I was sold an unplayable game, as this appears not to have been optimized for a modern machine. Steam should refrain from attempting to sell these older games without ensuring some standard of compatibility. This is a common issue on the platform that needs to be addressed. Otherwise, this game may be the most revolutionary RTS ever, where new concepts enabled more strategic and tactical thought within game play. I played this heavily in the early 2000s and it ran very smooth back then. Fix the compatibility issues.

Kohan is back baby :)
Fantastic little-known strategy game. Unique mix of game elements not really found in other real time strategy games, nor really replicated since. Squad based, hero-leveling, a little slower pace rewarding careful thought and positioning of units. Lots of strategic depth here. Campaign is solid. If you can find someone to play with, the highlight is the strategy that emerges when playing against a human opponent. I put it in the top-tier of classic PC strategy titles such as MOO2, Age of Wonders, Command and Conquer, etc. Note: requires adding some dll files to your game directory via patch (see discussion forum for link) in order to play on modern systems.
Amo este juego de estrategia en tiempo real, donde hay variedad de razas y unidades únicas. Las unidades se crean de a 5 o 7, el cual el uno de ellos es el general o héroe, y ganan experiencia/rangos.
It has terrible lag that prevents you playing. (Old games shouldn't lag in modern computers. If it does, it is either garbage coding or incompabilities with modern systems). Kohan II plays perfectly fine. Sadly, this is not playable.
SENCILLO, ANTIGUO, PERO LO DE QUE LAS TROPAS VAYAS COGIENDO EXPERIENCIA Y PODER ES INIGUALABLE
great solo game
To get this program running requires downloading some third party libraries, and be careful of malware. I wish these were the things Steam would handle when they offer these old games like GOG does, but whatever. Once it's running, it's a fairly smooth RTS game with some interesting mechanics. The economy is based off five resources, but in the end gold is the most important as it covers for the others. The upkeep on units and certain buildings constantly draw on the other four (stone, wood, iron, and magic) which do not accumulate if there is a surplus, so those are not so much commodities as "vectors" that end up determining how fast your gold supply is building up to be able to buy whatever you need next, and there are a decent number of buildings that tweak the economy. This game is not one where you just build a gaggle of whatever and send them off in a given direction (e.g. Starcraft). It's based on companies, which are designed by the player from available elements in melee, ranged, and support of various flavors depending on what faction you're playing and types of settlements you control. There are flanking and zone of control mechanics that feel natural, not just imposed by numbers to balance the game. Some find this game quite difficult as the A.I. doesn't seem to have any human-feel-good restrictions on it and isn't easily exploited. In many scenarios if you're slow you will get overwhelmed. However, unlike many RTS it does allow pause and give orders. It would have been better if unit view distances weren't quite so limited, and game controls could have used a quality of life pass by at least allowing reassignment of keys, but those are really minor. Overall, a fun retro RTS.
