I'm reviewing Steam games in alphabetical order, and you can watch my review here: https://youtu.be/3QjBv78UBlI tl;dw If you like 2D platformers with an amazing artstyle, great music, fantastic level design and an interwoven narrative, buy this game now. This game does have some roughness around the edges, but it is a wonderful experience that has been drastically overlooked. This game is 100% worth your time. Two pieces of advice though: 1) Play with a controller, they keyboard and mouse controls are awkward. 2) Take the final boss one step at a time, it is possible to soft-lock yourself if you break both walls too early.
At the start, it seems like an original and well-designed game, with a semi-fresh approach to precision platformer genre. But check out the achievements page: not more than 20% of the players got to the fourth chapter, even less got to the finish. Why is that? There are multiple problems that lead to that. First of all, novelty of design quickly vanishes. Chapters differ in color and some small sprites, but for player they almost look the same. What worse, the gameplay is also the same, with the addition of some small gimmick in each chapter; and these gimmicks are pretty basic, such as wind, lasers and shooting enemies. An interesting idea is the design of the narration that is literally the text that appears inside the levels alongside your movement. There are two problems with it. First, it looks silly as long as you backtrack or respawn (which you'll do hundreds of times). Second, it is nearly impossible to read after the second chapter, because gameplay becomes hard and quick enough that you just don't have any spare attention. Oh, the gameplay. It is really constructed of just a couple of elements: Klaus "hacks" the consoles and K1 "crashes" them. Klaus jumps and is small, K1 "flies" and is big. Well, that is pretty everything you'll get, rinse and repeat. "Memory" bonus levels are somewhat original, but that's all. And please, makers of "hard platformers", stop this approach of "one fail and respawn". Yes, there are checkpoints (in some games you have to replay all the screen or even an entire level); yes, it is clear and minimalistic; but it gets too. freaking. repetitive! It may be acceptable for "challenge" games like super meat boy, where there are virtually no plot and each screen is a "puzzle" to solve, but in a game with a long plot and characters speaking to each other through on-screen texts... It gets worse only in games with long cutscenes. Now the story. This is even worse, because it does not hook you from the beginning. Amnesia, seriously? Many games start with something intriguing and then disappoint you with a weak ending. This is not the case: the life of Klaus ("ordinary office worker", "clone of a clone") is not interesting in the slightest, and his hysteria towards the player (!) is strange and off-putting. Seeing such a bland character, I thought he we transform, become someone interesting, gain powers, find himself in a complex surreal situation... But no, nothing like that. He... does not want to be ordinary and follow the order. Well, relatable, and? And nothing more, if you collect all the bonuses, he will "go outside" to "be on his own". Just compare this game to "Thomas was alone". It is also a single-player puzzle-platformer with multiple characters, but it does not have most of the problems of "Klaus". The narration exist, but it has a voice over, not forcing you to read and jump at the same time. There are much more characters than just two. Minimalist design does not try to look complex, and looks good in result. Levels are shorter and the game does not stretch itself to 6-8 hours. Why be so long if you have so little to show for it? Honestly, just restricting the gamelength to 2-3 chapters would do wonders to this otherwise long and repetitive slog of an original, but banal game. Extra tip for the problem of constantly running often mentioned in reviews: on Steam Deck, set run button to "left stick touch". With that, you will manipulate the stick to move and at the same time "press" the run button by touching it!
Pretty satisfying story and good level designs, but there are some issues - whats the point of manual run when you MUST run for 90% of the game - jump is not responsive at all times
It's honestly a really interesting game with a lot of effort put into it. I think the game is worth the price tag given the overall quality, I just have a few minor issues with it. I think the game is on the shorter side, even when taking your time. (about 4 hours). And my biggest issue is that the platforming doesn't feel that great, it's definitely what someone might consider "rough around the edges". Every other aspect of the game is well designed. It's a great concept, the levels and story are well designed, and the aesthetic and presentation of the game are really well done.
Fantastic game in nearly every aspect except the platforming itself. Highly recommend if you're looking for a game with a very unique aesthetic and narrative, recommend less so if you're just interested in a pure platformer with very solid mechanics.
I started the game not expecting anything, but damn the story blew my mind. Controls are very fluid , almost like playing mario. Controlling 2 character at same time is challenging , but you get the hang of it. The levels design are top notch. It takes around 4-6 hrs to complete the game, depending on how u play Overall : Great game .
