About
Quilts and Cats of Calico is a cozy board game in which the player's main task is to make a quilt from patterned fabric scraps. By smartly combining the colors and patterns of the scraps, the player can not only score points for the completed design but also sew on buttons and attract adorable cats, who have their own preferences for bedding patterns.

Stepping beyond adaptation
In Quilts and Cats of Calico, based on the board game Calico, you will be immersed in a warm, cozy world full of cuddly cats. Here the quilt bends under the weight of their paws and loud purring can be heard. It's a world full of patterns and designs awaiting the master quilt maker.
We also have a few surprises for the Calico fans like variations of the rules and mechanics in the campaign play. In addition to the well-known gameplay scenarios, new ones await to be discovered.
Quilt solo, with friends, or with strangers
Whether you want to quilt solo or prefer to compete with other players, Quilts and Cats of Calico will provide you with the corresponding gameplay mode. You will have cross-platform multiplayer at your disposal, during which you can invite friends or play ranked matches against random players. The more peaceful solo mode allows you to face AI of varying difficulty levels and is the perfect tool to hone your skills in a relaxed atmosphere.

Sew your adventures in the city of cat worshippers
In the game, you can also enjoy the story mode campaign. An extraordinary world inspired by the works of Studio Ghibli awaits you. Here cats have great power and influence over people's lives. Take on the role of an itinerant quilter who decides to succeed in a city of cat-worshippers. Climb to the top of the city hierarchy and face the opponent who wants to dominate the world of humans and cats. Create quilts, perfect your craft, and help those you meet on your journey. Don't worry, you won't be alone - along the way, you'll meet friends and, most importantly, cats whose help can prove invaluable…

Spend quality time with your cats
In Quilts and Cats of Calico, cats are active during your games. Sometimes minding their own business, and other times coming to you and your quilt. They will lazily observe the board, romp and run around, and sometimes fall into a blissful nap. They are cats, you never know. You can interact with them during the game, pet them, and shoo them away when they get in the way.

Extended customization options
The game is full of cats, but there could always be more! In Quilts and Cats of Calico, you can create your own, making your game even more wholesome! You can give it a name, choose the color of its fur, and put on different outfits. If you wish, it will appear on the board during your gameplay. It will also be possible to choose a different player's portrait and background for the game. Pick what you like best!

Beautiful, relaxing music
We asked Pawel Górniak, the composer responsible for the soundtrack to the digital version of Wingspan, to create the music for Quilts and Cats of Calico. Thanks to it, you will not only be able to deeply feel the atmosphere of the game but let yourself be carried away by blissful relaxation.
Follow my Curator page, Fruit N Doggie Reviews, so you can be updated whenever I post a new review.

