fans, this faithfulness is a strength; for others, it may feel like a missed opportunity for innovation. The presentation reinforces the grim atmosphere effectively, with dark, industrial environments that evoke a sense of isolation and constant threat. The visual design aligns well with the Warhammer 40K aesthetic, emphasizing heavy armor, dimly lit corridors, and oppressive architecture. At the same time, the technical execution is uneven. Animations can feel stiff, environments occasionally lack detail, and the overall polish does not quite meet modern standards. These shortcomings do not completely break immersion, but they do remind players that the game is more focused on recreating a classic experience than delivering a cutting-edge one. Artificial intelligence and overall gameplay flow further highlight this duality. Enemy behavior can become predictable after extended play, reducing the sense of unpredictability that initially defines the experience. Meanwhile, controlling the Terminators can feel cumbersome, as the slow, methodical pace sometimes crosses into tedium. Multiplayer options help alleviate this by introducing human unpredictability, which aligns more closely with the spirit of the original board game and adds a layer of replayability that the single-player mode alone struggles to sustain. In the end, *Space Hulk (Classic)* is a very specific kind of game—one that prioritizes authenticity over accessibility. It delivers a tense and atmospheric tactical experience that rewards careful planning and disciplined execution, but it also demands patience and a willingness to accept its rigid structure. For fans of the original board game or those deeply invested in the Warhammer 40K setting, it offers a faithful and immersive recreation that captures the essence of its source material. For players looking for a more flexible or modern strategy experience, its limitations may prove difficult to overlook. Rating: 7/10
