"The once mighty vessel reduced to a morbid can of death."
Das Boot horror with fixed camera angles is all I ever wanted. To get a big relevant problem out the way first, some artistic choices considering camera placements often caused me trouble. Those were especially maddening during the workshop and engine room fights. I was swearing like a sailor, lost and smothered in two square meters of space, exacerbated by the game being too dark. Raising brightness made it a bit ugly, alas. Its retro beauty shined through regardless, but I don't have to tell you the obvious. Okay, before I drowned you in my salty tears, let's dive in. The action takes place in alternate history, year 1978. Your diesel-nuclear submarine Domherren was sent to investigate why an oil platform in Norwegian Sea suddenly sunk. You're one of the deep divers who went there, got attacked, then came back unconscious, waking up near a corpse of your less lucky colleague. Your crewmates are worse than dead - overtaken by some parasitic black sludge that turned them into zombies. It's described as "drowning in one's own body", which is fitting. The freaks gurgle and it's so disturbing. A trusty Luger and a KLAS spade is all you get at the start. Use them wisely, for resources are scarce.
Compression
The scarcity isn't just for show like in most survival horror games. Ammo starvation is severe, so you must rely on dodging and knocking enemies down with your spade to get by. It's a submarine, after all, they aren't exactly suited for carrying tons of guns and bullets, it isn't safe. Even the aforementioned spade expires in a few hits, you'd have to repair it using another perishable resource. I even had to restart once because of all the ammo I wasted! Did it ever happen to you? Ever? Luckily, I only lost half an hour of progress. Still, that caught me off guard and I was so upset I had to put the game down for a while just to decompress. Some lost more and it's a bummer, I get it. But aren't you curious as to what comes next? Get over yourself, it's worth the hassle. Things gets better when you adapt to the pressure. In the end, I figured it out and fully support the hardcore vision. Long overdue. Most horror games feel condescending in this regard, implementing resource management as an obligatory stamp, not a feature that pertains to immersion. It doesn't necessarily make them bad, they're just missing out on a certain edge appreciated by masochists. The lack of space makes it extremely difficult to outmanoeuvre enemies even when you git gud at baiting their grabs. It helps that both classic and modern controls are responsive. Considering the difficulty and cursed cameras, more jank would be frustrating to deal with. You can always switch to easy, but it would hinder the suspense. Thanks to the hardships, the terror is visceral and truly deadly. Here, you gotta think which zombies are worth killing, prioritising crucial intersections. You'll see the hardcore depths of the cruel dilemma in every cramped corridor, slowly unwinding the mystery of the sludge while opening the sub's compartments one by one. To reveal their rapidly mutating dangers as well as more guns for your tight little arsenal. Knowing how precious every piece, every bullet is, you'll feel exalted to obtain each crumb left for you, and you'll need all you could get, for there's no safety anywhere. Ambushes could be sprung even in previously purged areas, draining your supplies further. Don't panic yet, at least the saving cassettes are plenty! Isn't it generous? See, you're allowed to experiment with optimal routing, make mistakes. Just don't let them snowball out of control, is all.
Decompression
I think that balances things out in a spartan kind of way. Once again, it fits the themes. A submariner's life is austere and uncompromising. Darkly comedic, too. The tone isn't entirely self-serious, which should be obvious from the title alone. It isn't a sad, tortured game, and I'm sorry if I made you think so. I found Heavy Metal Death Can much more manageable (and enjoyable) by the midpoint than it seemed at the start. It has fun at your expense on occasion, but it's only entertaining if you can laugh with it. To boot, gameplay-wise it's pure oldschool goodness. First of all, the ultra-violence feels good, meaty sounds and thick blood gushes are satisfying, which is paramount. Everything else simultaneously discourages and complements it. Relying on a traditionally handy map, you look for keys and codes, unlock shortcuts, and solve unsophisticated yet pleasant puzzles. Sometimes you meet other survivors and can meaningfully interact with them, even trade or receive gifts, sometimes pulling an innocuous switch drops a boss with a cute name like Corpsepile on your head and you die. It all feels familiar, a dependable survival horror loop is as potent as it ever was. A classy mechanical structure coupled with a unique setting resulted in a competently made, thought-out game. Pretty hardcore PS1-style game with great music, dark humor and a lot of nods to the classic like Resident Evil. I enjoyed it a lot, though I should mention that I basically soft-locked myself on my stream during the final boss fight. While I understand that the game is hardcore, giving enough ammo and healing items before the final boss fight is a common courtesy of every old survival horror game. And yes, there's a guy that gives you pistol ammo during the fight, but well... killing the final boss with pistol only and with no healing items is pretty hardcore challenge I wasn't ready for after 4+ hours of non-stop playing and 5 retries of the ruthless
engine startup sequence
. :D Nevertheless, the patch that added easy mode allowed me to finish the game on the next stream. And I enjoyed replaying it on my own. I'm glad to see that the developers continue balancing the game, and I hope more ammo and healing items will be added before the final boss. It's especially relevant for the new players who don't know that they need to conserve some specific type ammo for the final fight. :) I also encountered some crashes while playing in DX12 mode, which was surprising. However switching to DX11 fixed it. In any case, I would recommend the game for every fan of PS1 horror classics. For more immersion switch to tank controls and use a PS1-style controller with no thumbsticks. :)

If you love old school horror games like silent hill or fatal frame you will love this. Its a shorter game but crafted with so much love. You wont regret playing it! Sound design is fantastic which is rare in games these days. Soundtrack is also great. I love it!
Great classic survival horror game. It’s tense and a whole lot of fun. If you enjoy series like the original RE games this is an outstanding title to try. Game is unforgiving but you can learn the patterns and techniques through failure relatively easy, just be ok and patient with dying and starting again every so often.
I want to preface this review by saying I picked up the game soon after it released because when the developer released the demo, I made a comment on how they could improve their demo and the next day they informed me that they had implemented the change I suggested. I think that level of care and passion is prevalent and apparent throughout the game. I'm a big survival horror fan, so I say this with a fair bit of confidence: HMDC is a fantastic retro RE-like. The game is just long enough that it welcomes multiple playthroughs without being burdensome. While the story may not be anything revolutionary, I found the setting to be entirely unique--the claustrophobic walls of the submarine rooms added to the sense of horror that loomed around every pre-rendered corner. While I found the lack of saving items a bit too scare in Hard mode, I think otherwise the amount of resources that can be found enhance the "survival" aspect of the genre and this game in particular. The melee stun weapon I think is also a nice addition to the player's arsenal since it helps in a pinch if you're low on ammunition. Speaking of which, the game really does lean on the "you don't have to fight everything, and sometimes it's better to evade than to waste bullet" premise, and I think that too added to the sense of horror because the zombies would then never be removed from your path, so each time you roam around the submarine, you have to keep aware of which rooms still contained active threats. Overall, this was a fantastic first take for this developer and I'm excited to see what they craft next!
its so peak bruh
A handcrafted masterpiece that is a homage to the classic Resident Evil games from the PS1 era set in an extremely claustrophobic submarine that has just barely enough room for you to maneuver around danger. Heavy Metal Death Can scratches that survival horror itch with a fresh coat of paint with just the right amount of length perfect for replays. Been casually speedrunning it and I had a blast unlocking all the achievements. Definitely do buy it! It's only like a few bucks.
Absolutely worth the purchase. Game is a little on the short side but its very fun. If you're not a survival horror fan the game might be a bit hard in terms of resource management especially if you're used to games like the Resident Evil Remakes and not more "old school" horror. The Admiral must be protected at all costs.
Great game, I hope we see a sequel someday.
