Fantastic story and writing. Unpolished, boring and tiresome gameplay.
For reference, I played via controller. This combat is legitimately bad on nearly aspect. I quit. I got to Bernard and while I was STARTING to understand how to fight, this Hans guy shows up, and ruined the entire thing. I legitimately didn't get a archery tutorial before this stupid moron wouldn't leave me alone. There was no explanation of how to even aim arrows or that I'm supposed to release arrows after drawing it back IMMEDIATELY or it becomes inaccurate. And I'm expected to compete with some random Nobleman? Then after I manage to beat him (because I googled how to properly do archery, a bad sign) this idiot makes me fight in the arena again, and I just got tired of it. I don't want to engage with this guy, I came to learn combat, not deal with some silver spoon moron. There was no way to just tell him no. No speech methods or any other skill outside of combat. I quit halfway through the fight after he kept jank damaging me (I'd block, then he'd do some weird jank and I'd take damage anyway at full stamina, and after I got multiple hits on him, his health bar hadn't moved, because they weren't multiple in a row? Meanwhile he got a single hit on me, and my bar goes down, even if I had stamina. Enemies appear to have unlimited stamina, which apparently also acts as armor for them, but not for me. Feinting legitimately stopped working outside of Bernard. Half the time, when they follow up on attacks, the green shield icon doesn't even appear to TRY to block it. When it does, and I could block, they block my attack anyway. What's the point of this? Dodging doesn't work on a controller. Give me a button or screw off. I legitimately don't care if it's realistic, a regular guy would NOT be winded after swinging a sword a few times like Henry does. Meanwhile the NPCs are NEVER winded. I cannot recommend this game. While I understand they were trying to be 'realistic', I legitimately feel like I got punished for GOING TO A TUTORIAL. I legitimately had a easier time in Souls games.
One of the most incredible RPGs I've played in a while, it hooked me immediately. I can't wait to see what the second game has in store when the first one is this good. I absolutely recommend playing it before the sequel.
