Short visual novel. Quality visual novel about a girl who wants to become an idol. Just about everything in this game is fantastic (the art, story, voice acting, music, you name it). It is shame that this game lasts only for about an hour. The higher price tag is absolutely worth it and justified considering how well made it is.
Sometimes, I just cannot help but feel utterly proud when I see someone growing. There is nothing more satisfying than finally reaching your goal after a lot of hurdles. Thus, Kirakira Stars Project Ai immediately caught my interest due to its premise of being a producer with a childhood friend who wants to become an idol. I mean who can pass on a visual novel that revolves around cute girls who work hard for fulfilling their dream? To those who are unsure about whether Kirakira Stars Project Ai is right up their ally, there is a free demo available on the store page that covers half of the game. Whilst there is an 18+ patch available for Kirakira Stars Project Ai, I didn't manage to successfully install it. Thus, this review will be solely based on my experience with the all-ages version on Steam. In all honestly, there wasn't a moment where I felt like something was missing, so I'm guessing the patch just adds extra H scenes.
Let's Become An Idol!
Kirakira Stars Project Ai revolves around Nobuyuki who works in the entertainment industry as a producer. However, he struggles quite a lot as his company, ODA Productions, itself isn't popular at all and is in danger of getting closed down. Anyway, one day he randomly reunites with his childhood friend Ai Amane. Lucky for him, she decides to help him as he was forced to leave his employee dorm. And thus, Nobuyuki moves in with Ai. When she noticed that his company has a hard time, she decides to become an idol to help saving ODA Productions from bankruptcy.
Does This Visual Novel Contain Romance?
So, let's start with the most important topic in Kirakira Stars Idol Project Ai: Is it a romance game? The answer is: No, it's not! I admit I was expecting Nobuyuki to romance Ai as well, however, this game turned out completely different than I anticipated in that regard. However, it doesn't have to be a bad thing per se as not every game has to contain romance to tell a decent story. In that specific case, I would say that romance does not fit into the happenings at all, as Kirakira Stars Idol Project Ai is a rather short game, and thus, there is simply not enough time for a romance to properly develop.
What Kind of Game is it, if not Romance?
Well, Kirakira Stars Idol Project Ai focuses solely on Ai's path of becoming an idol. As she is new to this profession, it's evident that she needs a lot of training to improve. However, Nobuyuki and Ai are still noticeably but slowly getting close to each other. I mean, they have to spend a lot of time together after all, as idol and manager. Anyway, I would describe their relationship as a purely platonic one, which makes it even harder for me to imagine what the game is like with the 18+ patch, but I digress. If I had to put a label on Kirakira Stars Idol Project Ai, it would be slice-of-life. The reader mostly follows Nobuyuki and Ai through their everyday lives while Ai is trying to improve her skills and meets new people along the way. I would say that this visual novel is rather light-hearted. I love feeling-good stories and despite the hardships, this game is definitely one of them. I felt proud when Ai was growing and ended up really liking her.
Episodic Visual Novel
It's important to keep in mind that Kirakira Idol Project is an episodic series with Ai being the first game in the series. Thus, the story is not completed yet and Ai still has a long way to fulfilling her dream. However, the story itself feels completed with a satisfying conclusion — except for a cliffhanger at the very end that teases at a next entry. The player can just ignore that part of the game if they only want to experience the first game, although there is still the option of continuing the journey with Nobuyuki and Ai.
Ending, Choices, and Their Impact
Kirakira Stars Idol Project Ai contains choices, however, those only slightly alter the dialogue. The main story, on the other hand, stays the same. Thus, there is only one single end available the player can reach and this visual novel works out like a kinetic novel. This means that the reader never has to worry about making the wrong choice, yet still makes them feel like they can actually interact with the story. This aspect leads me back to the romance aspect. It may be possible that Nobuyuki will get together with a girl with further episodes, however, I honestly don't think that this series will go this way. The reason for that is that the game introduces more girls but only offers the player a single end. Although it's still possible for Nobuyuki pursuing Ai.
Graphics, Voice-Acting, and the Immersion
Graphic-wise, Kirakira Stars Idol Project Ai is stunning. Something that makes this visual novel stand out is that the sprites are so lively with their whole body moving around and characters blinking. However, a possible downside is that there are only two sprites available, although the game is so short that I didn't really notice the lack of sprites. Anyway, the game makes up for it more than enough with gorgeous CGs and, in all honesty, the amount of it is impressive given the game can be finished within an hour. Additionally, the voice-acting is high-quality and was pleasant to listen to.
Technical Issues
However, there are a few technical issues available here. None of them were grave enough to hinder the experience with Kirakira Stars Idol Project Ai, although I would like to list them nonetheless.
First of all, the backlog is not working properly. It does work most of the time, however, sometimes the text is too long so it didn't fit into the log's textbox and the game only displays a part of the previous text. This luckily didn't happen too often.
This mostly affects fast reader, but when I was advancing with the text too fast, it only showed the first couple words of the text and otherwise, the textbox stayed blank. Luckily, it was still possible for me to look up the text in the backlog, but then the issue above was present again when the text was too long. This issue was, fortunately, solvable when I set the speed of text to the maximum.
A minor nitpick here is that there were some untranslated words present throughout the English version of the game, although it mostly only affected the names of the characters. Therefore, it luckily didn't bother me a lot, although it wasn't clear who was talking at times.

