I'm not a pro visual novel gamer or anything but I quite enjoyed this one. I also like the extra voices that allow me to listen to various phrases in both standard Japanese and Kyoto dialect.
❌ Tested on Steam Deck, it doesn't even launch (10/12/2022). Game get's completely stucked in launching, I get a permanent Steam loading screen. Pretty average and cliché story, the routes are not interesting at all and some of the choices needed to get good/bad ending make no sense. This vn only works well as some sort of educational content about Kyoto or japanese culture.

Kyoto Colorful Days, developed by InterOne Inc. and published by Dogenzaka Lab and D3PUBLISHER, is a romantic visual novel that combines personal growth, cultural exploration, and heartfelt relationships into a relaxing narrative experience. Rather than focusing on dramatic conflicts or elaborate fantasy scenarios, the game tells a more grounded story about a young man struggling to find direction in his life. Seeking a fresh start, he travels to Kyoto, where new friendships and potential romances gradually reshape his outlook on the future. What makes the game particularly appealing is its strong connection to its setting. Kyoto is more than a picturesque backdrop; it serves as an essential part of the story's identity. Throughout the adventure, players are introduced to the city's traditions, atmosphere, and local culture while accompanying the protagonist on his journey of self-discovery. The narrative often slows down to appreciate the beauty and charm of the region, creating a peaceful and immersive experience that feels distinct from many fast-paced visual novels. The city itself becomes a character of sorts, influencing the tone and progression of the story. The plot centers on themes of maturity and purpose. The protagonist begins as someone uncertain about his career and future, but his interactions with the people he meets encourage him to reevaluate his priorities. The romantic elements involving the main heroines develop naturally alongside this personal transformation. Rather than existing solely as dating routes, the relationships contribute to the broader narrative about growth and finding meaning in everyday life. This approach gives the story a sense of realism that many slice-of-life fans will appreciate. The characters are one of the game's strongest assets. The heroines possess distinct personalities and motivations that help keep conversations engaging. Supporting characters also play meaningful roles by offering different perspectives on life in Kyoto. While the relatively short length of the visual novel limits the depth of some character arcs, the cast remains memorable and likable. Their interactions with the protagonist help maintain a warm and optimistic tone throughout the experience. Presentation is another area where Kyoto Colorful Days performs well. The artwork is bright and attractive, with character designs that effectively convey emotion and personality. The backgrounds capture the elegance and historical charm of Kyoto, helping players feel connected to the setting. The soundtrack complements the story with gentle and pleasant melodies, while the opening and ending themes reinforce the game's atmosphere. Together, the visuals and audio create an inviting experience that suits the narrative's relaxed pace. One of the most distinctive features is the extensive use of the Kyoto dialect in the voice acting. Most characters speak in the local dialect rather than standard Japanese, adding a level of authenticity rarely seen in visual novels. For players interested in Japanese language and culture, this aspect significantly enhances immersion. The inclusion of educational content that introduces regional phrases and expressions further strengthens the game's cultural appeal, making it both entertaining and informative. The game's primary weakness is its limited scope. Because the story is relatively brief, some romantic developments and character arcs feel somewhat compressed. Players who prefer lengthy visual novels filled with branching storylines and complex drama may find the experience too straightforward. Additionally, the slow pacing may not appeal to those looking for constant excitement. However, these shortcomings are largely a result of the game's deliberate focus on realism and atmosphere rather than action or suspense. Overall, Kyoto Colorful Days succeeds as a charming slice-of-life romance that emphasizes emotional sincerity, cultural authenticity, and personal development. Its thoughtful portrayal of Kyoto, endearing cast, and unique use of regional voice acting help it stand apart from many other visual novels. Although it may not offer the depth or length of genre giants, it delivers a pleasant and memorable journey that captures the spirit of self-discovery and the beauty of everyday moments. Rating: 8/10
Short lighthearted drama VN. Something different from the average VN on steam. Its focus is more on real life issues and problems rather than usual world saving/romance themes. Refreshing! Also it contains the collection of everyday expressions in both Tokyo and Kyoto Japanese so it is also possible to learn from this title. Big plus from me.
Go! Nippon! ~My first trip to Japan~. Go! Nippon! Go! Nippon!
