Quick Description: -Kingdom Gun is a 2d action platformer roguelight heavily inspired by Risk of Rain. It has a gorgeous, bright, visual art style and doesn't take itself too seriously. If you are looking for a game w/ ridiculously over the top OP builds and synergies for days, than this is the game for you. Unfortunately, this game needs a lot of balancing, has quite a few bugs, and becomes very repetitive really quickly. This is a game I was really looking forward to, but one I can't recommend right now. What's Good: -The #1 thing that Kingdom Gun has going for it, is how fun it is to put together an insanely overpowered run where you decimate everything in your path. Within 2 hrs of playing, I became such an impenetrable juggernaut, that I couldn't die even when I tried to. I had lapped the game 3 times and wanted to quit, but even when I stood still in front of a bunch of enemies, I still couldn't die. It's really fun to get over a hundred upgrades from the slot machine and being crazy overpowered. -There are a lot of really unique guns. This is another selling point for this game. Some guns are extremely unique and are can blast enemies to pieces. It's a lot of fun experimenting w/ each gun and seeing which one is the best fit for you. -I think Kingdom Gun looks excellent visually! I was really impressed w/ how animations looked, the visual landscape of each biome, and the visual variety of the enemies. This game looks great imo. Could Use Some Changes: -This game is in need of some immediate balancing. Kingdom Gun's greatest strength is arguably also it's biggest problem. When you become invincible every other run, it takes away all sense of skill, and becomes dull rather quickly. Runs are way too RNG dependent and could use quit a bit of tweaking. -I think that the upgrade system could use some work. Most of the upgrades are pretty simplistic, and I think this was done intentionally, b/c you are going to get a ton of upgrades on a good run. The problem is, that I end up spending more time at the slot machine than I do taking on enemies b/c of how much money I have to spend on upgrades. It starts to become a chore and the excitement of new upgrades disintegrates. I think it would be more fun if the upgrades were slightly more interesting/stronger, but you got significantly less money. You can still get a really cool, overpowered build, but each upgrade feels more meaningful and you spend less time at the slot machine. The game tends to have more bugs/problems, the more upgrades you pick up, so this would help w/ that issue as well. -This game is quite rough around the edges. I ran into about a dozen small bugs and 1-2 major bugs in my 4-5 hrs playing. There is no tutorial, almost no information is given, and it's hard to even know exactly how to unlock things or how meta progression works. These are all things that can be easily ironed out over the next few months. Consensus: -Bottom Shelf Game (Tier 5 and makes up 10% of my reviews). I was really disappointed w/ my experience w/ Kingdom Gun. I know that there is a really fun game somewhere here, it's just not ready. I think that if the dev made a few core changes, cleaned up some of the bugs, and added a few quality of life options, this could be a really fun, wacky, and over the top action roguelight inspired by Risk of Rain. Unfortunately, I can't recommend this game at this moment in time.
The game has promise, but lacks a sense of balance & is quite janky as of right now. The devs seem receptive in the Discord and are working on fixing some of the problems. I would hold off for now but keep an eye on updates because the game is fun, it has a good soundtrack, great art and lots of fun guns to use but there's some lack of oversight in the gameplay & a lot of bugs which can ruin the experience (crashes, multiplayer is barely functional etc.)
4 of the 5 NPCs in the starting area do nothing but spout dialogue, one is a gamble that unlocks items to show up during your run. The game gives you no hint as to how to unlock any of these "6 playable characters", but after killing the first boss twice, and the second boss once (and finding 2 secrets) I didn't find a single one. As others have stated the difficulty ramps up insanely after not even that long, you'll be getting 3/4 shot by basic enemies if you stick around for even a bit too long. Seems like they've focused too hard on adding "haha meme item look like Nigel Thornberry" rather than focusing on actual solid gameplay & progression.
I wish there was a neutral option. The game look and feels good, but there are balancing issues imo. I'm just repeating a lot of what others say, enemies spawn too close, difficulty ramps up too fast, they do way too much damage. I'm a fan of alot of roguelites and cant remember one where I had trouble even getting to the first boss. Giving a recommend because all of these things are balance issues and not the gameplay. I'll still keep playing some, I want to see what else there is.
No no for me :(
Before buying this game (today), I read through the array of terrible reviews for the game that all summarized the same issues. For some strange reason I went against my gut and made the purchase because I was in need of a new Roguelike game to play. That was a terrible mistake - and I'm hoping you can avoid what I did. I've played Risk of Rain and many others like it (which supposedly this game is majorly influenced by). However, you're going to find yourself getting smoked constantly before you even know what's happening because the (infinite) enemy respawns are too fast and aggressive, even in the first stage. You get a gun that takes 6 or so shots to even take down a SINGLE mob (and by the time you kill that one, 2 more have spawned on top of you). In all honesty, I feel like the developers either made this game to troll people, or they've just turned the difficulty up to 20 because they enjoy giving refunds. This game is NOT a polished product, and should be an early release game until the major issues are fixed. I've never requested a refund for a game on Steam (yet), and this is the first time I'll be doing it (for just about 90 minutes of endless deaths). Buyers beware!
This game was released without proper testing. Bugs and constant crashing make it unplayable for many. I can't imagine the decision to release the game in this state was the developers saying "Good enough!". Maybe it was inexperience in their part. Maybe it was the result of arbitrary deadlines imposed by the powers that be overseeing the development team. Either way, I believe there is something lovely and worthwhile here. Whether the team behind it intends to continue supporting the game's development remains to be seen. I am rooting for them to bounce back from this shaky release. I believe Kingdom Gun is worth a follow. Stay tuned for updates. Until then, keep your monies.
While the launch was frustrating, I think the developers are taking the feedback to heart. Since launch they've implemented 2 major updates that have adressed community feedback and actually made the game a lot more fun, while still keeping the challenge. I hope some people come back to Kingdom Gun who refunded. I'm not hardcore by any means but they're moving in the right direction and I want to keep playing so that says something!
Ну такое.