So, what do we have in the end?
Kirakira Stars Idol Project Ai is such a short and lovely game that revolves around an adorable trying to fulfill her new dream. I love games that focus on the characters, which is the case for this visual novel. Although I expected some sort of romance in this game, I think it doesn't fit into the happenings after going through it so I found it was the right decision to not implement it. That being said, Kirakira Stars Idol Project Ai is a must-play for fans of the slice-of-life genre and I will definitely keep an eye on future games in this series.
Gameplay
This is a virtual novel, which means that the "gameplay" is mostly clicking through text. Every so often, you will be given a choice, which (slightly) changes the dialogue you'll see. They have little impact, and the story will not significantly change based on your decisions. With that in mind, this title has poor replay value.
Story
First thing's first, we are introduced to the main character Ai (in more ways than words, if you catch my drift). You play as Nobuyuki, her childhood friend. He's sharing a room with Ai, and he's also her manager (more on that later). He was living on the streets before he encountered her, and she offered him a place to stay. He was removed from his dorm after a change of ownership, and The next morning, he returned to his job (ODA Productions). He forgot to bring a lunch, but Ai delivered a homemade one his way. A man from ODA's parent company (Imagawa Productions) appears. He expects ODA to produce profit in six months, despite gross budget and staff cuts. Ai offers to join the crew as an "idol", in hopes of helping Nobu out. Idols are public entertainers, models whom sing and dance for the public. In this world, they are extremily popular. She's got a lot to learn, but she shows a lot of promise as a future idol. She's the company's chance at redemption, and Nobu's chance at love. Most of the story is told from his viewpoint, but sometimes we get to peak inside Ai's head during key moments of her career. In my opinion, the game (eventually) ended abruptly. However, it was implied that there will be a sequel.
Visuals
The title menu has what you'd expect (for a virtual novel), including a gallery (labeled as "Omake"). If you can't read Japanese, be sure to select your prefered language before starting a new game. The title menu is simple and appealing. When playing the game, everything you'd need (and expect) in a virtual novel is displayed at the bottom of the screen. To hide the in-game user interface, hit the "right-mouse" button. The character portraits are rendered with 3D models, and are very animated. They look great, though only two characters have models. Of the two, Ai has at least four outfits, but I there were a handful of scenes that spared the models. I assume that the developers didn't have the 3D assets for these scenes. Every so often, a full art image will invade the screen, during important moments in the story. A lot of visual novels reserve full art images for just a few moments or the ending. The frequency of these scenes helps maintain a visual variety as you read along. These scenes can be viewed as desired in the gallery. - The Goods - Most of the full art scenes depict Ai. Some are mildly lewd, but most depict (non-adult) events in the story, mostly bonding with Nobu. They all look great, but nothin' was too saucy.
Verdict
This is a cutesy virtual novel, though much too short for the asking price (of thirteen USD). I'd wait for a (significant) sale before picking it up. But if you enjoy all-round happy tales, this story fits the bill.
Support the Wombat
If you enjoy my review(s), please follow my Curator page.
"Let's support anime idol girl from behind and have hot relationship! ヽ(=´▽`=)ノ"

[1] Intro
kirakira stars idol project AI. This is a visual novel by sushi_soft. As you may know, this game is a spin-off based on the idol produced game 'Idol Wars Z' serviced by DMM GAMES. You can find the R18 + patch in the Steam community.
[2] Game Experience
Play time is about 2-3 hours. The story goes as expected. In particular, if you have experienced similar idol anime franchises, you may feel familiar with this game. You meet your childhood friend. The friend is a girl who is aiming for an idol. You live with her and support her idol project. The story does not include much, and the rest seem to continue in subsequent series. Character design and illustrations are good overall. 2D live animation is applied and full voice is supported for the main heroine characters. They remind us of well-known idol anime characters. So if you apply a special patch, you can experience quite good satisfaction. There are three H events. Some menus are not translated, but there was no problem with gameplay. It is a visual novel that can be enjoyed with a light hearted overall.
[3] Pros (+) & Cons (-)

[+] Idol Anime Girls
[+] 2D Live Animation
[+] Full Voice Supported
[+] Free R18+ Patch (External)

[-] Rushed Events
[-] A Bit Overpriced
[-] Somewhat Short
[-] Missing Achievements

[4] Verdict: Game 7.5/10, Translation 8.5/10
kirakira stars idol project AI. This is the first start of sushi soft. Honestly, the first impression for this publisher name sushi soft, was Nukige. But their work was better than expected. This is a Japanese anime visual novel with above average quality. Looking forward to their future projects. Recommended!
