At the first sight, you could label Tux and Fanny with a lot of attributes. Minimalist, simple, cosy, wholesome etc. You would be right. And you wouldn't. It's a game that jiggles in some quantum state which you can never exactly capture. Sure, the story really is about two friends who want to play football, smell flowers, watch clouds go by and just go with the flow of life. But main characters will sow first seed of doubt as soon as they introduce themselves with cute smiles and mechanical, emotionless slavic voices which will be sending shivers down your spine for the rest of the adventure. Game is full of unsettling moments. From occasionally weird character's reactions, to ominous surreal incursions. But in spite of lynchian menace seemingly waiting around every other corner, game stays being the sunny afternoon buddy adventure till the end. It creates very unique kind of dense uncertain atmosphere I think I've never experienced before. It's wtsisgoinoning and sweetchilling at the same time. Tux and Fanny surprise in other ways, too. For one, it's not as simple as it seems. It's actually full fledged adventure with lots of puzzles, subquests, parallel storylines (you also play as a cat or flea), optional activities like collectibles and minigames (in form of plethora of PC games T&F can play on their computer). There are also strong, emotionaly impactful moments. It's a rich, strange ride with many clever ideas and worth way more one would reasonably expect. P. S. it's very hard for me to put my feelings about this game into words. you should really experience it for yourself, you'll see what i mean tux and fanny is hauntological, like an adaptation of a lost children's cartoon from decades past, melancholic and introspective but also full of whimsy and a simultaneously mature and childlike wonder at the world and everything in it. it's a slice of life, "comfy", but in a grounded way that a lot of "comfy" games struggle to achieve with their saccharine, overly sanitised, and often infantilising representations of (or replacements for) reality there's a simple beauty to its philosophy on life that's nice to experience even if you don't necessarily agree with it
this game is like if you were to find a bottle washed up on a beach shoreline, and inside that bottle was the greatest game ever made
Tux and Fanny is one of the most charming games I've had the pleasure of playing. The mechanics of Tux and Fanny are similar to other puzzle games. There is a focus on collecting items and figuring out the application of said items. Alongside this however, there are dozens of mini-games that switch up the mechanics like a platformer mini-game and even a first person shooter. There is so much to do in this game that I don't even know how I would begin to list it all out. While I won't give specifics for fear of spoilers, this game has the best mechanical usage of Checkhov's gun. I was genuinely left awestruck by how ingenious it was, something that I have not felt towards a video game in a long time. Alongside its wonderful gameplay, Tux and Fanny is so creative and varied in its aesthetics. There is quite literally every type of visual from live action to claymation. The effort and quality of this game's art is genuinely shocking. There was never a moment where the game failed to capture my interest, a section that I could not sit through, or a music track that I did not find myself enjoying. Every time I unlocked a new area or found a new activity I was excited to see what creativity this game would blast me with next. Finally the games atmosphere. This is what has propelled Tux and Fanny to becoming one of my favourite games of all time. The vibe of this game is so deeply comforting. It really does capture the feeling of doing the most random stuff with a friend. While I have yet to summon mythical creatures, the activities in this game like reading a book together or searching for insects took me back to playing with my friends. Another type of nostalgia this game elicited was for those bizarre YouTube series of the 2010's. Things like Salad Fingers and Don't Hug Me I'm Scared were some of my favourite media pieces because of their bizarre horror and creepy comfort. This game perfectly captures that vibe, albeit with much less terror. To me, this game really brought a sense of peace I have not felt in a while. After starting University, things have gotten so complicated. I've moved away from all my friends and from my days of childhood bliss. For the thirteen hours it took me to 100% this game, I was transported back to a simpler time without the madness of academics. A time where a rusty spoon licking green man could impart unprecedented fear into me. The fact that this game only has 47 reviews is a travesty. If you are reading this, I cannot implore you enough to buy this game. Be it full price or discounted, Tux and Fanny is a game like no other and a game that you will not regret playing.
to start, my playtime is low because i 100%ed this game on xbox with a friend and bought it to write this review. this game radiates a sense of beauty and comfort that completely transcends my ability to articulate. its like a psychedelic therapy session in digital form. it's simultaneously a simple lighthearted adventure and a blisteringly profound meditation on the experience of comfort itself. i am entirely incapable of capturing the experience in text and all i can do is beg you to play this game.
Playing this feels like surfing a very calm wave in a sea of ants, but your skin is made of numbers
An increasingly ridiculous and creative adventure game that is clearly a long-term passion project from genuine people making art for the few who will give this game the attention and commitment it deserves. Many moments gave me the rare impression of experiencing "outsider art," when most video games are aching to be loud, fast and profitable. It's absurd and silly like much of the wholesome and quirky comedy in the films of Don Hertzfeldt or Jared Hess, but obviously with its own identity too. Its audience seems to be the generation of people nostalgic for the simplicity of retro games, as indie developers of today start learning with programs like Clickteam Fusion, where the most primitive of design can still draw childlike inspiration no matter how small the final product may be. This is why the dozens of minigames throughout Tux and Fanny feel like short projects done by maybe a hundred different programmers and digital artists despite all of them coming from just Albert Birney and Gabriel Koenig. I bring this up because Tux and Fanny achieves a meditative appreciation of life and creativity that is more humble than sensational. All those minigames may not strive to be anything huge, but they were made by people doing what they *know* they could do, and collecting all these little ideas is what may actually build your biggest accomplishments. I could clap, jump and sing about how hilarious the game is, how it can be scary at points, how surreal and beautiful the dream sequences are, but a few words doesn't come close to what this game means to me. It's a full spectrum of fun, reflection and nonstop surprises. I've run into dozens of people who have said they loved a movie for one good joke that made them laugh (once) so I guess something like Tux and Fanny breaks the gauge by those standards. I loved this game and now I gotta watch all the Tux and Fanny videos and official movie now. Thank you, Albert Birney!
this is a beautiful and delightful experince. tired by how souless video games have become? then this is the answer. i was blown away by how much love and attention to detail the game displays. i only regret i can never experince it again for the first time.
This game had me crying over fleas
