Great old-school D&D 3/3.5 hack'n'slash. Much better than Temple of Elemental Evil IMHO. Fast paced, loot-rich, with great challenges.
A flawed masterpiece.
this game is too hard
Old review (2hrs): It's all RNG. Not worth it New Review(39 hrs): Just finished the game. Half of my hours was just leaving it on in the background so it should take someone around 20 hrs to finish the game. To enjoy this game you need to use all the gimmicks and cheesing you can. The tutorial is useless and was generally didn't finish it. Make sure you play with maximum stats and max health each level. Also the final boss wasn't even fun to beat. It was just tedious. Just spam Dehydration scrolls, irresistible dance and exhaustion.
I miss my table top days and this is the closest to scratching that itch. DND 3.5 is life, and KOTC is peak. EDIT: Finished it! Amazingly fun and addictive. Highly recommended CRPG!
Very fun game that is worthy of being a D&D 3.5e combat simulator, as other reviewers and people throughout the Internet have said. Despite being combat-focused, I feel you could get some DMing ideas from some of the combat encounters in the game. Just recently finished an ironman playthrough consisting of a dual-wielding light pick knight, a cleric, an enchanter wizard, and an evoker wizard without the maximum ability scores option enabled. Scribe scroll and crafting really saved my ass multiple times and helped me build my girls to be strong; there were a couple of times where I encountered game-breaking bugs whether from random encounters or from resting, so I had to use backup saves, which personally does not disqualify me since my party has not died in battle. The beginning battle with the orcs and gnolls was very tough and it ended many of my past ironman runs before they can even properly begin. However, once I got past the beginning battle was where I slowly but surely found my footing with my party and from there on, I had a tense but fun experience. The final boss was very difficulty and scary, but as I said, incredibly fun to face against. The post-game battle was absolutely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, though. Pray that RNG is on your side or get obliterated instantaneously. Because of this, I pretty much said "♥♥♥♥ it" to the ironman at this point since I was so tired of binging this game and thus, I restored my backup save to constantly do the post-game battle until I beat it for the achievement, "Supreme Knight Commander". Yes, that means I did not legitimately earn that achievement, but, I needed it anyways to 100% the game or else it will bother me forever. There are still ten achievements left for me to get at the time of writing this review, but honestly, I think I'm going to take a small break from this game before going at it again with another party; with maximum ability scores enabled this time. Need a god-like party as a palate cleanser.
This is a fantastic game for anyone who loves D&D 3rd edition. This takes you through a lot of the storylines from classic adventures, and is like a romp through AD&D with 3e rules. Its really welcome and fantastic. The intro area is harder, and more boring and confusing than it should be. But if you get past that, the rest of the game is really good. I'd absolutely recommend it. I want to play the 2nd version, I just am hesitating on the graphics. Even these "MS Graphics" are honestly better and more colorful and vibrant (and simple enough) that it's excellent immersion in fantasy. The new ones are a muddy mess.
Great old school style, with a robust modern interface. Love the graphics, reminds me of Ultima 7, but combat is easy to keep on top of. Def recommend this game!
Similar to Warriors of the Eternal Sun, but with a hint of Icewind Dale 2. Knights of the Chalice really scratches the itch for a game like Icewind Dale or Dark Sun, focusing on combat and character advancement instead of story. Knights of the Chalice has a few short comings. Out of combat movement can be frustrating, as it often positions your characters in ways you don't intend before triggering an ambush. The selection of feats is very limited, but it does have the essentials. Spells were a little disappointing, in that the selection of level 9 spells left a lot to be desired. No crossclassing means characters are pigeonholed into one strict role. The music is a little forgettable. Where Knights of the Chalice really shines though is customization. The ability to make and enchant your own gear is such a welcome deviation from the norm for this sort of game. Character builds don't have to revolve around premade gear. Likewise, custom enchanting means weapons feel just right. The selection for enchantments has all the regulars, but included some rare enchantments like Doom-Edge and Thundering. Doom-Edge in particular is a strange and very welcome pick, as the last appearance of this enchantment (to my knowledge) was on the two handed throwing axe "Big Black Flying Death" in Icewind Dale 2. Lastly, there's no timers. I can spend as much time as I want harassing the locals and bullying the wildlife and not have to worry about a failure timer ruining my fun. This game deserves way more attention and praise.
