I'm a big fan of the physical game, and gasped out loud when I saw this listed on the store. It does not disappoint at all. The animation, ease of use on Steam Deck and inclusion of quests make it an excellent digital edition of this well-loved board game. If you like Carcassonne and other tile placement games, you'll probably love this. Highly recommended!
Full review: https://youtu.be/C_X1OEjxi5s Unfortunately, although Kingdomino's digital edition translates the basic gameplay from the board game, it's otherwise a mostly hollow and shallow experience. It feels rushed in many places or as though not enough attention-to-detail or care was given, it has a barebones online experience that is overshadowed by the version of Kingdomino on Board Game Arena, and it uses deceptive marketing rhetoric, advertising an "immersive single-player campaign mode" with Lost Kingdom, when it is none of those things. I can't recommend this one, see my full thoughts in the video.
A fun and and satisfying version of the Kingdomino board game. The game plays just as it does physically with the added bonus of being able to unlock more rewards and ways to play. Always nice to have the option to play board games online when nobody is around in person!
Simple enough rules meant the short tutorial covered everything. Deep enough that I'm still about 50:50 against the Easy AI. I can't speak to how the AI stands up against a better player than I am, but I'm optimistic. I have not tried multiplayer yet, as to me part of the appeal of digital board games is being able to pop in and out of a game for just a few minutes or even abandon it entirely without ruining everyone else's experience. The wide selection of achievements for following different scoring strategies (even for trying and failing) and periodic quests to unlock cosmetics are very nice touches, letting you customize the digital experience much more easily than the physical tabletop.
Kingdomino was featured on my YouTube channel https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3609509378 and now onto the short review
TL;DR Review
//intro// Hello, MF Kraven here- and welcome to a less than 10 mins review. A YouTube series where I take a look at niche titles, hidden gems & often overlooked games & tell you whether or not you should buy it, in less than 10 mins. So if that is the type of content that you like, consider subscribing, & liking this video. Today I take a look at Kingdomino, based on the 2016 tile board game of the same name. Kingdomino. Winner of the 2017 Spiel des Jahres or Board Game of the Year in 2017. Will the critically acclaimed board game translate to Steam or is it lights out at Family Game Night? Lets find out. //Graphics, Sound & Artstyle// While not incredibly impressive when it comes to visuals, I do appreciate the artstyle of Kingdomino. One board based on the live action & the other on a steam version. I do hope we get more boards in the coming months; even ones in plain colors to differentiate the mountains & swamps. I like that different castle pieces can be unlocked through gameplay & the music is nice. //Gameplay// Kingdomino is a 2-4 player game. Most matches vary anywhere between 5-12 mins. Every game starts with a random drawing on who goes first. Upon learning who goes first, each player takes a turn picking a domino- there are Forest, Wheat, Grass, Water, Swamp & Mountain tiles. Some pieces have 1, 2 or 3 crowns. Each crown counts as a point, and any similar tile touching the crown tile multiplies the score. Another way to earn points is to do "quests" these include objectives like making sure all four corners of the board have a domino or making sure none of your dominos get discarded. The goal of the game is to have the most points at the end of the game. //Price// 13.99 USD //How many hours estimated// As aforementioned, the games have taken me anywhere between 5-12 mins. I have 4 1/2 hours in and 20 something games played, and with the ease of multiplayer on it- it's going to be on my repertoire, //Is it Playable on Steamdeck?// Not only is it playable on SteamDeck but this entire footage was captured on an ROG Ally, it runs marvelously & will give you plenty of games before you need to plug in. //Final Thoughts// Honestly when I first heard of Kingdomino I wasn't too impressed, was it trying to be Carcassone & Catan? I was burnt on the video game adaptation of one of the two in the past few years.. But thanks to Lucy, who works over at Meeple Corp- I got to try the game out a few days in advanced, and I was amazed. I've been dealing with a brutal 2025, & to just pick up my SteamDeck for less than 10 mins to play a match feels cathartic. The gameplay loop was so easy to pick up, actually so much so that even my 8 year old son gravitated towards it & won his first match after a few tries. Heres the HUGE warning for some of you RNG haters, yes often as well as you may want to strategize it comes down to the LUCK of the draw. When presented with the 4 dominos, the next turn order will go as follows- whoever picks the top domino goes first the next turn, whoever picks the second goes second and so forth. While usually the 3rd and 4th dominos have more lucrative tiles, it's not always like this. Ive had turns where none of the dominos even had crowns on them and I'll get creamed by AI. But for someone like me, who not only do I not mind it, I welcome the RNG elements- it's become something I'm sort of obsessed with at the moment. I hate to sound cliche but it truly is one of those easy to learn, hard to master games as even the placement of your tiles can affect the end game. Lets say you only have forest & water tiles open on your board but the selection of dominos dont have any of your tiles- well the domino will be discarded or broken. So always be careful when placing your dominos from the very beginning. One thing I would like to change would be to have the option to not see the score of your opponents. Without playing with quests, what you see is what you get in the roundup, so you know whether or not you won a game. I'd love the option to go "blind" and find out in the last screen what everyone scored. Despite my small qualms I have, I can only praise the actual gameplay loop of Kingdomino My 8 year old son approves, I got him a copy, my wife approves I will be getting her a copy & I 100% approve and with it being crossplay with mobile device it doesnt take long to find an online opponent. After Thanksgiving dinner this upcoming Thursday, we're gonna gather in the living room & play a few rounds of Kingdomino Final Rating?
Buy it Now!
I was really excited for this adaptation. However, I had to request a refund for it because on the very first session of pass & play it bugged out and didn't let us continue playing and we were 1 turn away from finishing the game. Big shame. If the developer is interested, maybe this can help you replicate the bug and potentially fix it: It was a 1v1 pass & play session with no additional controller on steam deck oled. I laid my tile down and before I ended my turn I clicked on my opponent's profile to see her kingdom, but when I returned to my kingdom my tile wasn't there anymore. It was back in the selection area, and except for clicking the end my turn button I couldn't do anything so I clicked the button and nothing happened. I restarted the game and when I resumed it the only thing visible on the screen was the clouds. Tried again but no luck. If such a crucial bug exists I expect there to be more issues, so I cannot recommend this unfortunately, I may consider coming back to it, but not anytime soon.
A simple board game that anyone can learn. It's relaxing and fun to play with a friend. The graphics are just VERY janky, and it's connected to the mobile game which feels very 'mobile'-y. If you find it on a sale and want a quick board game to play with friends, then sure. But I wouldn't normally. Maybe just get it on your phone? Finished? - Steam Achievements? Absolutely no. Steam Deck? Worked well. Rating? 6.5/10 My curator page: https://store.steampowered.com/curator/45865425-CozyAriGames/ Full videos on Youtube.
아주 깔끔하게 군더더기 없이 잘 만들었음. 확장팩 [퀸 도미노]도 기대해 봅니다.
