Kingdom Under Fire: Heroes is the third game in the KUF series and the one I didn’t play at first because Blockbuster never had it. You play as a bunch of people, with most of them needing to be unlocked by playing the easier characters first. Set five years before the events of Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders, Heroes follows the stories of side characters that you met in the game prior. The humans like Ellen, Rupert, Walter, and then everyone else that doesn’t matter because they’re either from ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Vellond or ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Hexter. Gross. This is a straight up port of the original Xbox game, down to it still using the terminology like “Xbox dashboard” and things such as that. It recommends you play with a controller, but a friend of mine beat these using mouse and keyboard so it’s perfectly doable. A third person strategy game with the twist being that you control your dude when the melee fighting starts, the KUF games always had a bit of flare to them, taking into account of things like if your archers are on a hill, have the sun in their eyes, are shooting into trees, etc. You can set up paths for your calvary so they can just keep turning around and charging back through enemy ranks or through melees. There’s no real friendly fire outside of maybe lighting your guys on fire or stunning them with artillery, so just go nuts. The third person gameplay is what you get when your hero unit gets into melee. Each hero has a unique move set and special ability. With some of them being really boring or unwieldy to play, or just bashing the stupid Orc’s stupid face in with your big mace with Walter or Rupert. It janky, but its a fun kind of janky, like playing a mass combat version of your favorite 5/10 European RPG. Outside of the single player campaigns, there isn’t really much else to do. Heroes, luckily, actually lets you grind a bit instead of throwing you into the deep end like Crusaders did. But the really good multiplayer that came with the original releases is removed, I’m guessing they either didn’t know how to implement it for the PC release or flat out just didn’t want to bother adding multiplayer to a game that wasn’t going to have a scene for it. To be fair, I bought the first game on Launch and only saw the same 20 or 30 or so people. This might also be the most racist game I've ever played as well, outside of [Exactly the game you're thinking about here]. I don't mean that in an "I'm offended" way, but these people ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ HATE one another. EVERYONE has a slur for EVERYONE. Humans are called Apes, Orcs are pigs, "Hecks" "Vells" "Darkies" I'm not kidding, they call Dark Elves "Darkies" in this one. One of the characters talks about how the High Elf KKK actually showed up at her house with white hood on and burned it down. Both the regular Elves and Dark Elves call themselves "High Elves" because they believe they're superior to one another. And they almost never use personal pronouns like "He" or "She" when talking about one another. It's always "It" or "That thing". They've dehumanized one another (hilarious since only two countries are actually human in this setting) that they don't even see each other as people and have no problems butchering one another en masse. Its actually kind of refreshing. Some games have the Elven ghetto, Kingdom Under Fire talks about ethnic clensing casually. Like its a dinner conversation. Its very much a “Console-game Expansion Pack” release. I don’t think any of the old voice actors game back. Rupert suddenly has an English accent and Gerald doesn’t sound like Gerald. Its so weird and off putting because the games are only 5 years apart, they shouldn’t sound so much younger. It also expects that you finished Crusaders 100% with even the “easy” campaign being something that goes for the throat, especially if you aren’t prepared for this kind of gameplay. Outside of a higher resolution, yeah this is just the Xbox release. You can see the seams in the floor where the devs attached ground textures, character portraits are low quality and you can make out where the transparency layer starts and ends. When you save the game tells you not to turn off your Xbox, and for some reason it keeps telling me my other save files are damaged and to go to my “Xbox Dashboard” to delete them. You can get keyboard prompts, but that’s basically the only new addition. If the glitch existed in the original Xbox release, its here also. KUF has always been a niche game out here, I don’t know how popular it was in Korea, but it managed to get an Xbox 360 game as well as a failed MMO that was shut down a few years ago. If the MMO was just more of this but with mass PVP and less cash shop garbage, it might have done better. Its a shame because I really like the KUF universe, its a neat fantasy world with a hilariously grounded artstyle, despite the Dark Elves I would let kiss me on the mouth, 95% of the human armies look like something you would find in a medieval RTS or a dark fantasy RPG. You could probably plop down Ecclesia somewhere in the Warhammer Old World and they would fit right in. So its kind of a shame that KUF was just kind of left by the wayside of the years. After re-branding Kingdom Under Fire II into an MMO I refunded, its a fairly abused series. Re-releasing the original Kingdom Under Fire: A War of Heroes with a cryptominer attached to it, and the vaporware next game in the series “KUF:Rise” or “Risen” or whatever its called being a blockchain game that’s probably never seeing the light of day. Its basically a series some monkey in a suit is holding on to to wring money out of the corpse. Kingdom Under Fire: Heroes, and Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders are a good time. This one is kind of a ball buster, with difficulty going from “Its easy but the mission is long” to “Please stop abusing my nipples” I would recommend playing Crusaders first before this one. But other than that, I wouldn’t bother with KUF as a whole. It has its fans, all 12 of us, but its not something I would obsess over. These are certainly just cash grabs, but Crusaders and Heroes are probably the only things you’ll get out of this series that won’t try to use your computer as a money farm. Play these two and move on. Kingdom Under Fire: Heroes gets 6 mispronunciations of names out of 10. The first widely recognized South Korean video game was Goindol from 1987. This has to be one of the laziest ports I have ever seen...
Man, we need a really good modern sequel or something. Blueside has pretty much abandoned this franchise. If you like Total War, and Dynasty Warriors, this game is basically a combination of those two types of games. As a port, well... It's like taping dangling parts of your car with duct tape. Does it work? Yeah, but does it look good? No. Every time I save, the game makes sure to tell me that 50 out of the 60 save slots are corrupted. It makes me manually close each window before allowing me to save or load a game. It does this for every empty save slot. There's other problems as well. The game functions, but it can be a temperamental experience -Units sometimes struggle with pathfinding refusing to move -Units ignoring commands (Though I am not sure if that's intentional or not) -Objectives failing to complete, resulting in having to redo an entire battle
i figured out to fix the corrupted save issue, you need to fill all 50 slots with a save. when you get to the spot where you go to save and the game won't let you do anything (can't go back etc;) just keep spamming A until you have filled all 50 spots with a corrupted save, once there are no empty spots left the error message will stop showing up, and then you can save over the corrupted saves with your actual save. if you don't fill up all the slots the issue will happen next time except it will be you have 49 corrupted save files instead of 50
Blend of total war and dynasty warriors. Love it!!
Who ever said this was a good port was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ lying this game is busted as ♥♥♥♥ do not buy this you will be throwing your money into a furnace. I am so sick.of half ass ports and me having 5o take it up the ass when I try to get refunded.
good game DON't buy thou as the PC port breaks and ruin's most controls. almost inposible to move half the time
Only reason I am giving this a thumbs down is the pathfinding. It is atrocious to the point of making certain missions difficult because of it. Example would be have ally unit follow you and keep ally alive. Unfortunately Ally will run around in circles getting hit by arrows instead of following you if they even decide to move. Nothing you can do skill wise in certain situations to mitigate this. Sometimes your unit will also go in the opposite direction or to the side before going where you want and it is not a brief pathfinding issue, they will keep moving until you halt and move them again. Other than that I really enjoy this game and these missions are very, very few. But the frustration is real when it happens.