Overall Rating - Seriously Flawed ★★☆☆☆

First Impressions
Playing a digital version of a board game can make for an interesting diversion, so I wound up installing Quilts and Cats of Calico (QC) to see how it'd play with an online friend. I've never played it in real-life, so I came into it without any preconceptions. However, unless there's a couple of different set-ups available, I would think the physical copy would get stale after a while.
Gameplay
This game revolves around tiles that are made up of two factors: their color and pattern. Each of those variables have six options. The colors are light blue, dark blue, yellow, pink, green, and purple, while the patterns are stripes, polka dots, flowers, X's, fern leaves, and a swirling image. You want to place tiles so they'll earn you the most amount of points, and there's three methods available. On the side of the board will be cats, displaying what way the tiles have to be placed, and what pattern has to be used. However, color isn't a factor here. If a cat wants a line of five tiles placed in a row, and likes stripes and flowers, you have to place either five flowers or stripes in a row, without mixing or matching the two. Secondly, goals are placed on the board, with the six surrounding tiles having to match the letters displayed. You only earn max points for both the pattern and color matching the goal, but if either one qualifies, it at least earns the lowest value. Last and probably easiest is placing three tiles of the same color together. Because you're striving to reach a high score, you want to be selective and strategic when selecting tiles from the draw pile. Each player has their own board to work with, but share the same pool of tiles, meaning that as you wait for your turn, it's likely your opponent will take tiles you'd want. Since you can't see their board, there's no real way to predict what they'll take. My friend informed me the physical copy has three of each specific piece available, and from what I've observed here, this game follows that limitation. If you play through the Story, missions often present pieces in a predetermined order, with a strict way to properly place tiles to beat the objective. Otherwise though, I believe tiles are randomly generated, although it may prevent too many of one pattern or color from occurring in a row. The tutorial never mentioned this, but when looking at the preview window, you can check the order for all the remaining tiles, which is crucial information to have. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3750462681
Controls
This title works well with either a mouse or controller. Sometimes, it would mix up which tile I was wanting to place, but these were minor issues that took little effort to resolve. Overall, I think a mouse would be easier to use, yet I appreciate the option to play with a controller too.
Story
Honestly, I tend to encourage developers to be creative with their storytelling, as it can make matters interesting. There's a fine line between creativity and totally unhinged though, and I have no idea where the link was made between quilting, cats, and the machinations of war, “Listen up ladies! We quilt, we love cats, and we're at war with the enemy. Lead us to victory!” The reason for attracting cats is because their presence leads to magical effects, but you never actually see anything happen, so it sounds pretty dodgy. To put it another way, I think they're all crazy, and the game's writing never proves me wrong. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3750463259
Visuals
Even if you see an ugly looking animal, it's not something you want to insult. It makes you wonder what might have happened to the poor thing. Unfortunately, the cat on the title screen kind of has that look. None of the others would make it into a pet food commercial, but they don't have such an unpleasant appearance. When the game revolves around a highly beloved animal, your one goal is to make it look good, and they failed. Humans don't fare any better, as their unchanging facial expressions stamped onto what seem to be cardboard cutouts doesn't work well. The gameplay itself looks fine, but that was a really easy bar to clear, “You made hexagon tiles look serviceable. Cheers.”
Sound Design
Because of the strange storyline, what should be otherwise relaxing and fitting music doesn't quite mesh with everything players know. You aren't shown to be on the front lines of the battle, but times of war are still somber and downcast, so playing quaint tunes as you calmly quilt wouldn't seem quite right. The music would most likely have a sullen atmosphere, reminding everyone of the importance for doing this rigorous duty. If it weren't for the out of place plot and tone it creates, this would be the sort of relaxing instrumental tunes you'd expect and want from a game like this. I'm stressing this point because I want to emphasize how important the total package is, and trying to shove in an element that doesn't belong might not only effect that single aspect. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3750462318
Pros
🌟 The tutorial and story objectives help show the rules and good approaches for playing the game. 🌟 Having a digital version of a board game available saves physical space.
Cons
❌ I know people routinely cry out for representation, but I'm not sure if it's a benefit in this case. When you've got a story that seems nutty already, and then make one of the weirdest characters non-binary, I don't think that's really a perk. ❌ Even though every tile around the border isn't restricted to a single pattern, everything else about how the board is arranged is static. How many blank spaces there are, where you're able to place the goals, etc. ❌ Theoretically, you can play this online, but whenever I tried clicking on that option, it doesn't even load the next screen. This is a known issue the developers never touched or attempted to fix.
Tips
🔍 Placing a piece in the areas where the goals overlap earlier on makes it easier to find a match. Otherwise, by the time you're nearing the end, you've likely placed pieces in a way that nothing would work for everything, “I need a striped tile with polka dots that's green and purple, but not pink.” 🔍 One of my better scoring rounds came from focusing on attracting cats, and matching colors or tile goals when possible. Since cats require you to place the same pattern near each other, it coincides with the other objectives.
Final Thoughts
After a while, I realized the concept for QC is similar to a title I've played called Alchemy. The entire concept is to make the board gold by placing tiles next to each other, matching them either by their pattern or color. It's not incredibly relevant, but I like shouting out classics. While I think that game had great presentation, that's probably the biggest downside to this title. Not having any variety in the board layouts, which could have opened up more creative arrangements, is an odd oversight. Why would the developers make up a story from whole cloth, but remain inflexible with all the mechanics? This odd choice hurts what might have been a better iteration over the physical medium, and could only be recommended for the die hard fans. I feel like the play style is a cozy mix of board game strategy and puzzle solving, where every tile I place actually matters. I’m not just matching colors and patterns, I’m also thinking ahead and trying to line up multiple goals at once. It’s turn based and really relaxing, but there’s always that layer of strategy as I balance patterns, go for buttons, and place tiles in ways that attract cats with different preferences. Each turn feels like a small decision puzzle because you can only work with limited patterns at a time, and once you place a tile, you’re opening up new options not just for yourself but for your opponents too. That makes every placement feel a bit more meaningful, since space on the quilt slowly fills up and you’re constantly planning around what might still be available later. I also love how cats just lie around on your quilt, it adds such a cute and cozy touch. Each cat has its own little “want”, like specific patterns it prefers, so you end up subtly designing your quilt around these hidden goals while still trying to maximize your points from color and pattern combinations. It turns into this gentle balancing act between efficiency and cuteness. Even though there is some luck involved with what tiles appear, the soothing music, soft visuals, and overall calm atmosphere keep it from ever feeling stressful. The matches are short and easy to jump into, but there’s still enough depth that it can keep you engaged over many hours, especially if you enjoy experimenting with different strategies or playing with friends online. It is a great game, I would recommend it if you enjoy cozy puzzle games with a bit of strategy and love cute cats!! 🐱🧵
Quilts and Cats of Calico is a relaxing and chill puzzle game with cute cats hanging out around the board you play on. There really isn't anything stressful about the game, and you can play at your own pace with story mode or just play against bots. The one gripe I have about the game is that the gameplay is a bit convoluted and sometimes relies on a little too much luck for an optimal score. Other than that, it is just a chill game that I'd recommend picking up if it goes on sale.

