Last Vanguard is a hand-drawn 2D action-platformer with strong Metroidvania foundations, developed and published by Cool Tapir Studios. Set in a fractured world shaped by war and tyranny, the game places players in the role of a lone fighter navigating interconnected biomes filled with hostile forces, ancient secrets, and powerful adversaries. From the outset, it becomes clear that Last Vanguard is not merely a nostalgic tribute to classic side-scrolling adventures, but an attempt to merge traditional exploration design with shooter mechanics and RPG-style customization systems in a cohesive and challenging package. The world design follows classic Metroidvania structure, built around a large interconnected map divided into distinct biomes. Each region introduces new environmental hazards, enemy archetypes, and traversal challenges, gradually expanding the player's mobility toolkit as abilities are unlocked. Backtracking is a central part of progression, but it rarely feels arbitrary; newly acquired skills often open shortcuts, hidden areas, or optional encounters that meaningfully reward exploration. Secrets are plentiful, and players who carefully examine the environment will discover concealed passages, upgrade materials, and optional challenges that deepen the sense of immersion. Combat distinguishes Last Vanguard from more melee-focused Metroidvanias by leaning heavily into ranged weaponry and tactical loadouts. The arsenal includes a variety of firearms and special weapons, each suited to different scenarios. Some excel at crowd control, others at focused burst damage or sustained pressure. The game encourages experimentation through a system of active and passive abilities, allowing players to shape their build around mobility, survivability, or offensive strength. Equipment such as helmets and other gear pieces provide additional modifiers, subtly altering performance and playstyle. This layering of mechanics creates a satisfying sense of growth, especially as tougher enemies demand strategic adjustments rather than brute force. Boss battles are among the game's strongest highlights. Each major encounter features distinct patterns, multi-phase mechanics, and carefully choreographed attack sequences that test both reflexes and adaptability. Victory often requires understanding enemy behavior and optimizing weapon choice rather than simply reacting quickly. These confrontations serve as narrative and mechanical milestones, punctuating the journey with moments of intensity and accomplishment. The boss design reflects careful attention to pacing, ensuring that each encounter feels earned and memorable. Visually, Last Vanguard embraces a detailed hand-drawn pixel art style that enhances its dystopian atmosphere. Animations are fluid and expressive, with environmental backgrounds layered to create depth and immersion. The art direction supports the tone of a war-torn world without becoming visually cluttered. Enemy designs are varied and often imposing, reinforcing the sense of danger in each biome. Weapon effects and combat animations convey impact effectively, adding weight to encounters. While the aesthetic remains rooted in retro inspiration, it demonstrates modern polish in its execution. The RPG progression system complements exploration and combat, allowing players to invest in character development over time. Passive upgrades enhance health, stamina, or weapon efficiency, while active skills expand tactical options. The flexibility of builds increases replay value, as different configurations can significantly alter combat rhythm. Higher difficulty settings amplify this system's importance, demanding precise execution and thoughtful preparation. Players who embrace the strategic depth will find the challenge rewarding rather than punishing. Despite its strengths, the game is not entirely without technical imperfections. Some players have noted occasional bugs, minor performance issues, or controller quirks. However, these tend to be intermittent rather than game-breaking. The overall mechanical foundation remains solid, and the responsiveness of movement and combat carries the experience forward. Narratively, Last Vanguard adopts a restrained approach. Storytelling is conveyed primarily through environmental cues, character interactions, and contextual details rather than heavy exposition. The tone emphasizes survival and resistance in a crumbling world, leaving room for interpretation rather than explicit moral framing. This understated narrative style aligns well with the exploration-driven structure, allowing players to absorb lore organically. Ultimately, Last Vanguard stands as a confident entry in the modern Metroidvania landscape. Its blend of ranged combat, build customization, expansive exploration, and visually cohesive design creates a satisfying and challenging adventure. While it may not radically redefine the genre, it executes its core ideas with consistency and ambition. For players who appreciate methodical exploration, strategic combat, and layered progression systems within a hand-crafted 2D world, Last Vanguard offers a rewarding and engaging experience that balances difficulty with depth. Rating: 8/10
f****** in tents
Bonito y estético, buenos combates y enemigos, buena jugabilidad y súper recomendado para amantes de metroidvania y Hollow Knight, con su originalidad característica de ambiente bélico.
Last Vanguard is a masterclass in disciplined design and brutal elegance. This isn’t just another Metroidvania — it’s a tactical gauntlet wrapped in hand-drawn beauty. Every biome is a puzzle box, every boss a test of adaptability. The loadout system isn’t fluff; it’s the core of your survival. With many bosses fight & new weapon types, the game rewards players who think before they strike. The world is grim, the stakes are high, and the satisfaction of mastering its systems is unmatched. If you crave tight mechanics, meaningful progression, and handcrafted challenge, Last Vanguard delivers with surgical precision.
its hollow knight with guns. liked it a lot