Quilts and Cats of Calico is a mobile app that's been dumped on Steam as if it was a real PC game (it's not)... it's a cash grab from greedy mobile devs. This mobile app is an iPhone/Android version of a boardgame, and a fine example of how doing nothing but adding cats to your game will generate more sales. As a game this is basically a slightly dumbed down version of Settlers of Catan meets quilting and with a cats theme. I think that's probably grossly oversimplifying it, the game works differently and is more about block placement and matching/not-matching patterns. And it should be noted that there's a little more to this than a very simple "minimum viable product", this is fleshed out with a story mode and other challenges, which is welcome, and more than you get from most mobile apps on Steam. Some elements of the game do feel like a stub missing features, however, like the whole thing is intended to be a 1v1 game but there's no facility for other players, you just play vs AI (but you can compare your score to other players). One of the big problems here is in terms of the general design and the way the boardgame was ported. There's two aspects of any game. The mechanics of the game, and the interface that the players have with that mechanic. Poker, for example, is about randomly generated hands that players get, and the interface is the randomly drawn paper cards. If you keep the random hand, but remove the physical cards, the game still works, but it's streamlined, more pure. That's video gaming. The best video games put the players directly against the core game mechanic. We don't love games because of their interfaces, we love them for their mechanics. The less that the interface gets in the way, the better. So here, we have a boardgame/cardgame conversion, and the focus of the developers has clearly been to keep, and emulate the annoying physical interface, without bothering to improve on the mechanics or put the players closer to them. As a result of this hamfisted decision, the game is clunky and annoying to play compared to games that were designed from scratch to be PC games. From a technical perspective, as a mobile app, this doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. The game features simple, cartoony 2D graphics, of the type you normally expect to see in low effort mobile apps. 3D graphics programming does require a degree of skill and competence and unfortunately not all developers have the budget or talent to deliver this, despite 3D graphics cards hitting the mainstream in the 1990's. Considering this is being evaluated as a PC game, having the graphics phoned in like this isn't going to result in a high quality, visually impressive game that PC gamers are used to seeing. The controls can't be customised because the game has such a dumbed down, simplified interface that it's just iPhone screen tapping stuff. The fact that the interface is this dumbed down might be seen as a problem in itself, however... this is a fairly shallow experience if you're the kind of gamer that likes to play games with deep, rich control schemes and interaction. You'll get none of that here. Because this is a mobile app, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the iPhones that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate handicaps and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was an afterthought for the iPhone developers who are to blame for this. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for mobile phones forces upon a game. Once more, mobile devs have made gaming worse for everyone. I didn't spend thousands on building a gaming rig just so I could pretend it's an iPhone. Those technical flaws drag this mobile app well below the minimum quality standards expected of a modern PC game. Let's look at the price and what kind of value this actually offers gamers. Should you buy this mobile app? Is it one of the best of the 140,000+ games on Steam? Yet again, a mobile developer trying to gouge PC gamers. The asking price on Steam is $20 USD, but on the app stores? Just $10. That is more than TWICE the price on the app stores. Mobile devs who pull this stunt clearly have no respect for PC gamers. Charging a premium on Steam for a mobile app that costs a fraction of that price on its native platform is not a legitimate business model - it's an attempt to exploit people who don't know better. This is a mobile app being sold at a deliberately inflated price to try to scam PC gamers into paying more money than mobile gamers do for the exact same iPhone game. Even if you do want to play this mobile app, you shouldn't buy it on Steam, you can get it for half the price on the app stores. The insane $20 asking price for this mobile app could get you games like "Age of Empires IV", "Yakuza 0" or "The Outer Wilds". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this. The quality problems and defects with this mobile app makes the asking price totally unrealistic. It's impossible to recommend this to gamers here on Steam. So yes... They want you to pay $20 USD on Steam for a $10 mobile app!!! Just who do they think we are?
很有趣的桌游 但是猫咪建模太丑
No wonder only 6% of people finished story mode, very bad
